Thanks Ubobo,

Is the first date the earliest known use? If so will need to be updated as the date on this one is about 4 years earlier is it not? Regards, Summo.

MA and JU datestamps.

When I asked numerous people for their opinions, nearly everyone agreed with June for JU, but there was no consensus re MA. Now I've checked my own stamps. Here's what I found:-

(I made 2 tables, but on preview they become one, so I'll have to do a summary.)

Between 1915 and 1919, there were a total of 7 MA's and 57 JU's. If MA was March there would be no SUNDAYS, if it was MAY there would be 1. If JU was JUNE there no SUNDAYS, but if it was JULY, there would be 6.

Given the scarcity of Sundays, I'm going with March and June. (?)

mobbor,

'JE' & 'JU' represent 'June' and 'JL' & 'JY' represent 'July'. Why someone would be confused by the pairing is quite remarkable.

Assuming 'JU' is 'July' how does one pair up two of the 3 remaining ones and pair up the solitary one with 'July'? Neither 'JL' nor 'JY' could represent 'June' ergo 'JU' cannot be 'July' full stop!!!!!!!

It defies common sense and rationality.
Looking for NSW cut-down relief date stamps, as seen in my avatar, to add to my collection.

Well, I can't see the difference. June is also represented by JN and JE. But, now, I do agree that JU is June.

Hello !

Here is a confusing cancel, especially the two last letters over the Roo. Even if it is partial, the letter over the Roo's paws does not seem to be in line with others.

Please your opinions, if possible.

Because it's upside down, you can't make any sense of it.. It's a partial 1930 cancel from Tasmania

Thank you, Bunge !

So, if I understood you correctly, one letter (A) of Tasmania happens to be upside down.
How often does it occur?

The postmark is upside down, turn the stamp 180° and then look at the postmark !!!!!

Here I'll do it for you, Postmarks aren't always readable with the stamp in an upright position, learn to rotate the stamp until the writing is legible..

Even upside down that very letter looks wrong, unless it's a 'V' beginning a place name (but there is a kind of middle bar in it).

Mate, I'm pulling my hair out here, it's as plain as the nose on your face, partial Tasmania (ANIA) on the bottom and the town's name ends in "A" over the top..Probably "NA"

The date is May or July 30th and the year date I don't know..

Town name is probably seven or eight letters long. My guess is Taranna.
And as the stamp is a halfpenny green the year is probably 1919.

Bairnsdale Unframed Duplex WWW 50A
This is a pretty common datestamp over the period in use but I have just not had enough material to check my question.
It would appear that this datestamp was in use for the whole of 1894 without a "9" decade wheel.
I am trying to determine when this might have commenced and ended.
I have a example SE 1893 with a decade wheel and one FE 1895 with a decade wheel. All the examples I have seen for 1894 have only the year wheel "4"
My earliest 84 example is JA27 4 and latest DC 30 4.
I would be interested to hear if anyone can assist in earlier use or later use and examples of monthly usage throughout 84 to prove that this was the way it was throughout 1894.
I would be interested in any spares of various month to buy or exchange postmark material.

Interesting, the 4 seems to be perfectly centered not offset as one would expect. I've noticed quite a few date anomalies on early Australian stamps.

I have seen those examples on Ebay and I have both of those months.

I tend to agree with your thinking regarding centering of the 4.
In comparison with dates including a 9 decade impression, the left side of the 9 seems to align with the left side of the cross piece of the "T" in VICTORIA. See examples.
If a 9 was placed in front of the 4 it would be further left.

Sometimes a layer of muslin cloth was placed between the cancelling implement and the stamps on a fragile parcel. It caused the affect ghat shows on your piece,

eharper,
The effect on the postmark is likely due to the raised textured surface of the packaging material to which the stamp is attached.
Note that the ink marks align with the packaging material surface texture and that the effect cannot be seen on the stamp.

I know nothing about postmarks, but it's a shame about the condition. Your stamp is 8/14 'thin one penny'. Catalogued by BW as 71(4)l- priced at $30.

PPA says:

Lower Sandy Bay PO 11/5/1885; renamed Sandy Bay Lower PO 30/6/1895.

Sandy Bay Lower Renamed from Lower Sandy Bay PO 1/7/1895; renamed Beachside PO 3/4/1921.

However, I've seen a couple of examples in the "Sandy Bay Lower" period with "Lower Sandy Bay" cancels. Did they change the name of the PO, but not change the postmarker?

The postmark was created to use at the temporary facilities at nearby Duntroon in 1911-1912.
Then later general use at Queanbeyan post office from 1926-1936.
