What website for as new as possible Japanese stamps?

Post by Ricky93 »

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a, preferably English-language, website with the newest Japanese stamp issues.
So that I can keep up with what new stamps Japan issues.

And as second question, can I order directly from the Japanese stamp office, and if so where?

Can someone advise me with a website?

Hope someone can help me with this one.

Kind regards,
Ricky93

Hello Ricky93,

Colnect updates their country catalogues regularly. Japan's July 8th, Mozu-Furuichi Tumulus World Heritage Site stamps are the last entry for Japan.

Okay thank you both for the link to colnect.
I am going to take a look there.

Here in Holland we have a Royal Dutch Stamp/Post webshop where we can order the newest stamp issues.
Does Japan also has some kind of similar system/webshop?
I mean something like this: https://shop.postnl.nl/webshop/collect-club
Thanks for reading my message!

Commemorative stamps by year (Japanese only, but with pictures):

Forget about online shopping with Japan Post from overseas.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for supplying the link, and thank you norvic too.
I think then I'll stick to colnect for what issues means.

But where in the EU I can order the most of the newest issues?
And why not order from JP itself?

Hope to hear from you.
Kind Regards,

Ricky93

That seems to be a fairly regular Japanese phenomenon. About six months ago I tried to order some stuff off the official Olympic site, but they too don't accept orders from outside Japan.

Hi Ricky,

My local dealer buys new issues from Japan Post. He has to send his order by snail mail and top up his account by bank transfer. Not something for individual collectors I reckon.

Certainly a lot of businesses in Japan do not want to deal with overseas customers. But in this case, could it be because the Olympic rings and other symbols are subject to copyright arrangement between IOC and the Japanese? My dealer, who normally gets new issues from Japan Post, said Japan Post cannot sell him the earlier Olympic stamps, so he had to buy from some Japanese stamp dealers.

Or maybe they just don't won't to have to deal with mail that does not arrive. Sending letters to certain African, Asian or Latin American countries can probably be too much 'work' to solve these issues. Even sending registered it does not mean it will arrive, as I have experienced a few times when exchanging stamps.

I don't know what period you mean by 'earlier'. Certainly the IOC only licences postal authorities to sell Olympic-ringed stamps for a certain period. This starts four years before for the host country, and ends at the end of the calendar year in which the summer games are held, as far as I can remember.

Thank you Ian for explanation.

As for Japan Philatelic Agency, they are an agency importing foreign stamps to Japan. The online shop in the link actually offers Chinese stamps that were "issued several years ago" and hence it' is possible "to sell oversea(s)".

The address given in the link is a nice little philatelic museum together with the main shop of the Japan Philatelic Agency and a few local dealers. Very much worth a visit when you are in Tokyo.

So it comes down, as a foreigner I cannot directly buy stamps directly from Japan Post.
Is there any other solution (i.e. a reseller) for EU-based members who want to get the stamps directly after issuing?
Thanks for reading my message!

You could place a standing order with a dealer, but you'd have to be pretty brave or have deep pockets.

Japan Post issued 500 stamps just in 2019. As most of them were 80 yen that's approaching 40,000 yen, say about 300 euro plus shipping for a single year.

Are you sure you want to go there?

Okay, thanks for the reply.
I am not intending to buy all year packets, that is indeed too expensive, I know.
It was more because if they issue a neat sheet that I wanted to have, where I can buy such an issue... ;)

Then I think you should register on Colnect. Thanks to that site I have managed to grow my Japanese collection in 5 years to 8 127 different items. If there is something you really like / want, you can see if someone has it for exchange or to sell for example. minisheets or souvenir sheets might be a bit more difficult perhaps to see if someone has it for exchange.

"Japan Philatelic Agency", JPS, the "Philatelic Museum Meijiro" are all private and have nothing to do with Japans official postal carrier, Japanpost.jp

Japan once once had an official "philatelic agency" which worked on the deposit system.
Minimum deposit was Yen 10.000. Individual orders as well as standing orders (e.g. "1 piece of each new stamp") were acceptable. I closed down my account in the 1990s with the ever growing new issue flood.

The last postal address was
Tokyo Central Post Office / Philatelic Section CPO Box 888 / Tokyo 100-8799. Japan
Dealt with individual orders for mint stamps. Orders at face, postage extra.

It became a victim of privatization of Japanpost and closed down sometimes before ca. ?2011.

More precise and detailed info of course welcome!
