Catalogue of the New Zealand Private Post Stamps

Post by stampingpaws »

Hello Everyone,

I have been requested by a couple of my customers to prepare a catalogue and a simplified album for the Private Post stamps that have been issued by New Zealand.

During my initial investigations I have not come across a catalogue or an album. However, I have found a few incomplete listings on the web.

So I am requesting any information on the topic.

In particular,

1 - Names and addresses of operators.
2 - Date range that services were offered and what sort of service.
3 - If they produced stamps
4 - Any sort of listing of these stamps
5 - How stamps were delivered
6 - Pictures of any stamps and envelopes

and

anything you think that might be useful.

Many thanks

Robert Fulton

Good morning Robert

Whilst I was in Christchurch working for Stirling & Co Ltd. we did produce an alternative postal service providers stamp catalogue under the Tasman brand in 2004. This is long since out of print and as the company ceased trading a short while later there has been no later catalogue available.

I do not envy your task as I have been involved with updating New Zealand's revenue catalogues in the past 5 years. I look forward to seeing your results in due course. David.

David Smitham you are not entirely correct that "there has been no later catalogue".

John Hill has produced "Alternative Post Operators in New Zealand", part 1 and part 2.

John does not cove all the operators, but has provided miniscule detail on :

Fastway Post
National Mail
KiwiMail
DX Mail
Pete's Post.

There are no pricings of the stamps.

A non-stamp collector, David S Sanders, is producing Album Pages, complete with the issue date & black & white illustration of each stamp (still a work-in progress).

David may be reached at Opotiki Museum where he is a volunteer worker.

Email address: ohas<at>xtra.co.nz.

Image

Here is an early production page.

The research is ongoing, but David has devoted his energy to leaving a permanent record of Alternative Post issues before records are lost.

All proceeds from the sale of his pages goes to Opotiki Museum.

These illustrate the volumes produced by John Hill.

Reflecting David Smitham's comments, John has declared he will not again devote his life to creating & publishing any further volume as he was forced to ignore his family while he researched his subject.

A copy of which is held in the Manawatu Philatelic Society Library - from the National Literature Exhibition Entry 2005.

We must not overlook the fine work of Dave Joll, in Invercargill, who has compiled a very comprehensive catalogue online of all the alternative stamps of NZ Mail Ltd and Postie's Choice.

Dave's website is remarkable, as with the NZ Mail Ltd issues, every few months they do a reprint of the stamps, and make new printing plates, which have DIFFERENT tiny serial numbers and dates at the foot. Dave's listing features ALL these variants, which is incredible.

The website is:

How far back are you going? The Great Barrier Island Pigeon Posts of 19th Century? 1915 General Grant Expedition set 1915 from Auckland Islands? The 1960s Timaru Cycle Mail that did in fact carry mail?

Any listing needs to be researched well and be accurate. And then you will sell maybe 20 copies. 8-)

during lockdown started sorting my dxmail then branched out into my fastway collection, hit a bit of a road block with the dxmail as I mainly have oddments left over that I can't organise into sets, was wondering if there are any other collectors out there that can supply any pics of stamps I don't have to help complete sets in my file, fastway post also seem to have 2 varieties of perfs but do not have enough to know if all issues have them?

You are very lucky to have the $1.50 values, something few NZ collectors have! I have lots of 40c values I can offer you however. PM me for details.

Hi Panterra, you will have to excuse me I'm computer illiterate, can handle the basics not much else, pics of your 40c would be welcome as I don't have a lot of the older issues, not sure how to PM except through the forum.

Anyway today's pics, never seen the light green pukeko found it in David Sanders catalogue, thought it was a Faulty scan until I found how to save the image then had a proper look at it, if you have any of the older NZM I have a few gaps still need filling.

Was thinking of trying a zip file could load a lot more files without taking up space but never tried it yet.

these are the latest cal's i have received just last week, not aware if nzpost is discontinuing them or not, as far as stamp collectors are concerned i don't think nzpost even considers them unless they are mint collectors, organising a catalogue would be a big job with all the reprints some companies put out and some of the petes post would be difficult with the different surfaces-flat-semi goss and gloss.

NZ Post stopped the CALs mid 2019. They were replaced by Personalised Labels (Subtle difference).

NZ Post used to issue annual CAL packs which allowed collectors to keep up to date with each year's issues but they have stopped that now making it very difficult to keep up to date.

Two members of the New Zealand Society of Great Britain (Tony Ward and Jo Blyth) have produced a catalogue of all known Personalised Labels issued between July 2019 and December 2019.

A copy of this can be viewed or downloaded from the 'Research Archive' of the New Zealand Society's website. Link here:

Pinky, anyone who ALWAYS lazily types entirely in ugly lower case, who claims they cannot figure something one does not inspire confidence, to me anyway. :!: :!:

Maybe you can sell a few CALS and buy a SHIFT button?

I'm not trying to inspire confidence,If i read computer's for dummies it would be over my head and anything i learnt would be forgotten the next day,my niece can find anything on the internet in seconds,i can spend hours and still not find what I'm looking for.

Even when i have info it does not register like the previous post, had those files for years and did not notice they are different sets till i loaded them yesterday, i'm a one finger typer i try to check my spelling but go blank with some words, anyway if you can't read lower case it's not my problem.

I'm only here to show stamps and any information about sets i have learnt about.

I am a 2 finger typist too, and oddly, despite my 100,000 posts here, I have managed to find the Shift key for all of them to start sentences with capital letters and that boring, as have the other 21,500 members. It has nothing to do with spelling ability, but all to do with pride in your work, and how you come across to others. :!:

It really is just polite to use capital letters for short posts. Some folks clearly do not care, and sad as that is, it still occurs now and again, despite our clear Rule 17 -

17. Please Present Your Posts Thoughtfully and NEATLY

"You are what you post". You can come across to others here as being either slap-dash and sloppy, and near illiterate - or neat and tidy and professional and intelligent - the choice is always yours.

Some wise members even take a little time to use the "PREVIEW" button to look over their posts, to see if the image has loaded correctly, to see their HEADING makes sense and uses normal punctuation, to see whether the "Quote" feature worked, and to check the colour and bold and highlights are coded correctly etc.

And they use PARAGRAPHS every couple of sentences. Vast globs of type with no paragraphs, and no capital letters, and no spell check, and lazy abbreviations, might be just fine for quick text messages to and from 12 year olds, but we hopefully will not see it on stampboards.com If we do, after being warned, we may not see you here very long - that's a promise.

"You are what you post". Remember that. And others judge you on that. Please help us keep this board looking neat and professional. We take huge pride in how well presented and polished this board has always looked - it is WHY we are the World's most successful stamp board by far. We all can do our bit. :)

Did use preview on talking stamps post, First print i deleted and reduced by 50% then reloaded, Still considered it to large and reduced it another 50%, Third time considered it a bit small but let it go, Then loaded 2 booklets, Took up too much space so deleted one, Other looks a bit large but shows the existence of a minimum of 3 series in the set, Invitations-fun and i think the 3rd one is Birthdays but just guessing as it is a very poor image, Joll's catalogue has a list of 22 stamps but i don't know how you would divide them by three? no mention of the series noted on his list.
My posting skills are a work in progress, over 10 years since i have posted elseware.

Waitomo caves. Judging by Joll's catalogue there are 3 sets,
Don't have any of the first set, but might be $1.50 without an internet address,
Second set has the internet address down left hand side,
Third set has internet address down right side, Kiosk has also been updated, on dx website.
