I've got a handful of imperf penny reds with blue cancels (of varying shades) acquired years ago when they were a lot cheaper then they are now.

Can someone please give me an idea as to the plate number of this 4-margin example? The cancel looks quite a bit bluer on the actual stamp than the scan. With both corner letters off-centre (one to the left one to the right) I imagine there aren't many candidates.

Hello fchd,
I think your 1d red 'L-C' is from plate 87.
Best wishes,
Bill

Looking for a sense check; i have been offered a page of 20 x 1d Red Imperforates.

No pictures to post (sorry) but:

all 20 are fine 4 margin undamaged with maltese cross postmarks. they have been arranged as individual plate numbers from 13-32 and annotated as such. I cannot check the plate numbers without buying the page and was wondering what a fair price to pay would be.

i was thinking £5 per stamp ?

Alan

Hello Everybody. This one on piece has a Numeral 1 Maltese Cross, circa 1843. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Cheers, Tod. :)

Would anyone of the experts be able to help with this one and tell me the 'give-aways' which help identify it? Thanks in advance.

You will need a larger scan without all that black border to help I suggest!

A scan with a resolution of at least 600dpi is typically the minimum required for most plating purposes.

Great -we're getting there aren't we? First.... which 'E'? And have you any idea what the worth is? Thanks for all your help so far -it is a big improvement on my own (weak) attempts.

'E' of Postage, the small break at top to frame line this is a characteristics variety from this range of plates, and also shows a basal shift at bottom.

The SG specialised catalogue describes these.

Got it! Such a pleasure to get guidance. Thanks so much. Any idea of value as my catalogue only shows 'used'. Very grateful.

Hello Mark,
Your 1d red 'L-G' is a difficult one, but the nearest I can get is plate 38.
Best wishes,
Bill

SG only price by plate number used, a general SG Cat. for an unused imperf red is stated as £600 (fine condition), but this will be far more than I would expect it to achieve in practice, 1/3rd Cat. might be more like it. The Stoneham Cat. price in my edition is £150 which is more like it.

Very grateful indeed! I also have a 'Stoneham' and find it much closer to the market than SG. Thanks very much.

That might be plate 167. The truncated base makes it difficult to be certain.
Best wishes,

I wonder if someone could confirm (or deny) plate 22 for this one please ? It is part of a sequence i bought recently claiming to be plates 12-31. The early ones look right with the progressive NE corner frame break but I am not sure what to look for here.

The entire page is attached just for peoples' interest but of course the scan is not near enough for anyone to check from that; but if anyone has any thoughts on any of the maltese crosses that would be nice :) 18 and possibly 28 look like they may be less standard?

Thanks.

With the 12-16 ones also being correct i am getting a good feeling that somebody knew what they were doing with this page. is it sad to be surprised by competence ? :)
