GDR/DDR Stamp album pages. Download? Design my own?

Post by Ricky93 »

Hi everyone,

I have a question.

I have already a large collection of GDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) stamps, but I have them stored the old fashion way in stockbooks.

Now I would love to have them sorted and in mounting strips on album pages.

But I am not thinking about the DAVO/Lighthouse album pages, that is too fancy for me (and way too expensive, too).

Does someone here on the WWW has some album pages for the whole collection (DDR 1945/49-1990), that are free of charge?

Or do I need to design it myself, for the least expansive option...?

I hope this post is in the right forums, because I doubted between the sections "You ask the questions - SOMEONE will have the answers!" and "Discuss stamps - and *anything* at ALL happening with stamps".

Thanks in advance and greetings from Europe.

Well, stockbooks are very forgiving.
Don't have the full set?.... The stockbook forgives you.
Missing sets from a year? ... The stockbook forgives you.
Missing whole years, or blocks? ... The stockbook forgives you.
Have extras, or pairs / gutters? ... The stockbook forgives you.
etc ...

And all these omissions come back to the fore when you try to shoehorn your collection into anything pre-printed.

I had a quick look a the size of your ambition : DDR has about 3,000 catalogue numbers between 1949 and 1990.
That's a lot to mount.

Then I looked how SAFE DUAL tackled it (and yes, very pricy!!)

safe_dual_germany.jpg
SAFE DUAL East Germany pages (Over 450 pages and $2,000, plus binders)

Now, you didn't state if mint or used, but the overarching constraint on this project, I think, will be your time (and how you value that).

Editing and printing 450 free pages (assuming available), then mounting over 3,000 individual settings is a very time consuming job.

If you have a passion for it, and have the time, good luck.

Start small, with the pages in the link of the earlier poster (Firewolf, above), and see "if that extra level of presentation adds or detracts from your enjoyment of your collection".

One thing is for sure - If you do splash out on $2,000 of pages (plus binders), it will not add "even a quarter of the expended amount" to the value of your collection. I regularly see these $200 albums, and 95% complete with all the stamps in, they do not sell for much money at all (in the UK).

Your collection must be a labour of love, plain and simple .....
Because economically, your stamps are already resting in the best place they could be (Stockbooks).
So much flexibility, so little outlay.

@Firewolf: Thanks I knew that website and checked it, but couldn't find the pages I was looking for.

@ViccyVFU, I didn't thought about the sheer size of all those stamps, indeed about 3000+.
I did not knew that that would be a very time consuming job.
As I read your post, it becomes very clear that I can better let them sit im my stockbooks, although they aren't my stock (or overstock).
So that is why I was thinking about a more fancy way of displaying them.
But after your post, I'd rather not think about that, and the time it will consume.

Thanks for your clear post, and I now know what to do.

PS. Then I can use the money better for some other transactions of my/this hobby.

Are you sure? You are looking for DDR 1945-1990. That's what I read in the description of this zip-file. I haven't opened and checked it.

Next, I agree with ViccyVFU. It is a time consuming job and it is not exactly free too. You still have to buy the mounts. You need paper to print on and ink is also not very cheap. A mount cutter is also very useful, but not too expensive.

I do not like stockbooks for my collection. I do not like them because they are not easy to reorganise the stamps. When you need extra space somewhere in the middle, you have to shift all stamps.
About 30 years ago I started investing in Prinz stockpages (see image below); different brands exist. I agree, they have their price too, but I like them because of the easy reorganisation of the stamps. Through the years I have accumulated 100s of these pages. They exist single sided and double sided.

I also have 2 country collections: used Austria and used Egypt. These collections are fully organised in these Prinz pages. From time to time I am also considering on putting the stamps on proper pages with mounts. I have done that for some series and years already. I then create my pages myself as I actually like doing that. An example image below. But I also know that "time" is the issue to put my complete collection on pages this way.
And also, what stops me in doing it this way. What to do with an extra stamp? For example a variety, a perfin, a different color, ... in Austria for example, I am specialising in the 1890/1907 period. A period in which the stamps have a lot - and I mean a lot - of different perforations. Then these stock pages are very useful.

I did download the zip, and opened it, and it seems to have around 13 pages of fairly tight-nit display, in each section.

Don't get me wrong, "a great starter" for those with co-incident interests, magnificent effort by CliveL (A member here) and all free - what's not to love?

Prinz pages (or equivalent) are a definite step up from stockbooks, but if you are heavily invested in the latter, hardly worth the expense and time for an upgrade, unless you acquire the pages over time, and slowly transition.

I see you illustrated with some Austria (as we Brits call it .... Another issue "Localisation to your language").

Just by way of comparison, I have a SAFE DUAL set of pages for Austria 1965-74, so took three pics to illustrate subsequent points :

IMG_2857.JPG
SAFE DUAL set 2245 Austria - Illustrated Backing Page (Printed)

IMG_2856.JPG
SAFE DUAL set 2245 Austria - Overlay Page, with stamps (Clear)

IMG_2858.JPG
SAFE DUAL set 2245 Austria - Overlay Page, but from the back

Now what I'm hoping you can see is that the clear overlay page can hold MNH, MH, used or margined, or all of them, side by side.

Presentation looks nice, but at a price.

That price is paid by the first owner of the pages (As part of what I often refer to as "Joy of Ownership").

They may have sunk a couple of hundred dollars into the pages and binder (just this one!!), plus "who knows what" on the contents, and yet, come resale time, I'd be lucky to see $50 for it "lock, stock and barrel".

And that's the thing with modern collectables, mint, mounted or used...

... Often, you really are not creating "a valuable property, going forward", you are just creating "something that you enjoy, to while away your finite hours on Earth".

Ricky93,

What not designing the album by yourself as you suggested? with a simple Microsoft Publisher program, for instance, you can create your album and decide how to display your stamps. I created several albums, the main of them is for Laos 1951-2015 that issued more than 2500 stamps in that years. The Laos' album has 450 pages (but with descriptions).

As mentioned above, DDR issued 3000 stamps and I know it is not easy to design such large album. It took me 5 years to design the Laos album. But, from the other hand, most of DDR stamps were issued in large sets (4-10 stamps) with same stamp size in a set, so designing the page is more easy since you can duplicate the frames of each page.

Here is one for example. Since the stamps are same size, today it takes me 10 minutes to design such page (I inserted images since I sold the album, but of course, if you design the pages for yourself, no need to insert images):

Page 9 - Indo-China.jpg

I don't have a computer generated page for stamps of DDR, but here is one old page shows DDR set from my "Mythologies" collection created by handwriting, before I started using Microsoft Publisher:

As the Members above have suggested designing your own pages is an interesting activity in itself. The problem with "pre-printed" is that they may be more specialized than you collect or include very high priced items which you could never afford, leaving a gap. Eli's pages are particularly nicely put together- I'm afraid I just use the ordinary Word program.

I certainly don't have a comprehensive collection of DDR (they issued so many!) but here are the first issues:

DDR Page Scan.jpg
(I do include a black and white image as helps in positioning stamp!)

Of course, if you use mounts for a large collection then it can become expensive! For very cheap stamps (which most of DDR are) why not just use hinges?
