Help with fair pricing here for these older, better cat, stamps?

Post by kuikka »

.
Hi all,

I was asked by an elder gentleman with limited to no IT skills to put a fair price for better stamps. I will use this thread for that purpose. Kindly provide assistance in setting fair price.

I myself by very rarely deal in sets of stamps (bulk is cheaper), so I have only limited ability to do the job myself. If anything needs additional checking, better scans etc., feel free to ask. I do what I can.

Mods, if this thread is in wrong location, kindly put it where it belongs to.

If the stamps I show here are of interest for board members, please inform me and I will ask, if the gentleman is willing to put them on sale here. He may well agree, if that is a way to move these stamps.

Thank you in advance for all the help.

Kuikka's "help needed in pricing" of worldwide stamps?

OR

Kuikka's "help needed in pricing" of random stamps?

OR

etc...

Your thread title should be a question.

Kimmo,

I have kindly edited your thread title to, "Can members please help in pricing of different worldwide stamps?"

You have changed it to, "Kuikka's "Can members please help in pricing of different worldwide stamps?"

Which means that the stamps belong to you, but they actually don't.
kuikka wrote:I was asked by an elder gentleman with limited to no IT skills to put a fair price for better stamps.

You have added, in the first post of the thread, that you are helping someone with limited IT skills get a valuation of his stamps. That is enough information for all the members here, you are assisting a collector with the valuation of his collection. Good for you. :)

Panel 1 in order shown.

1. Morocco Agencies SG 225 used SG CV £12
2. British Levant SG 50 used SG CV £40
3. British Levant SG L24 mint SG CV £38
4. British Levant SG 49 mint SG CV £25

Catalogue values from Gibbons 2020 Edition.

Where there are different shades listed, I have used the lowest catalogue values listed.

Total CV is £115.

I use 20-25% of CV as a guide to pricing.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Panel 2 in order shown.

1. British Levant SG L24 used CV £100
2. British Levant SG 50 used CV £40 (badly trimmed at top)
3. Morocco Agencies SG 200 mint CV £5
4. Morocco Agencies SG 200 used CV £1.50

Catalogue values from 2020 Gibbons, lowest price used when shades are listed.

No 2 is badly trimmed and worth significantly less than a good copy.

Cheers

Agree.

''The good sells the bad.''

The 10/- Blue has a missing corner - near unsalable on its own.

Include it in the set for £20 or so - ''Cat £115.20 - mostly fine condition - see scans'' and it will find a new home. 8-)

Hi kuikka,

Panel 3 are all quite common stamps.

In order shown:

SG 29 mint CV £15
SG 29 used CV £2.25 (toned)
SG 30 used CV £3.25
SG 31 mint CV £5
SG 32 mint CV £8.50

Panel 4 are again common stamps.

In order shown:

SG 132 used CV £3.75
SG 102 used CV £0.80
SG S3 mint CV £0.40 (toned)

Panel 5 contains a couple of better stamps but unfortunately condition is not good on some of them.

In order shown:

SG 316b mint CV £7.50 (assumed cheapest perf and is toned)
SG 299 used CV £50 (looks to be badly thinned)
SG 295 used CV £10
SG 287 mint CV £55
SG 217 mint CV £35 (creased)
SG 217 used CV £4.25 (badly thinned)
SG 217 used CV £4.25

SG 217 has watermark varieties, pricing is for normal watermark as I can't distinguish the watermark from the scans.

In my opinion the thinned stamps would be space fillers only.

Toned & creased stamps significantly reduce value.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Bill

Bill,

Thank you again.

Perforation for 5-1 (identified as SG 316b) is 12.5x12.5.

Watermarks for 5-5 to 5-7 (identified as SG 217) are the same: Crown CC upright. In 5-7 I spotted 2 small thins.

5-2 is badly thinned, as you mentioned.

Hi Kuikka,

For Panels 4 and 5 I would say about £15 with much ( about 2/3) of the value in the $1 stamp

Thanks

Hi Kuikka,

For Panels 4 and 5 I would say about £15 with much ( about 2/3) of the value in the $1 stamp

Thanks

Lundy :)

Lundy,

Thank you very much for your advice. I saw it earlier but forgot to reply.

