Russian F1 Grand Prix 2020: Guess winner, podium: PRIZES!

After what seems like a long hiatus for this lightning fast season, we are now in Sochi, for the Russian Grand Prix!

The official start time of the Russian Grand Prix will be Sunday, September 27, at 2.10 PM local time, which is 12.10 PM in London and 9.10 PM in Sydney. No guesses will be accepted after that time.

So pick up a(nother) glass of vodka (or whatever strikes your fancy), and let's play for another round! :D :D

First here are the rules. They are unchanged from last year's:

You need to be a Stampboards member - joining up is free -

Register here!

To qualify for winning a prize here, all you need to do after you join up is to make sure you contribute at least 5 (on topic) posts to philatelic threads, not including requests to receive freebies, before the start of the GP.

I will check your posts in the event you have a winning guess in order to verify this qualification.

If you did not quality for any reason, the prize will go to the next eligible post.

To participate, you must name five different drivers, in the order you believe they will be officially classified, from the winner, to the fifth finisher.

One guess per Stampboarder, and it cannot be changed once it has been made. Editing in the same post will also no longer be permitted.

You will get one point per driver who finishes in the same position as your guess, so a maximum of 5 points at each race.

- Prize 1: the winner is the person who gets the most points at that race. If there is a tie, the earlier guess wins.

- Prize 2: the winner is the person who gets the most points at the end of a three race sprint. In case of a tie, the earlier guess on the third race of the sprint wins.

The winner of Prize 2 then has a choice: he or she can go for the default Prize 2, which will always be a four margin penny black, or he or she can choose to accumulate more points to ‘purchase’ an alternative Prize 2. Once you have chosen to accumulate, there is no going back until you have 'bought' an alternative Prize 2. The accumulation can only go until the end of Season 2021, as this format will continue for the next two seasons.

The list of Prize 2's along with how many points you need to purchase them, is shown below.

Once you have won a 3 race sprint, if you do not elect to take the Penny Black on offer, you will continue to accumulate points for Prize 2 as long as you wish (but not past the end of Season 2021) in order to ‘purchase’ an alternative Prize 2.

You can do so at any time once you have accumulated enough points to ‘purchase’ the Prize 2 of your choosing.

Once you have chosen a Prize 2, whether the Penny Black or an alternative Prize, your Prize 2 points count will be reset to 0.

If you do not choose the penny black, it will be on offer for the next three race sprint.

This is designed so that anyone who wins a three race sprint will at some point be able to claim a Prize 2, whether a four margin penny black or an alternative Prize.

Everyone else will have their Prize 2 points reset to 0 to restart the three race sprint, except the Prize 2 points 'accumulators'.

There can be several Prize 2 points 'accumulators' at the same time, as long as they have not 'purchased' their Prize 2.

- Prize 3: the points are counted and accumulated in the same way: 1 point per correctly placed pilot at each race, but everyone gets to keep their Prize 3 points until the season's last race, where the highest point accumulator wins.

Prize 3 will be attributed on the occasion of the last Grand Prix of the 2020 season.

If there is a tie, the contest continues only among the Stampboarders with the highest score, until the tie is broken.

Anti-shadowing rule for Prize 3:

- This rule applies to the top three Prize 3 points accumulators at any race: the #1 accumulator will have to post their guess at least three hours before the official start of the race, the #2 accumulator two hours before the official start, and the #3 accumulator one hour. Everyone else has to put in their guess before the official start time of the Grand Prix.

- There will be zero tolerance for any time 'overshoot', even if it is one second, and any editing for all contestants, and no excuses accepted: my computer slowed down, Stampboards loaded too slowly, my cat stepped on my keyboard…so please note this carefully as I want to avoid any unpleasantness or ambiguities.

And here are the Prizes:

- Prize 1 comes from France and is offered here MH. It is an allegory of Labor and was issued in 1928 for the benefit of the Sinking Fund established as part of the recovery effort after WWI.

Owing to its high face value at the time (in particular its surtax), only 163,700 copies were sold to the public.

Designed by Albert Turin, it was engraved by Abel Mignon. What makes it remarkable is that it was France's first line-engraved stamp.

