mobbor,

No apparent mystery.

Only one datestamp - the date-wheels are slightly rotated out of horizontal alignment.

'-' was followed by a '1'; '7' was followed by an '8' and 'SEP' follows 'AUG' etc. on the wheels.
Looking for NSW cut-down relief date stamps, as seen in my avatar, to add to my collection.

Earlier posts in this thread, such as one by mcgooley on [Sun Jan 12, 2020 08:40:21 am]
referred to Spring Vale, Vic.

I suppose/guess this is the same location as Springvale, now officially regarded as
a southeastern suburb of Melbourne, thanks to the "filling in" of urban development.

It has a very large cemetery and crematorium, now called Springvale Botanical Cemetery,
originally The Necropolis. It had its own branch railway line and station up until 1952.
Among the famous people buried there are Governor General Sir Zelman Cowan and
Prime Minister John McEwan, as well as sporting figures such as cricketer Bill Woodfall
and jockey Scobie Breasley.

Pr Box Room I think is Private Box Room, from page E-18 of hard copy of Watson, Webster & Wood (WWW) Volume Two.

No example is shown on the page but I can scan in a copy tomorrow.

I am not sure on the other one. It could be G D Branch (General Delivery Branch) from page E-17 of the same publication.

Can you make a larger & higher resolution scan of that one?

Hello,

can anyone perhaps help me with this postmark? It is a Western Australia postmark dated 1937 which looks a bit like the NSW relief cut-down postmarks with an M only in the upper part of the postmark. Are such cut-down cancels also known for Western Australia? Any help would be great!

Hi Josto, just swinging on my trapeze so I can see the postmark the right way up and I don't think it's a cut - down at all.. Not that I know if WA had them or not..

Just look at the arc and draw the continuation of the circle and I think you'll find that the "M" in question is below the name of the town, of which was entirely left behind on the envelope when the stamp was soaked off..

The M is in the position of "Time Markings" in my opinion..

You didn't comment about the fact it seemed unlikely that a 1d red would be dated as late as 1931. Anyway I just came across another one-

This one A, with a 1916 date. Not sure what the word before WEST is- not NORTH.

It's strange: I'm currently checking a foolscap envelope with many '000's of 1d reds. The postmarks generally are very common, with up to 30% being Sydney. But every now and then, I come across stuff like this, I've never seen before.

A bit unusual to have the street name in the Post Office name these days. Likely there was a larger Glenelg North nearby. Here is a map, it looks very suburban these days:

Brad,
The Claremont Showground postmark is listed in "Australian Pictormarks".
It was created for the Royal Perth Show & was withdrawn 20 Sep 1980.

A total of 1,705 cancels, CV $40 in Pictormarks.

Other cancels were created for shows in subsequent years.

Despite not being particularly pictorial, it was for a special event at and at a temporary PO, so presumably it qualifies for inclusion on those grounds.

PPA says Chief Parcels Office was Post Office in it's own right from 1/11/33 to 30/09/1965.

Chief Parcels Office - Renamed from Central Square PO 1/11/1933; renamed Railway Square PO 1/10/1965.

PPA does not record Old Noarlunga at all which still exists on the Australia Post website as a CMA open from 4pm.

Below is what PPA has recorded:

Noarlunga - PO 21/10/1841.
Noarlunga Centre
Port Noarlunga - RO c.-/11/1909; PO c.-/11/1910.

Is anyone able to fill in the gaps?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you Bunge. I think I might have to source a copy of that book. :)

Found this beautifully centred, second wmk, small OS 2/- Roo on a club circuit sheet last weekend.

However the postmark, dated 27 MR 31(?), piqued my curiostity and cost me $3 to ask the question ... top inner circle is "SPECIAL" - any suggestions as to the rest of the postmark, please?

Cheers, Gordon
