Victor,

Though the images in the stamp resemble some players, they have been intentionally distorted so that the person cannot be identified. It is a policy of India Post that no "living person" can be depicted on postage stamps. That is the reason why QE does not feature on any modern post-independence stamps, even though we are a part of the Commonwealth.

But, it is a good guessing game to identify the players ...... :D

Some clues can be had from the teams participating in tournament.
Indian squad:
http://hockeyindia.org/odisha-hockey-mens-world-cup-bhubaneswar-2018

Other teams:
http://www.fih.ch/events/world-cup/world-cup-2018/hockey-wor ... or-action/

Wiki page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Men%27s_Hockey_World_Cup

Maybe some board members can link the players to the images.

As for the sheet singles, we are yet to receive them at our bureau. I will send you a set when available.
vicaf60 wrote:Does it mean that the stamps were issued in regular sheets, too? I failed to find pictures of pairs or sheets (their parts) of these in this format. Or, was the mini sheet the only format used for the issue? Then, why different print runs?
The stamps on the FDC have been cut out from the mini sheet - that was the only format they were available at the time of release. The mini sheet itself is HUGE - would need an A4 size envelope to fix it.

Haven't been posting anything new in this thread for quite a long time

So, here's a recent issue from Kyrgyzstan - a set of 3 stamps (issued perforated and imperforate, in regular sheets of 6 (3x2) stamps and in joint mini sheets of 3 stamps with different designs) to commemorate 2019 Asia Football Cup (date of issue - February 23)

All three stamps are based on photography and present episodes from matches playedby Kyrgyzstan team.
Kyrgyzstan - Philippines: Valery Kichin, No. 2, vs Stephan Markus Cabizares Schröck, No. 17
Image
South Korea - Kyrgyzstan: Lee Chung-yong, No. 17, (2008 Olympian) vs Valery Kichin, No. 2

PR China - Kyrgyzstan: Zhang Linpeng, No. 5, vs Mirlan Murzaev, No. 10

Time to move this thread a bit up in the list

Italy, 2007. The stamp commemorating Primo Carnera, Italy's first World Heavyweight Champion in professional boxing.
Image
The sportsman himself is not an Olympian, so my primary interest was the background photo (hope is the last to die  )

Luckily, I have found the original photo - it originates from the archives of the Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Daily News, Detroit Times or Sports Magazine, most photos from these archives have never been seen by the public before offered through an auction.
Image
Unfortunately (for me), the other boxer is not an Olympian, either :( It is Max Baer (Maximilian Adelbert Baer), an American World Heavyweight Champion.

Another puzzle solved :D

The Polish Post has recently issued a stamp to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the PKOl (Polish Olympic Committee).
The stamp presents the building of the Polish Sports and ourism Museum in Warsaw to the left and the finish of a female sprint competition to the right.
Image
The stamp design (its historic part) is based on a photography made in June 1963 during an athletics match between two Polish clubs, Legia and AZS Lotnik, at the Polish Army Stadium in Warsaw.
Image
It was not difficult to find out who is the athlete in the foreground - it's a famous Polish sprinter Irena Szewińska, an Olympic champion in Tokyo. Finding the other sprinter was more difficult. Though the photo is available in the network, the athlete has been named nowhere.

However, thanks to the kind assistance from the Museum, I have a possibility to state her name here - it's another Olympic champion from Tokyo, Ewa Janina Kłobukowska. :D

Now, just one little thing is left to do - to buy the stamp for my collection

Again help needed :) I hope there are basketball fans among the Stampboarders who know well NBA players.

In 1996 Zaire issued a set of stamps to commemorate 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics that was designed after photographs.

The basketball stamp features a photo of Michael Jordan, 2 times Olympic champion (in 1984 and 1992), in a game against Minnesota Timberwolves. Can anybody name the other basketball player?