(I just realized this stamp - but not the same example of course - is also part of alternative Prize 2...but I guess that is fine. For the specialists, the stamp in Prize 2 is of the third state, and this one is of the first state. The states exist because although the print run was not large, the transfer roll wore quickly)

RussianGP2020p.jpg

- And here is the list of Prize 2's:

First, the Penny Black that will be attributed on October 23rd, on the occasion of the Portuguese Grand Prix, with the check letters SJ:

RussianGP2020_0001p.jpg

The first Alternative Prize 2, costing 10 Prize 2 points, is the iconic 'Pont du Gard', here in MH condition, issued by France in 1930, and engraved by Henri Cheffer:

The second Alternative Prize 2, costing 12 Prize 2 points, consists of two iconic Sinking Fund Stamps issued by France in 1928 and 1931 and engraved by Abel Mignon, both offered here in MH condition:

The third alternative Prize 2, costing 14 points, is a GB classic, the KEVII £1 green:

The fourth alternative Prize 2, costing 16 Prize 2 points, is the Cardinal Mercier set of Belgium, issued in 1932, also MH:

The fifth Alternative Prize 2, costing 18 Prize 2 points, is the Orval set of 1929, reissued in 1929 with a crown overprint, to commemorate the laying of the first stone towards the restoration of the Orval Abbey (offered MH here):

The sixth Alternative Prize 2, costing 18 Prize 2 points, is pretty exceptional: it consists of all the Buzin bird stamps, ie all formats, face values and of course all birds, issued over the past 30 years. There are 113 stamps and one Souvenir Sheet, all MNH of course:

The seventh Alternative Prize 2, costing 22 Prize 2 points, consists of the first 16 stamps of Belgium, including the three variants of the imperforate 'epaulettes' (framed double L watermak, L watermark and unwatermarked). All the imperforate stamps are four margin examples:

And Prize 3 for the 2020 season is an echo of the 2018 season, which offered a virtually complete run of the small format surface printed stamps. It's time therefore to offer the larger format, high values issued in the latter part of the Victorian reign and under Edward VII. All these stamps are sound (no creases, tears, bent perfs, etc...):

And now it's all up to you! :D

Cheers,

Joel.

Thanks as always for offering those lovely prizes and the fun little competition.

Not my favourite track or race, but it's good to have a GP this weekend. Sochi to me looks a cheap knockoff of the fantastic Turkish GP track, which I'm very much looking forward to in November.

I will guess

Hamilton
Bottas
Verstappen
Stroll
Albon.

Lewis Hamilton will keep pole position for Formula 1’s Russian Grand Prix after being cleared for a possible track limits infringement.

Hamilton, along with both Haas drivers and Williams' Nicholas Latifi, were all summoned before the stewards over an alleged failure to follow the recently-revised track limits rule at the Sochi Autodrom.

All four drivers had their respective lap times deleted for the infringement after accepting they were in the wrong, and the FIA stewards ultimately deemed no further action was necessary.

On Saturday morning, just hours before qualifying got underway, FIA F1 race director Micahel Masi issued new guidance to drivers regarding track limits at Turn 2.

Drivers were told: “each time any car fails to negotiate Turn 2 by using the track, and who passes to the left of, or has any part of the car over the first orange kerb element prior to the apex, or to the left of the orange apex sausage at Turn 2, must then re-join the track by driving around the array of blocks as indicated by the arrows before the re-joining the track at Turn 3.”

Replays of Hamilton’s incident showed that he failed to return to the track by driving between the blocks when he cut the corner in Q1.

The Briton also ran wide at the same corner in Q2 but on this occasion he did return to the track in the manner advised by the FIA.

Both times, Hamilton had lap times deleted for transgressing the track limits rules.

He went on to beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by half a second to claim the 96th pole of his F1 career.

However, stewards did warn all drivers that 5-second penalties would likely be applied to any driver who did likewise in the race.

"The Stewards remind all teams and drivers, that a failure to negotiate turn 2 as defined in the Event Notes during the race will likely lead to a 5 sec time penalty," the stewards added.

Yes but for last couple races, getting top 5 Grid positions was not much use to anyone.

Reminder THIS race start a couple hours BEFORE the last half dozen Europe races - in UNDER 4 hours from date code of this post.
