Did France ever use watermarks on their stamps?

Post by apride »

.
Can anyone help out with a question.

Does France use watermarks on its stamps?

The Scott catalogue lists no pics or even any information on watermarks for French stamps.

The only one I have seen in my collection so far is like a checked pattern.

Photos would be helpful if available.

Thanks in advance for any advise/help. Al.

Al,

No, France has never used watermarks in its stamp production.

The checkered marks you refer to do exist and are visible from the front on some of the Sage type stamps issued between the 1870's and 1900. The picture below shows this very well due as the discoloration damage, especially of the first stamp on the left, brings out the checkered pattern more clearly.

Is this what you were referring to?

So far as I can find is that they did not use watermarks.

Now a magazine called The Stamp-Collector's Magazine, March 1, 1866, page 33, states;

France. - The paper of the French stamps is simply tinted with the colour of the stamp, and has never had any watermark. Those of the colonies are fabricated on the same plan. Some essays containing a thread are found in collections.

Now this was written in 1866 now, BUT it is all I could find on the matter of watermarks on French stamps.

Some stamps of France have watermark ... but by error.

I could tell you the 5c Ceres of France has a "LACROIX" watermark on some stamps and is very hard to find

But most of the stamps have no watermark at all

Yes, like checkerboard lines. Only the stamps seem to have it made into the back of the paper, like a watermark, but obviously not a watermark. Thank you all very much for the information. Couldn't seem to find the info on my own and I found it very strange that a country would not have any watermarks as I had not run into that previously. Again, Stampboard comes through with a wealth of knowledge from its members. Love this place. lol.

These stamps appear to be printed on quadrille paper: that is, paper watermarked with vertical & horizontal lines that make squares. Stamp catalogs also say these stamps are printed on quadrille paper. However, they are not.

The quadrille pattern was apparently printed on the paper with a resin or varnish. On the picture above (also the first picture in this thread) you can see how the cancellation ink and perhaps even the blue ink of the stamp design does not stick to the quadrille lines very well -- which indicates these lines are not watermarks. This characteristic is also found on stamps of Austria with diagonal "varnish" lines printed on them.

For more on this, see Fundamentals of Philately by L N Williams, p. 52.

My Maury catalogue says (when translated into English) that the quadrille lines are 'intended to counteract fraud'.
I don't know whether that means against forgery or reusing a used stamp.

These lines react to UV, which is a clear indication that they are not watermarks (should some one doubt it or need an easy way to identify them).

rtvstamps,

Since the well-publicised introduction of the new version of the board last year, all images should be uploaded directly to Stampboards which is a very simple process. Images must not be linked to from any external image hosting site(s) or other websites as these then need to be manually converted by the volunteer moderator team.

Here, is a link to a tutorial showing how images should be added.

Test and post your images direct onto June 2020 NEW Stampboards

Thank you.

Hi Allanswood,

That quadrille pattern paper was release to minimise fraud as fake ones were discovered in Paris and Belfort.

Cheers