Hi Victor,

First, I have to say that I am not a NBA expert (when it comes to identifying not well known players). That said, the Minnesota jersey (uniform) on the stamp was in use from 1989 to 1996. The only player that can fit this time frame and had the #8 (or similar) on a uniform is Andrew Lang. He was on the Timberwolves in 1996 and his uniform number was 28.

I hope that this helps you with your search. :D

Hi Victor,

This is not an easy question to answer if you do not know anything about gymnastics.

That said, it's not totally impossible.

My original thought was to say that it's Eberhard Gienger because he won a bronze medal at the 1976 Olympic games in Montreal, at the horizontal bar. His best apparatus in gymnastics was the horizontal bar and not the parallel bars (as seen in your image). Furthermore, his gymnastics career ended in 1981 (Your Maxi-card is from 1983). So, I stopped perusing that trail and focused on West German gymnasts in the early 1980s.

At the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, West Germany did not participate for obvious reasons.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, Gienger was not part of the West German gymnastics team. Which member specialized on parallel bars? Jürgen Geiger. He finished in 7th place at that event.

So, I had to go back to my original thought of Eberhard Gienger as the person depicted on the Maxi-card.

I hope that this will assist you in determining who is seen on the maxi-card.

I have still failed to find the original photo though Mark seems to be right. So I bump the thread to raise it from the cellar ;) - possibly, someone who is luckier will see it and help :D

Meanwhile, here's another philatelic issue, from a different place (Bulgaria's mini sheet issued in 2017 for the Brasilia-2017 International Stamp Exhibition), that we have successfully deciphered in the Russian phorum :D

Bulgaria_2017_BRASILIA-2017_MS_1.jpg

It would have been logical to suppose that the scene in the margin of the mini sheet represents an episode from a match between football squads of Bulgaria and Brasil. However, the idea turned out to be completely wrong

For some unknown reason, the Bulgarian designed chose to show the first international goal by the famous Pelé (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) scored in the match for the Roca Cup on the Maracanã stadium on July 7, 1957.

Болгария_2017_Pele first goal for Brazil 1957 against Argentina.jpg

The Argentinian defender on the left is Federico Vairo (Federico Vairo Moramarco Angellastre), and the goalkeeper is Amadeo Carrizo (Amadeo Raúl Carrizo). The Argentinians won - 2:1.

I believe it was supposed to show Betty Cuthbert but it doesn't deem to :(
At least, I cannot find this photograph.

The other three are Maria Sharapova, Russia, Roger Federer, Switzerland (on the left), and Amélie Simone Mauresmo, France, on the right.

Hi Victor,

I think that the male tennis player that is depicted at bottom right is the 2006 Australian Open runner-up, Marcos Baghdatis.

Thanks, bazza4338, however, it's not very convincing :(

The photo and the video you provided are from different events, and the photo is not for sure from the 100m final.

Concerning the photo - there is certain similarity, but I see number 508 (or alike, with 0 in the middle of the bib), and 518 in the photo.

Unfortunately, the Official Report published after the Games does not provide information on the bib numbers :(

The tennis players in the right sheet margin are (left to right): Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and ??

Can the other two be Fernando Verdasco who played in the semi final in 2009 against Nadal, and Justine Henin who was given a wildcard in 2010 on occasion of her comeback?

Community help required to recognize two out of four athletes in the set from Niue:

Number 1 & 4 are solved - Daley Thompson from the UK and Valery Lyukin from the USSR. The photograph of the latter (taken in Seoul in 1988) was flipped and edited (the Soviet coat of arms was removed):

The javelin thrower could be GB's Steve Beckley.

The weightlifter looks like Papua New Guinea's Steven Kari.

I will check Griffin.

The main issue with such designs is that the designers aften take a photograph that is in no way related to the event, in most cases photoes from previous times.

Consider the mini sheet to that set:

Фиджи_1998_XVI Игры Содружества_Бл_1_Albert Barry Miller_Anthony Conrad Nesty.JPG

It presents Albert Miller (future president of Fiji) as a discus thrower, and Anthony Nesty, Olympic champion in swimming. Neither competed in 1998 at all.

