Thanks John,

That seems strange as 4 & 5 are between the other dates.

1-3 are 1d red S WMK. 1 is 1917, and judging by the shades, 2 & 3 are no later. 4 & 5 are 1d green CofA, so not before Oct. 1931.4-6 are 1d green, small mult. wmk, perf. 13½x12½- somewhere between 1926 and 1931.

Curious to know if below are perfins or just random pinholes.

Well done. :)

Have merged this question to this existing thread where it always should have been started.

The perfin Guru John Mathews is also an active member here to assist in such ID. :!:

Hi Rigs (and others),

The "quality" of the perfin is typical of most of the Victorian perfins. It was not a specific, well-engineered die - pins were set up in a grid of rows and columns of holes in a device which was used for many customer clients of this stamp vendor. The result is that letters which have curved parts (and V and W) have a rather odd appearance.

In this example, the rows and columns were in a "diamond" arrangement. There were also a couple of other grids used - "diamond" ones with different spacing between rows and columns, and some using a "square" arrangement of holes.

This pattern is known used over the period 1903-1910. The company also used letter combinations VBF, VBFC, VBFCCL and VBFCL, all of this same style, and altogether over 30 different patterns.

Hi mobbor,

Thanks for the date information. It is consistent with the examples being from a multiple-die device.

The Handbook of Australian Private Perfins only shows one perfin image for this device, as the differences between the dies are so small that most collectors would have difficulty in measuring them. The Handbook does note this multiple-die device in an Appendix of such multiple-die devices.

Thanks very much for your insight. Glancing at the stamp looked like random pinholes (to me, not knowing much about it), but it was not until I saw the large scan of the reverse on screen that it was more obviously a perfin.

Hi Rigs,

Also, sometimes indentations made by shorter pins ("blind holes") can only be seen in an enlarged image.

Perfin Gurus - can anyone take a stab at this poorly punched perfin on an 1914 6d Engraved Kookaburra?

Not sure what direction is correct, so loaded both versions!

Can't recall seeing a perfin on this stamp - it is tough enough to find FU with NO perfin!

Silly me - I totally forgot to look back 7 years.

International Harvester Company seems to be the possible suggestion, now I have needed to travel back there?

Are private perfins common on 1914 6d Engraved Kookas, was my other question?

Well done, The Pom! Must be a Star Wars fan?

The pattern is IHC.5, rated Uncommon, International Harvester Company, Melbourne. Pattern based on the company logo.

There are 43 perfin patterns (including IHC.5) known (so far) on the 1914 6d Engraved Kooka.

Far fewer known on the 1d Engraved KGV, possibly because it would have been less of a target to would-be thieves?

Hi mobbor,

Yes, this is HSLD.5, based on the position of the 'D' relative to the 'L', 7 pins in the 'D', and the slight shift to the right of the top pin of the 'L'.

1928-1938, rated Very Common.

Good luck with the 1d reds.. :)
