Help with ID of these Australia private company perfin stamps?

Post by mobbor »

.
I would appreciate any assistance with these private perfins on Aust. KG V.

They're tricky: some I couldn't decipher at all & some could be reversed or
even inverted. (1), (2) & (3) will identify which line where appropriate:

Large A; A + R; Bb, BS, CSR, DU Ld; (1) DWM (2) Ltd; (1) EB (2) Ltd,

F & G; (1) GW (2) S (3) & Co; (1) GR (2) W; HB; HN; HS; HW or MH;

(1) J& (2) BS; JCH; Large K; KL; LH; (1) LL (2) G; (1) L (2) S; MBW; MCC;

MR; M(?)SH; NZI; (1) NZ (2) IC; O.K. (1) P.L. (2) &B; (1) P (2) &O; POC

(1) RR (2) &Co; SG; (1) SH (2) & (3) Co Ltd; (1) S (2) M (3) C (diagonal);

(1) VO (2) Co; (1) W.H. (2) B; (1) WS (2) &Co; (1) W& (2) GD;

Large Y, (1) Z? (2)ED; (1) T.T. (2) E.A; Large 8?BS.

Thanks

mobbor,

I had a hazy recollection about private perfins somewhere on Stampboards so did a search and found this link:

See if this is any help.

The "Handbook of Australian Private Perfins" by John Mathews (retail approx $125.00) gives comprehensive details of the various types of Australian Commercial Perfins with rarity ratings.

First to put Clemo out of his misery I have 2 nice copies of 8/15 in red
but they're both state 1 in pair with 8/14.

Philatelics (Australia)
Thanks for that. However that was the sum total of my private perfins
which I have acquired accidentally. So the handbook, which I'm sure is great is worth about $5/ stamp.
I hasten to add that I have a large collection of KG V handbooks- from 1/2d to 1/4d. And I think it essential that serious collectors acquire them.
It's just that this was just a sideline that I don't expect to add to.

Hi, I stated above, that the "Handbook of Australian Private Perfins" by John Mathews retailed at approximately $125.00. I was in error, John has advised me he has stocks of the book available for AU$75.00. The book includes a wealth of information including rarity ratings, and is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in private perfins.

John Mathews email address, posted with his permission should anyone require a copy is John.Mathews(at)canberra.edu.au

Just after I submitted the post I remembered a much earlier post where I gave mobbor a website that showed a lot of the private perfins, so this time I downloaded it for future reference, and your input is most appreciated.

Hi Clemo
I don't know anything about Tooheys Ltd except that their product is still on the market & my favourite tipple.
I would hazard this: your stamp may well be unique, but it's not worth any more than a normal die 2 sub-cliche except for anyone looking for that
perfin. It's not the same thing as say the same cliche with an inverted watermark or a rare shade.
Hope I'm wrong.

M P was "Melbourne Post Office". This was used over a period of time, and also from 1922 to 1931 at Footscray Post Office. (Curiously, that's a Footscray cancellation.)

J S & S were "James Spicer & Sons", a large Melbourne based paper merchant and stationery supplier. Their store was in Lonsdale Street.

Oh dear :oops: :oops: Huge corrections needed here. In Grant & Mathews "Commercial Perfins of Australia", M P does not have a business listing after the entry. There are 3 different 'types' of this perfin used from 1913 through to the 1930s, all scarce to rare, and your example is the latest known.

The only notes against this variation are that it is known to have been used between 1931-34 (my second mistake) at Footscray. The second example - with a much wider 'M', is known with a Melbourne postmark in 1919.

All this places your example in the 'desirable' category, as it appears to be a previously unlisted recording.

There is at least one member on this board who knows far more about perfins than I do. Here's hoping he might see this and make some comments. :D

Muruk,

Thanks for the suggestion, and thank you to the moderator who combined my question with this existing thread. It also would have helped more had I spelled Australian correctly :oops: :oops:

Mcgooley,

Thanks for the information, it is much appreciated.

If I'm understanding your post correctly - it is not known who used the private perfin MP, however 3 different types are recorded. The type I have is recorded as being used at Footscray between 1931-34 and therefore my example potentially establishes that the type was in use (at Footscray) 11 years earlier than previously thought?

If anyone else can shed further light on the MP perfin I will be very interested :D

Cheers

After consulting my Grant & Mathews, there were several MP perfins; at least four;
MP. 1 with a rarity of R
.
MP. 2 with a rarity of S used - 1919 with a Melbourne post mark
Martin & Pleasance, Chemists, 180 Collins Street, Melbourne
,
MP. 3 with a rarity of R used 1931 - 1934 with a Footscray postmark
M Punshon & Co, Grocers, tea & wine merchants, 133 Nicholson St, Footscray
,
MP. 4 with a rarity of R ( but a vertical perfin) used 1896 -
.

Thanks Philanthropist,

Without having a copy of Grant & Mathews with which to refer, it appears from the information provided that the date fits with MP.2 and the Footscray postmark with a very very early usage of MP.3.

Do you concur with mcgooley that the size and shape of the lettering resembles that of MP.3 rather than MP.2?

Thanks

No, no way would I agree with McGooley,
on scone recipes, footy tipping, or anything much else.
It is MP.3, counting the perf and placement of them, definitely places it as MP. 3.
Before getting excited over the date, which watermark and die is the stamp itself?

:lol: :lol:

It's a single watermark Die 1 and can be identified as Unallocated Constant Variety C62 based on the notch in the right frame at the emu's tail. The earliest recorded examples of this variety are January 1920 which is contemporary with the date of the postmark.

"M Punshon & Co, Grocers, tea & wine merchants, 133 Nicholson St, Footscray" had been operating in Footiscray since at least the 1890s;

which opens up some possibilities regarding MP.4

Thanks Mcgooley,

Having a closer look, the hole on the kings nose may just be another torn hole and not a perf. It sits slightly higher than the blind perf holes either side. Terefore International Harvester is probably it.