The Pom, thanks for your attention, I will check for Loudy Wiggins (Tourky), too, however, I doubt it's her in the stamp. I suppose the photo was taken somewhat earlier.

In general, the basic difficulty in decoding divers is to find the exact photography, otherwise they look similar to me (especially when no face is visible).

The recent issue from Artsach (Mountaneous Karabakh) commemorating the European championship in footbal - the designer used photographs of real footballers.

The right stamp presents Iker Casillas, a goalkeeper of the Spanish national team. A flipped photo was used for the design:

The player on the left stamp (as I was prompted) is Jesé Rodríguez Ruiz; however, I failed to find the original photograph, and I can't be absolutely sure of it.

This Vanuatu stamp issued in 1996 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of modern Olympic games presents, according to the world catalogues (and confirmed by photographic materials), the members of the Olympic team from Vanuatu at the summer Olympics in Atlanta: Mary Estelle Kapalu, Tawai Keiruan, Baptiste Firiam and Tavakalo Kailes.

It's obviuos that the same athletes are shown in another stamp from the same set, training fro the competitions:

However, I can't recognize the utmost female athlete :(

Well, Vanuatu's female Summer Olympians prior to and including 1996 were:

1996: Mary-Estelle Kapalu (which you have recognized on the stamp)

1992: Mary-Estelle Kapalu and Andrea Garae

1988: Olivette Bice (née Daruhi)

Vanuatu's first competed at the 1988 Summer Seoul Olympics. So, it can be either Andrea Garae or Olivette Bice that is depicted on the stamp.

A question to experiences football (soccer) fans here (I hope they are here, in the Stampboards ;) )

Please confirm (or reject) my identification of the players in these two stamps from Paraguay issued in 1985 to commemorate the 1986 FIFA World Cup (held in Mexico)

Not sure, but I would have guessed this is Hans Peter Müller (often called Hansi Müller), German national player between 1978 and 1983, who also had often number 10.

Thanks much, MaJu :D
It's obviously him, in the 1981/1982 season - the West Germans wore in most times this shirt with short sleeves.
Most probably, the photo was taken during the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Here's one from a friendly played in 1981 against Brazil:

Glad that I could help. And, by the way, I support your assumption that the Italian player is Altobelli.

Hi Victor,

I think that the Italian player, with the number #18 on his football shorts, is Alessandro Altobelli?

This time it's not a request for information, but an offer of information that might be useful for some thematic football philatelist.

The Italian Post commemorated their winning football squad at the 2020 EURO Cup with a stamp showing a silhouette of a goalkeeper. Let me deanonimize it :)

It is Gianluigi Donnarumma, the hero of the post-match penalties who procured a victory to the Italian squad with his saves.

Again seeking for confirmation and help ;)

Am I right to suppose that the German player in the left stamp is Thomas Häßler? And who is the Italian footballer?

Possibly Thomas Hässler yes. But could also be Oliver Bierhoff? The hairline looks the same compared to how he looked in the Euro 1996 period. :)

I agree with Mark about the Italian player. Even if he looks different, I would still say it's pretty much of Paolo Maldini in him.

Help needed again, with these two stamps from Bosnia and Herzegovina (Serbian postal administration). They are definitely made after photographs, especially the first one presenting a Germany-Italy pair of footballers.
However, I'm not much of a football fun and I can't recognize the players :(

Any help/hints will be appreciated.

Hi Victor,

I think that on the first stamp it's actually a French player in blue, white and red colours, the French national team colours.

On the second stamp, the player with the white and red striped jersey might be from Paraguay???

The images of players on these stamps might have been taken before the actual 2002 World Cup in Korea.

Any chance that you can provide better quality images?

Thanks for your opinion, Mark :)

Perhaps, these are a bit better (at least, bigger).

I believe thу second stamp is a combination of 2 photographs, though.

Hi Victor,

Here is my first guess as to one of the players depicted on your first stamp.

I think it's Germany's Carsten Ramelow depicted in a challenge for the ball against a French player???
