Where Can I Buy A Mint USA stamp Collection?

Post by niosurfer »

I have experience collecting stamps and I have most stamps from South America.

But I would like to start an USA collection, mostly mint stamps. I was looking on Ebay for good deals on albums with many stamps so I can start in the right direction.

But because I know very little about US stamps, I don't know where to start and what is a good collection to buy.

Disregarding price, so I can learn and later look for good deals myself, would you be so kind to point me out to Ebay links, or other links, that you think it is a good US collection to buy to start my US collection?

Thanks!

Hi niosurfer

You say you know very little about US stamps, well in that case you know a little bit more then me.

I'd say it comes down to what you want to spend and what era you want to collect.

Looking at collections for sale on say ebay is going to do you no good if you know nothing about the stamps in that collection.

I'd say get yourself some US catalogues and start reading through them, The more you read the more you'll know.

Also have you tried looking for US stamp threads on here ?

Thanks for trying to help. I have the Specialized SCOTT Catalogue for US stamps, but it is not reader friendly, it is more to be used as a reference, not as reading material I think.

Maybe a need a book instead of catalogue that explains how the US stamps are organized across the years, the various types (regular, air mail, commemoratives, postal, newspaper, etc.).

Or maybe there is a better catalogue than Scott, easier to study and read instead of being just a reference?

There are lots of American dealers who major in buying and selling collections on ebay. The ones that would sorely tempt me when I have a browse are the ones who have images for every single page in the collection, together with informative notes as to whether these are mint or used, hinged or hingeless, etc. etc. I went through a phase of buying US Plate Blocks and Mint Sheets and the ones with good photos and descriptions were the ones that met their promises.

OK you are buying singles, and older stamps are more likely to have variations not visible on a photo, but if buying a collection, assume the worst and price the oldest ones at the price of the cheapest variety. At this stage in this endeavour specifically buying expensive varieties is not something under consideration, I wouldn't have thought.

But is this what you really want to do, to buy something that is approaching "complete"? The fun of collecting is surely doing so in dribs and drabs, searching for the gaps in what you have.

For US singles I prefer Scott to Gibbons. Although Plate Block collectors would use Durland - my old 1984 copy disintegrated and today, yes, today I received the 2016 edition. Looking through this it could take the place of Scott, full of colour illustrations but, be warned, it could turn you into a Plate Black collector! Reason a "normal" collector would find Durland useful is that you get the insight as to how stamps fit together on a sheet or coil, but be warned also that not all stamps are illustrated. Collecting Plate Blocks helps in buying varieties because the Plate Block number nails down more precisely what exactly it is that you are buying. Less need to get the magnifying glass out.

One of the reasons Plate Blocks are interesting is that it gives some insight into production techniques: perforations, making sure plates are the right way up after the Inverted Jenny debacle - but they still managed to get them wrong for the Dag Hammarskjöld issue https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dag_Hammarskj%C3%B6ld_invert
Then there's the electric-eye printings. It's easier to see all these things with a block.

You say your catalogue is not user friendly, but you don't have to read every word. Have a quick skim: do you like the look of the stamps? are there lots of shades, watermarks, perforations - if there are, do they interest you? if there are no shades etc - will there be enough to keep you interested?

Have a look at the prices of a few of the more expensive stamps, then check what a dealer is charging for them, this will give you an idea of affordability - I like the look of mint early France, but can't afford them

I know next to nothing about US stamps, so these are general points

Depends entirely on what era you seek AND your budget.

USA stamps span over 150 years, and is a huge undertaking. So securing smaller segments at a time is very wise.

I yesterday listed up a nice fresh NH 1990 collection here at UNDER face value.

Or, if someone wants near 100 years of scattered USA in one book for $US38, or the cost of dinner, as a basic starter collection - this kind of thing might appeal - it all comes down to your BUDGET!

With stamps, as with all things in life, there is no free lunch -- you get EXACTLY what you pay for. :)

Are you looking for certain years? Air mail and back of book included?

Early U.S. Stamps can get expensive and tricky identifying the different types.

Air Mails including the Zeppelins? Interest in revenue stamps?

More detail will help.

A Zeppelin like this will set you back $200 - $300 for one stamp

I would like you to suggest getting a good magnifying glass for these collections.

The United States Stamp Society sells a book called "Encyclopedia of United States Stamps". It is pretty much what you are looking for as a first insight into US stamps.

As for buying a collection, all the major and minor US auction houses often have bulk lot collections. My guess is most/all of those lots have the key stamps removed and offered individuallyso don't expect to find rarities in any of those. So just take a look at past and future auctions for those bulk lots to get an idea where prices are for what material is offered.

US is an extremely diversified area to collect so you might also consider specialising on some particular "thing".If you want anything, you'll quickly run out of cash..

Thanks for the valuable tip! Is that the book you are talking about?