Hi Kuikka,

9-3 is a good stamp which would sell for £15 ish. The rest of panel 9 pretty ordinary, perhaps in total including 9-3 £18-£20...

Hi Kuikka

Seems obvious, but would not a look at the relevant SG catalogue for most of these stamps be useful.

The rest of the assessment would then rest on condition (mint, perfs, thins, cancels, hingedness etc.) and here SB comments would be most valid in affecting the ´fair`asking price.

I suppose we all enjoy picking at stamps, so your showing is fine, but an accelerated approach would involve initial reference to the SG ´valuations`. Most of what you show would be at around the 5-10% SG CV (is the what we are seeing reported from others who make comments?).

Of course if you have no SG catalogues then using the SB platform is fine, as long as people respond.

Also, whether stamps are to be grouped or sold as a large lot, needs work. This has been stated above, but often can be the bonus factor. The best split then to optimise possible sales.

I note that your high quality and resolution scans sometimes are sometimes a little unkind to stamps, every blemish shown, front and back! Honest scans though, certainly enough to assess those quality factors mentioned above. I am sure the person you are helping is appreciative.

Of course, the standards showing stamps, say in eBay, often fall far short of your efforts.

John,

Thank you for your comments. As I help another person, the sales price don't make it worth for me to buy a new catalogue, which would be anyhow difficult to receive during COVID times. My out-of-date catalogues do not have up to date prices, as I use them mostly for identification purposes, not for prices.

Regarding my knowledge of stamps, these are mostly more expensive stamps than what I have in my collection (which is basically a huge kid's collection). That means I don't know these stamps at all. I could very easily make basic mistakes with these. For example the overprinted seahorses in panels 1 and 2. I would not have noticed that there are at least two types of base stamp. So I am grateful for any help I get for the community.

I was yesterday talking with the gentleman who owns these stamps. He seems to be happy to sell them through Stampboards, so, after we (I and him) have sorted out the technical details, they are likely to be posted here in For Sale forum. I need to learn how to do correctly that, too.

Regarding high resolution scans that are making every small defect visible, I want to make sure that the prices are friendly. That means that the quality of stamps should be what expected (or better) by buyer.

Regarding pricing. Latokai lover said the correct price should be 20-25% of CV. You say 5-10% of CV. What is correct?

Is the picture you show of the reverse of 10-3 really of that stamp? From the front, there is a large perf at top left which is not on the back view.
IMHO, many of these stamps have problems - creases, perf faults and foxing, to name a few. Consequently, I think John is nearer the mark.

Phrag99,

Yes, 10-3 back is correct. There is a piece of translucent paper attached to the top of the stamp which I folded up to make the back scan. Being from the back, you can see the large perf on top right, as left and right get swapped when the stamp is turned.

Regarding the faults, I am aware most of them but have difficulties to estimate their effect to the value. That is why I ask advice. As mentioned earlier, the base stamps here are often better than what I have or buy, so I have little experience of that. Toning and foxing are terms I am not very familiar with and it would be more difficult for me to understand their effect. In Finland air is fairly dry, which make these less a problem here.

Hi again Kuikka.

Pricing. You show excellent scans and from them ´we`can evaluate condition. The SG CV is based on very fine examples with light cancellations, undisturbed perfs., good centering etc. Their CV prices tend to be high.

So the CV goes down according to the presence of such imperfections. These can be assessed by ´us`and a value given based on SG CV and any accumulation of imperfections.

Pulled perfs, missing perfs., heavy cancels, poor centering, thins, etc., then all hammer down the price.

I think the sums being quoted to you by others take these into account.

An overall SG CV of near to 10% is probably the safest estimate, particularly if you need to sell them easily. Certain of the scarcer stamps can be ascribed higher SG % as they have scarcity-appeal that counters imperfections. I think that people have indicated this above.

The trick will be to manage how the stamps are packaged, remembering that people have different collecting interests.

Keep it up.

John
