I know :( no Malta either :( . But the partner is paying for 85% of it, and he's more into France/Italy/Spain than Eire. Maybe next time. Even the UK is limited to London.

Oh well I am sure I will get over it.

Halfway through Europe tour and visited 3 famous microstates already. Have got pictures of Post offices and letterboxes of all and sent cards to myself from them. They are Monaco, which was closed when I was there. Vatican city with its money based post. It wss very expensive €2.50 to send a postcard back to New Zealand. San Marino only marginally cheaper.

It was 2 euro there but cards are free. Sadly the service in both was very poor. No amount of smiling would wake them up. Liechtenstein is next. I can't show any pictures til I get back as I am on tablet.

Europe is good, so far we are going to Venice tomorrow staying on the periphery as its very expensive. Done France, Spain, Italy and Greece, back in Italy, but Vienna on Sunday, Germany, Amsterdam and back to London. Lots of Aussies and Canadians on the trip, one very annoying fat American too who wanted a taxi to cross the road.

People friendly except in service industry, service is rude and indolent except Greece which is very poor with overgrown roads, half built buildings and people living in cars. Their government has failed them. I will write a more fulsome report when I get back, but so far.

Highlights: Athens and the Acropolis, Rome and Vatican.
Lowpoints: Being delayed on Greek ferry for 3 hours due to Italian cops searching for stowaways. These ferries are not cruise ones but full of smoking, Greek, Italian and Eastern European truckers. Food is stodgy and very expensive. Annoying party member called Suzanne from Florida.

Hey everyone,

Wasn't sure where to post. This seems okay. I'm just checking in to let you all know that I haven't abandoned stamp collecting. I just haven't really had any time to sit down and actually do anything. I have class every day, and I'm working 30 hours a week.

With homework and sitting and all that, I don't have much time. Hopefully it will get better. Just wanted to make sure you guys knew I didn't just "hit it and quit it". :D

Some people may have noticed some difference in my presence at the Stampboards. I have had some issues with the house where I live, and consequently have had much less time for the board, and most of that on smart phone, making it more trouble to post.

About two months ago we had a major power failure. It turned out that the cable feeding electricity to our house had broken. Consequently we lost all the electricity in the house. The power was restored fairly soon with limited capacity temporary extension cords and later with temporary cable. It took some one month to get the power cable replaced by a new permanent one.

About week ago we got first some 20 liters (5 gallons) water to our master bedroom floor and a few days later some 100-200 liters (25-50 gallons) water to the same master bedroom floor. After some seaerching and breaking walls and one wardrobe they found out the leak from the roof. Now we have emptied the master bedroom, a walk in wardrobe and 3 wardrobes in children's room. On Monday men will come to tear everything appart to allow everything dry properly and then (after 1-2 months) rebuild everything, hopefully in time for my Asian in-laws to come to visit us for one month.
I'll resume normal activity hopefully after their visit. Until that I'll bereading (at least ocassionally) but not posting much due to accessing the board mainly by phone.

These problems do not cause costs for us (insurace companies and the 'house company' pays practically everything) but they cause us lots of trouble.

Thanks Mick,

They will sort out, unfortunataly not very soon, though. I'm more worried how my wife takes it. The way I see it is that these are technical problems with technical solutions. She sees this as the house is falling appart.

My dad just got some very bad health news which we are all adjusting to and dealing with, so I will be around but unpredictably for the next while.

This is more a I am back after a long absence If I recall I was a founding member on the first day of stampboards and Queensland was my speciality. After a long time now doing other things I am ready to dive back into it. Still to decide exactly what to collect now but will start with obtaining some bulk lots just to play with for a while....So, heads up Greg, I may be after some stuff from you soon...Marius

Nobody's been away or planning to be away in over a year???

Well today I booked our vacation; late January/early February we will be going to Italy. I see that Princestamps visited San Marino last year; we have a car for a week (after a few days in Venice, Bologna, and Florence.)

