Error? War Stamp overprint on Jamaica KGV not Scott listed

Post by brautisetter »

I have a pair of Jamaica Scott # MR5's with what appears to be an error on the "War Stamp" overprint on the left stamp. I do not see a listing in Scott for it. Is it known in any other reference material?

Reason: "AddSpace" button used before images, as all members should click for every image. And added image correctly inline as well.

SG lists a number of errors on this issue but not this one.

However, it also has the following note:

Minor varieties, such as raised quads, small stop, double stop, spaced letters and letters of different sizes, also exist in this overprint. The setting was altered several times.

This looks like a "raised quad" error to me.

Scott is famously useless for British Commonwealth.

If you collect it you really need to buy a SG Catalogue of some era. :!:

Yes it is, although it's not an error, just a variety.

The locally produced War Stamp issues (SG 68/69, 70/72, 73/75) are replete with similar small varieties - a full listing will be found in "War Tax Stamps of the British Empire First World War - The West Indies" by John Davis.

Previous posts have covered this well, but here is the variety in a positional piece on the ½d:

A similar variety on a completely different stamp - next to the 2 on the right-hand stamp.

Here are more examples, this time from Crete.

In 1906 Crete had a shortage of revenue stamps and various stamps were overprinted with the word XARTOSEMON.

In 1908, when there was a self-declared union with Greece, these were locally overprinted BASILEION HELLENIKON with many typesetting errors.

Here are three overprinted postage dues with various errors:
