Having trouble searching on Stampboards? Here is a solution

Post by MargoZ »

Admin has had a powerful site specific Google site search facility added to this board as a paid enhancement.

This should greatly improve members ability to search content within the board.

Also, see the regular Search box under our logo at the base of each page.

The Google one works very well for full phrases or strings of words.

Any feedback you would like to make, positive or negative is most welcome - please post to this thread.

Margo

I just only saw this and found the Google Search was far superior to the one listed above. As I tried to find something using the standard one, but to no avail, using the Google one, I found what I was looking for straight away. 8)

Thanks for putting the Google search for us to use. 8)

I hope it will become a permanent feature on this site.

Good evening Admin,

I regularly use google to satisfy my curiosity on such bizarre topics as the significance of the dates of issue for commemorative stamps, the biography of persons shown on stamps, the locations within countries of buildings, sites or views shown on their stamps etc. I've had better success with goggle than most other search engines and I'm pleased to see it's inclusion here. I'm currently doing research on Newfoundland stamps at the moment, specifically the Publicity issues, without google this would be a very time consuming task and I would probably loose interest if the progress was too slow.

Great inclusion Admin.
Regards,

Chainsaw.

Greetings MargoZ,

I started a topic "Australia unposted FDCs for mail use" a few days ago and neither I nor a couple of others cannot find a previous thread under a simiar topic.

I did find an ozstamps post but not what I was after.

I have used both search engines.

It seems to me that I need to know more.

Any suggestions please?

Cheers, Kev.

Happy 2009 to you & Glen.

As Kev above, the inbuilt Search does not appear to deliver expected results.

As an example: I know I'd posted a thread on a Cricket cinderella from the Courier magazine.

Various searches failed to locate it.

Eventually had to scroll through all my posts to find this.

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2991

I then used various searches using words from the post eg cricketer or courier cinderella or cricketer stumps or Courier mag Cinderellas yet no hits on it.

In Google itself, searches for Courier mag Cinderellas and "cricketer viewed" Adam found it straight away.

What's up :?:

Stampboards upgraded to a new platform in December 2008, and unfortunately the internal search engine does not recognise any searches of topics made under the old platform (i.e., any posts made before the upgrade). The other unforseen result of the upgrade was the loss of every scan then on the Boards, and volunteers spent 100's of hours recovering the pictures that are such a vital part of the Boards.

I guess it's a bit like trying to use a floppy disc in a CD-ROM drive. The technology advances, but the cost is a loss of older information.

True enough Ron. When I was heavily involved with the Victorian Government Public Records archiving upgrades in a previous life, I was told something which has stuck ever since.

"If microfilm existed 500 years ago, we would no longer have the Magna Carta."

I always have a notebook and pencil, sometimes a pen, in my pocket.

I started that when I was at school, then at Tech, through my career, and still in retirement.

If you click on 'View your posts' you can then search for words within those posts. May not still produce the desired result, but I use it often and I've generally been successful.

What's up?

As they say in the best tech support handbooks - "USER ERROR"

I typed the word "cricketer" into our on board google search above and your old 2007 post was on page 1 of the matches as shown below.

My sincere apologies that we were not able to get it higher than a page 1 match for you.

Out tech division is working hard to do better next time.

I will flay them without mercy on your behalf.

In the meantine the not inconsiderable money I pay each year to have that google site specific search in action works well - for me anyway - on these older threads.

The only way I know of searching within a thread is the very slow and clunky way of using your Edit header and the find (on this page) function. It can (obviously) only be done one page at a time for any particular thread.

Yes Norm, thats the method I have been using and painful it is!! I was hoping there was a quick way I was unaware of.

Would be a good feature to impliment especially on those multi page threads that you know something particular was mentioned and you wish to quickly and easily find it.

Quite a lot depends on your software. I believe with some versions of IE you have to call the 'find' function for every try. With Firefox you can use Ctrl+F and the bottom bar of the window becomes your search area, with buttons for 'next' / 'previous'.

If you then move to the next page on the thread, that search string stays, and you can simply click 'next' again.

And if the term is not present, then the background to the search string is red as soon as the page is loaded, which saves a lot of time.

Yes, I prefer the Firefox page search however that is still say 69 clicks I have to do if searching the KGV thread. I was hoping that the phpBB software had a function that could be added so that a search within the KGV thread may narrow me down to perhaps three possible pages of my search for example.

Hmm. I hoped Google's advanced search might help, but it only narrows down to domain, not to part of domain. Never mind. Maybe there are just too many pages on the KGV Help thread. What also won't help is if you search for values and somebody has typed in 1½d as 1 1/2d - you'll only find one or the other.

Try including the THREAD TITLE in the search query. It is necessary to enclose the TITLE in double quotes, so Google will treat it as a phrase or a single term. Without the quotes every word of the title becomes a separate term and many common words such as "and", "to" and "the", if present, will be ignored.

You could use 'find', hit Control F and you get a search drop down box. Type your search in there but it will only do a page at a time, still saves searching every post.

Has this already been tried (I just tried & it worked) & discussed:
Copy the thread into MS Word and do the search there.
Depends of course on the quantity your copy-function can manage.

Sorry if I warm up an old soup.

Click drag release copy, Command A copy or Select All copy captures the one web page. Capturing 10 pages of a thread - That I don't know besides manually. Within a page, you can always do a word search as well (Command F). That can be useful. ... I do like the Google search. It is a step forward.

Question: Is it possible to search Stampboards for other members by location? For example, my base is now Singapore. Can I search for all members that have location = Singapore in their profile?

Thanks,

There are quite a few ways to search what you want on stampboards, but it would be really great if the "Search this topic" feature of phpBB could be activated. Like GizzyGuy had mentioned previously, this function's use really is when you are trying to search within topics which themselves take more than 50 pages, e.g 'Engraved beauties'.

I know this request sounds like asking for more when you have a lot.
Stamps are like small portraits hung on wall-like envelopes.

I have no trouble finding info within a long thread. It all depends on how many key words you type in and whittle the results down.

Once you have results, you can then search within just those results and keep reducing the hits until you find what you were after.

Also, a nice feature would be to enable whole topic view in one page!

As far as I know there already is a way to search within topic on this board.

Let's say for example you want to see if anyone has posted an Austria stamp in the Engraved Stamp Beauties thread.

If you use the 'Search' facility at the top of the board, enter the exact name of the thread you want to search then further down in the 'Search Within' section choose the radio button for 'Topic Titles Only'.

The best way by the way to get the exact name of the thread is to go to it, highlight it with your cursor and copy/paste it in and for the reason why it needs to be exact see Norm's explanation earlier on in this thread.

Your search return should now look like this;

Image

If you then use the top right box for 'Search these results' the board will filter out any posts that don't have your keyword 'Austria' in them leaving you with a clean list to look through.

Give it a try!

You actually want to open a view and wait for all the posts to load for something like the Aussie KGV thread and expect 200 pages of 50 posts a page + 10,000 posts including about 20,000 images to load in one go?

Many of the queries above would not be here if folks used the powerful google site specific search function that cost me a great deal of money to add to all 100,000 pages here -

If the phrase of word is posted ANYWHERE on stampboards you will find it readily there.

On a different site that I am a member of, the search function has been extended to cater for the following options:

1. Find word(s)
Match
(a) all words,
(b) any words

Then there is a box to "check" in order to "Search titles only."

2. Find author
3. Find by date "from date" to "to date"
4. Find in forum

Its convenient and allows you to narrow your search down.

Unfortunately there will be a cost involved to add something similar here.

However, I have a completely different question to the one above.

I have been browsing these forums (via the search function) for certain countries and/or topics. In every instance the Google search cuts off on 10 pages.

So the 1st question is: Has the Google search been set to "cut-off" after 10 pages, or is this purely coincidental?

With over 3.8 million posts so far, it would appear to me that the cut-off was set at 10 pages.

So the 2nd question is: Can the Google search be reconfigured to include everything specified in the search?

I am finding some seriously interesting stuff to read here and would absolutely just hate it if there were additional posts/topics on the subject searched for which I am missing because the "cut-off" search has been set at 10 pages.

Not really, as these functions have all been present for the past 7 years here AFAIK.

I'd never realised that the google search would limit at the top most popular threads but only 10 pages. It does Glen. But that would include multiple posts within the same thread.

However when I searched for something like 'penny' on the board search at the top, it returned 142 pages x 50 posts which is thousands. But that might only be a few actual threads.

I don't often get stumped in my searches though, usually it's trying to whittle down the results!

Well what sort of genius searches for "penny"? 8)

Why not search for "stamp" or "red" and report back folks, to waste even more time.

Search for any word combo that anyone of bog basic intelligence will look for and no results exceed 10 pages.

Well there seem to be more than 2,600 threads (or maybe just hits) on "penny black" (there's a more common criteria for you  ) but the google search only gives you 100. So the other 2,500 threads cannot be easily found that way!

I did not search for penny using google, I was trying to show that the top of page board search will give far more results for a single word search based on actual posts and not just threads. I haven't got time to work my way through that many results and as I've said before, I use word combinations to narrow down what I'm after.

Why then, though, is google restricted to a small top 100? There will be quite a few searches using bog basic intelligence that will result in more than 100 thread hits. :P 5 years ago a top 100 of any subject would hardly be reached, but you've grown a lot bigger than that as a research database.

OK, I missed the search function at the top of the page. I was using the Google search at the bottom of the page.

Using Google.co.uk advance search "penny black" site:www.stampboards.com produces '1690 results' - but only 254 are actually listed.
"In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 254 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included. "

Hi There :-) thank you very much for the alternate "Search Facility" post. I am looking for other collectors who collect Birds on stamps and will try the Google search.

By all means look for birds using one of the search engines but here is the main thread - http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=275. You will also come across a couple of threads featuring birds, rather than birds on stamps.

We look forward to your input.

Hi BirdPhilatelist
I have plenty Lesotho birds... even thinking of sticking some on a piece of furniture & varnishing it over. I'm out on the farm about 120km from Bryanston...

Dear Administrator,

Can you please check the possibility of having a functionality on Stampboards like "Follow the Gurus" where us disciples tag on to Gurus and check the posts made by them. e.g. I collect Indian stamps and would like to see the posts made by few senior members at one place as most posts by them are scattered over multiple threads.
