Cover or Postcard "Pay it Forward" Thread

Post by AMark »

Welcome to the Cover or Postcard Pay it Forward Thread!

How this works:

The idea would be to mail anonymously a cover or a postcard to a member that has expressed his or her interest in participating in this thread. The initial sender would select one member from the participant list, do a little research to see what this person likes and mail the cover or postcard to the selected member. Once the cover or postcard arrives, the recipient will select another person from the participant list and mail a cover or a postcard to that person, and so on…

Rules:

A Stampboards member for 60 days.
You have made a minimum of 60 posts on the forum.
You must post images of the cover or postcard received.
You must write that it's a "Pay it Forward" cover or postcard, on a note or on the postcard.

Have Fun!

drvvr,

When you receive a cover or a postcard, you will select a participant from the participant list and mail a cover or a postcard to that person. All the participants are not mailing covers or postcards at the same time. You are only posting a cover or a postcard when you receive one.

I hope this answers your question. :)

Mark,

Will we post pics of received items in this thread or will there be a separate thread for scans? Probably jumping the gun in asking, but just curious.
Many thanks!

Hi Mike,

That's a good question.

I'll let you guys decide. :)

Do you guys want images to be posted in this thread or would you prefer a separate thread?

Just for the sake of simplicity and/or less bookmark clutter, I think pics should be posted here in this thread. Not sure how much "discussion" will take place here, other than a few comments perhaps made on a postcard or cover, or questions on procedure or signing up in the future.

If everything is in one place, it seems like it will be easier to follow the progress of the forwarding.

Just my 2¢ ...
Many thanks!

Another random thought ... 'cause that's how I roll :-)

Not sure how this works in other Pay-it-Forward swaps, etc., but perhaps a discreet notation (like on the back of the cover or on the card) that indicates it's for this swap so that it doesn't get mistaken for something else. Maybe it's not necessary, but then again it might prevent confusion at some point.

Probably overthinking this ...
Many thanks!

Time to give this thread a bump, as a reminder.

It's been seven weeks since the first cover was posted. I don't know if it is missing in action or it has taken a detour. I hope that it will reach its destination. If someone (from the list) has received it and forgot to let us know, please do so.

Uh oh? Hope the AWOL piece of mail wasn't sent to me!

I just checked (because Mark is one of those exchange partners I often receive a cover or postcard out of the blue from) and I don't think I overlooked anything.

Since I thanked the wrong Stampboarder for a recent exchange/gift this weekend it's always possible though!

Mark,
Nothing received until now.
I think each one of us could start sending a cover to another. So, at least if a letter is lost the game doesn't stop.

elcooperativo,

Please don't send anything for the time being.

The idea was to send one cover or postcard to a participant and to wait until he/she received the item and sends another cover or postcard to someone else. I do not want this to become an obligation for participants, i.e. you must send a few covers or postcards because you have received a few. That is not the idea. I can see that this is taking more time than I had anticipated, but there is nothing that we can do. Let's be patient for few more days.

I think it's time to get this thread moving once again.

If the first cover or postcard turns up, great. If not, oh well!

Anyway, a few members were me asking if they could post a cover or postcard to a member on the list. Thank you so much Guys! I think my response, at that time, was to wait. After thinking about this, I decided to send another cover or postcard to a different participant. Why? Well, I think it was my responsibility to get this going and since nothing has turned up for four months, it's still my responsibility.

So, this is attempt #2. A cover or postcard has been sent on April 25th, 2017.

If we get favourable winds, the item should reach its destination early next week.

Well, I believe I am the first lucky recipient of the "official" Pay it Forward thread item and I couldn't be happier.

I only have this high value lenticular stamp mint -- who but us geeks is going to put $10 postage on an envelope? -- and it was the third Star Trek item I've received from Mark inside a week. :o

Not that I am complaining!

Perfect timing, too.

This week I received in the mail a very cool and rare modern item I had ordered for someone on this thread who likes historic stamps/covers and I am most happy to PAY IT FORWARD!

Thanks muchly Mark!

George:

Very glad you enjoyed the Pay It Forward item.

For those wondering, here's a little more information about the mail train courtesy of the Minnesota Transportation Museum website:

This standard postcard shows the Northern Pacific #1102, one of the last functional Railway Post Offices (RPO) in North America! The RPOs were owned by the railroads, operated by the US Post Office, and delivered high speed mail across the country for over a century. This postcard will receive the first RPO postmark in some 40 years and will be mailed to you via the Northern Pacific #1102! Your item will be postmarked 6 May, 2017.

This car is one of the last functioning Railway Post Offices in North America!! It is currently one of two certified for movement on mainline rail!

We are partnering with the U.S. Postal Service for the 40th anniversary of the end of RPO service. This will be the first time in some 40 years that an actual RPO postmark will be used.

Cheers

Guys,

Can we please get a few more volunteers?

If you can only spare an hour or two, that's fine. I know that most have jobs, family, etc., but all of us enjoy this visual hobby and we do devote our time to it. I can only do a couple of hours of editing and that is it. If I had all the free time in the world, I would be doing this until my eyes fell out.

So, pick a thread that is not too large or it might be overwhelming at first. Or pick a thread that interests you and let us know.

Please take a look at this thread:

Cheers!

Hello everyone!
You know that feeling deep down in your head when you know you have forgotten something...? Well, today I realized why I've felt like that for a while. Had totally forgotten to "pay it forward".

A pay it forward gift has now been sent away. Plus a small gift from Sweden for all the others in this thread, as I made it go down for so long. Very sorry! Hope you'll like it.

Wrote "pay it forward" only on the real gift cover to make sure there are no misunderstandings. :)

A surprise yesterday in my post office box.
A letter sent by henrik_rrb and sealed with the stamp of 2017 where can see the access footbridge to the Katarina Elevator.
Next to the letter is a cover with Swedish stamps with bridges and also several stamps of bridges. A joy in receiving, separating and putting these stamps on the albums.

Henrik,
Thank you very much.

Just a reminder to the person that has received the last cover or postcard. Please update the thread, if you have not done so. Or, if you have not sent anything to one of the participants on the list, please do so.

Thank you!