I was hoping to visit the little Republic on a hill has anyone had any philatelic experiences there? Or perhaps any stamp functions/clubs/fairs in central Italy (outside and north of Rome)

It's been 14 years since I was in Italy last; it should be fun. But I'm open to suggestions--Perugia, Montepagano (near Roseto degli Abruzzi) and the surrounding hill country are planned......but with driving I like to keep my schedule flexible. No hotels booked while we drive; it's off-season and dirt cheap!

Just need to be back in Florence for our return flight Thursday Feb. 4th 2016.

So if I don't post for two weeks it's because I'm talking with my hands in bella Italia!

I'm posting a similar vain to Marius.
I didn't mean to be away from Stampboards for so long but work and life has just been so manic and busy this year.
Probably still wont have much time for stamps for a while but want to get back into being in touch with Stampboards, so even if I don't contribute much I will still be reading the boards.
Good to see so many of the familiar names still posting - and so many new ones as well.

I'm going to move at the end of the year from Kuopio to Tampere (both in Finland). I may be at times away from the board and when present may do that over mobile phone. All my dear stamps and catalogues have been packed, so I cannot access them for reference. I suppose by February the things start to get back to the normal. I'll get my mail rerouted to the new address, so, all mail should reach me also after move. If you are in any doubt, please contact me for the new address.

I didn't know this existed when I "went away", and as a Newbie surely no one would care. But I'm happy to be back!

After pissing off The Sheriff for not including a scan with my post on a "must include a scan" topic I gave myself a 48 hour ban from posting as punishment. Fortunately, that's only worth 36 Australian hours with the current exchange rate :) so...

Hi Kimmo the mover, :D
Glad it is you moving not me :) . Hope the move goes smoothly.
Have a couple of questions and don't mean to be too personal.
1. in Finland, what is a" house company"? mentioned in your posts regarding your water leak. and
2. hope you have had the new place/home checked for leaks :)
If you don't answer immediately will understand. moving is hell :)

cheers, hycgan the nosy newby

Hi hycgan,

In Finland most people do not live in separate houses. They either live in blocks of flats or in "row houses", which are a bit like horizontal blocks of flats (many houses build together sharing the wall between them, not build walls next to each other). In such arrangements there are shared responsibilities regarding both the building itself and the yard (like clearing snow). To take care of such responsibilities and often other things they are organized as companies. When one buys a flat, he doesn't actually buy that flat but corresponding shares of the company. The walls (structure) of the flat belong to the house company, not the flat owner. Same goes for pluming and so on.

The leak that was in our current home was impossible to check in advance. So, there is no way of telling if similar thing could happen in the new home, but they are rare. So, I don't feel that much afraid.

Originally, instead of a self-imposed ban, I was going to sentence myself to be transported to Botany Bay like the Pommies used to do way back. But The Sheriff wouldn't pay for the shipping charges.

Good luck fellow Newbie. Awfully long wait to start selling/trading so I guess in the meantime we can just content ourselves to lurk around in these Forums and practice our comedic writing skills on the locals.

Cheers, Dave

Maybe lurking isn't what you necessarily want to do..maybe put up some photos of the stamps you have and share some information around them. There are many nice themes in the forums where you can add some nice looking stamps from your collection small or big. From my little experience it's nice to make some contributions...small or big...frequently or periodically, based on time you have at hand.

Cheers
Collect worldwide but....
Focus on modern covers with MS or sets

Thanks for the advice anichat. Don't take too much heed of my word "lurk". I'm assuming it's a pejorative term in the online world.

I have already been active in starting/furthering discussions and (despite the transgression referred to) have also posted a number of scans, more to come once I get further into the pile of stamps at my disposal.

I look forward to viewing some of your posts in the near future as I'm sure you have contributed lots of interest. I'll keep my eyes peeled for your collecting interests and hopefully can include something of interest in my future posts.

Cheers, Dave.

Good news: All my things (almost) have been moved to Tampere.
Bad news: We will stay in Kuopio until new year. That means I am separated from almost everything I have until then. My children also broke my computer. So, I depend now on my phone for internet access.

To see something nice in the situation: We are spending this Christmas in a situation much closer to that of the first Christmas. Jesus was not at home for Christmas an had practically nothing. So, we are having Christmas in original style.
