Theme it forward (mint)...

Posted: 14 Mar 2013 00:24
by joelk
This is a variation on Norm's brilliant thread: 'pay it forward'

It struck me that this thread tended to get stuck because of some level of inflation in the lots, and the fact that they were sometimes too eclectic to get picked up, but I think the operating principle makes a lot of sense, and works really well.

Many Stampboards members are thematic collectors, with the most popular themes being aviation, trains, flowers, cars, sports, etc...

So the principle stays the same:

1) You put up a lot here (lot 1).
2) someone (person A) decides they like it
3) They then put up a lot themselves (lot 2)
4) If their lot (lot 2) is chosen by yet another person (person B) who likes it, you send them (person A) your lot (lot 1)
5) The person who chooses lot 2 (person B) then needs to put up a lot themselves (lot 3), and so on...

In this case, let's keep these lots simple: a complete mint set, with a value of less than US$ 10, that illustrates a specific theme.

If you decide you like the set, you can choose it, and put up another set, in a theme that you wish (it can be a different theme), following the principles of the 'pay it forward' system described here.

Rules update as of February 15, 2020:
* After making a claim, you must post an offer within 24 hours, or your claim will be forfeited and the previous offer becomes available again.

* After making a claim, a member will have a maximum of 72 hours to make an offer that is accepted. The clock will start when the first offer is made. Offers can be replaced after 24 hours if not claimed. Thus, UP TO 3 offers can be made in the 72 hour period. If no offer is taken before the 72 hour expiration, then the claim is forfeited and the previous item is up for grabs again (by anyone).

This rule has been implemented to try and keep the thread moving and the quality of the offers high. Members should avoid offering items again that have not been claimed when offered previously.

Please post notifications of receipt and any scans of received covers in this thread: https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59213

As per the Rules of this Forum, members must be registered for 60 days and have 60 posts in order to participate.

So here is the first set to get this started:

The theme is 'trains', and this is a set issued by Belgium in 1985:

Joelk,

First of all, congratulations for your idea. I also like the topic "Pay it forward" and think that lot´s inflation was a problem.

Let´s try this way you suggest, but maybe with one change: we should send 3 or 4 sets of the same theme. One set sometimes isn´t worth shipping costs.

What about it?

Regards

Well, if every one stick to the rule that stamps must have a value of less than (or around) US$10, there is no difference how many complete sets will be in every offer. Sometimes one complete set may have a higher value than four different sets in total.

So, I would say it's up to every member how many complete sets he is able to offer. One, two or even five...

Cheers

BrewDog and Octaviop,

I understand where both of you are coming from, but I believe we will prevent the inflation to creep in by first sticking to one set.

This way, it will be easy for people to respond to each other (more chances to have one interesting set lying around than several) and people won't have to wonder: 'I have one of these sets but not the other two' and such like.

I also think that a big part of the fun is sending and receiving the covers that the stamps come in.

What I'd like to achieve is to make this thread move quickly from one member to the next, and avoid having anybody become self-conscious that they may not be able to match the offers here.

If I recall correctly, the pay-it-forward thread also had a $10 dollar limit or so, but then inflation really made it difficult to move forward, even if it was more volume than value inflation.

Please bear with me on this for a few days, and if it's not moving, we will revise the rules.

Cheers,
Joel.

Joel is quite correct. The Pay it Forward thread eventually died because it was too slow and got to big. As far as giving away stuff, there is no minimum value required so I cannot see where "10.00" comes into it at all. This should be just a fun little exchange with a bonus cover at the end.

And just for the record, I did not start the "Pay it Forward" thread, I just participated in it a lot.

Norm,

Thank you and my apologies for my incorrect recollection of some of the background on this.

Let's try it as defined (ie one set, no more than $10's worth, although I would expect most of the exchanges will be well below that).

Cheers,
Joel.

Mmm? :D

Everything is okay with your rules, Joel. I agree that this game must be easy to play. So the rule "one set" sounds fair.

I'm just saying that it could be up to every member how many complete sets to offer if the rules were changed.
No strict rules like "four complete sets" and sort of.

Cheers

Thank you for your understanding BrewDog!

Ok, let's get this one started.

I will add one rule to make this go faster: if a set is not picked up within, let's say five days, you either withdraw it and let someone else have a go, or swap it for another one.

I really want to make this thing go as fast as possible. It will be more fun that way.

So, anyone up for this train set?

Cheers,
Joel.

Hi joelk,

Great idea for a thread.

I am not a thematic collector but I like the train set.

In return, my offer is.

2012 Canada Titanic block of four, mint.

2012 Canada Titanic Souvenir Sheet, mint.

Thank you,

P.S. I hope I am following the rules.

Would it be possible to also include complete sets of used stamps as well as long as they meet the other criteria (one theme and under $10)?

Cheers,
Erik

Hi Erik,

I specified mint here because of the thematic nature, and to keep things comparable. Not everyone will like to trade mint for used.

Used is a good idea too, but I'd rather start a separate thread for that to keep things simple.

Bottom line is: not on this thread, but let me see what I can muster up in the next 24 hours to start another similar thread for used stamps.

Cheers,
Joel.

No worries AMark, a little less than four days left for someone to pick up Valan's set...

A little reminder: if the set does not get picked up in exactly 5 days, Valan can substitute it or someone else can jump in.

Sniping is allowed as long as the clock has run out. The Stampboards clock will be the judge.

I want to make this thread (and the other one for the used stamps) stay alive and tick over quickly.

I'm actually thinking to shorten the timeframe.

If one hits the five day mark, I might do that.

Speed is of the essence here to keep it interesting.

Cheers,
Joel.

Nasia, the time for your set has expired and there have been no takers.

It's time for you to propose a different set, that needs to be taken up in the next 48 hours, or to let someone else step in so they can get the Antwerp Zoo bird set!

Joel.

I believe that the time-period for accepting Nasia's offer has expired and now, one can come up with an offer for accepting the set of Bird stamps?

If that is the case, I would like to try to put up a set of stamps for the Bird stamps.

I will put up the images tomorrow morning, i.e. in about 8 hours from now, as it is already past midnight in India.

I would like to take up Joelk's offer of Birds of Antwerp Zoo. My offer is the following:-

1. 2012 horses issue from Cyprus

2. MS from India released in 2012 on the occassion of Philately Day

Please note that I am offering the above two sets TOGETHER and not on 'either or' basis. Hope that will prevent any confusion :)

Arnab

Sure!
the first MS is about the Israeli Anthem.
it can interest those who collect as a theme Judaica or stamps in different shapes.

The other is a full set of flowers, the set only has 2 stamps in it.

Nice offer. I'm tempted to accept that, as I collect stamps on flowers. And though I do not collect odd-shaped, the MS looks very appealing.

But I will see if Arianne(ajolicoe) goes in for this offer or not as she also collects stamps on flowers!!
If she doesn't, then I will butt in!! :P

Hi Arnab,
Since I collect fauna as a theme,
if you'll change your offer and replace the non-fauna related stamp sheet for some other fauna related stamps, I'll probably take the offer.
also, I have been mistaken and thought the flower set is complete, but it's not...
therefore- I can change my offer to the complete flower set (5-6 stamps I think...) and some other mint Israel flower stamps instead of the Israeli anthem MS. if you are interested let me know and I'll attach a picture of the updated offer, than you can decide which of the two you prefer.
