Orange Color stripe on 1982 Canada Christmas Stamp

Any thoughts as to what this Orange stripe is on the the left side of this stamp?

This is Scott #973 Issued in 1982.

Unitrade mentions varieties of this stamp with Orange background, but I don't really think that is it?



Unitrade: "Repellex error, part of colour missing on part of one column of 10stamps. Four sheets are also known with similar error causing 40% to 60% of the background of all right margin stamps to be orange rather than bright red.



Definitely not 40% of the background. But I do note that the orange never seems to extend into the white.

Looks like you may have come across a "Repellex" variety different from that described in the catalogue. I have seen the one described on almost an entire stamp and this orange showing on your copy looks very similar to the one I saw. Not sure how this one may have occurred on such a small portion of the stamp. It would be interesting to know what part of the sheet it came from but there is really no way to tell.

Maybe there is an expert out there who can talk to this one

Can you clarify the use of "Repellex" with respect to this?

Google tells me it's an animal repellent......

It refers to missing or colour variant. Several Canadian stamps have this flaw in the printing process. There may be a "printing expert" out there who can explain the technical aspects of this

I am not a printing expert, but my understanding is that a repellex error occurs when there is a spillage of a cleaning fluid (Repellex). The fluid is used to prevent build up of excess ink on the rollers.

This looks like it may be similar to the REPELLEX block of 6 I have on my Varieties Page:



From Pierron's EFO catalogue (pg 428):

"....variety occurred due to spillage of cleaning fluid (trade name Repellex) designed to prevent the buildup of excess ink on the rollers."

Those of your specific issue are also partial orange, but usually almost half the background is altered.

Wow this is pretty cool. I don't get to find things like this too often.

Unitrade says: "Values range from $100 to $350 depending on the percentage of orange background"

So low end of that for me...Maybe even less since it is just a small stripe of it.

Here is an example I found on the net for sale: Color looks similar to mine. They have theirs priced at $175.
