Actually, let's also have a round of applause for Stamp collector.

He's been participating on a number of threads, posting away like a champion,
and has now reached 530 posts since he joined (on 10 Oct 2019).

That already puts him at Rank 508 on the Stampboards honour roll.
(As an observation about rate of posting, members currently at ranks 507-501
all joined at least 4 years ago.)

Keep up the enthusiastic participation, Stamp collector. :!:

Well I'm a late starter, probably posted a dozen times in my first few years but as new interest (and time) emerged I have started posting a lot more (some I wish I hadn't).

So, prior to this post and, because numbers (I enjoy the link to many particular numbers) are such fun - my number was 463 (rather boring) 4 halved and added followed by halved - make of it what you will but I love numbers (especially 9).

9 x any number

add the digits together, if more than one digit add again, and so on until you get to one digit

= 9

Castores & RogerE

Did you know if you transpose number, the difference is always divisible by 9.

For example if you write 81 as 18 the difference is 63 - 9 x 7
321 as 123 the difference is 198 - 9 x 22
5253 as 2355 difference is 2898 - 9 x 322
5253 as 3552 difference is 1701 - 9 x 189

An old auditors trick for finding errors. :D

PS the trick is old not the auditor.

...
Thanks BigSaint, a nice note.

May I discuss? You probably know most of what I am about to mention,
but other Stampboarders might not.

Casting out nines

The procedure of adding up the digits of a "decimal" (base 10) number is called casting out nines.
Because 10 = 9 + 1, a two digit number like 48 can be expressed as
4x10 + 8 = 4x(9 + 1) + 8 = 4x9 + 4 + 8,
so if you cast out the nines (= delete the multiple of 9) you have 4 + 8, the sum of the digits of 48.
What is preserved by this process is the remainder after dividing by 9.
48 = 5x9 + 3, remainder 3. and 4 + 8 = 1x9 + 3, remainder 3. Both have remainder 3.
No surprise, since we have cast out 4x9, a multiple of 9. The advantage is that 4 + 8 is smaller,
giving an easier calculation.
Repeating the procedure for 4 + 8 = 12 shows 1 + 2 has the same remainder as 12 after dividing by 9.

The same happens for numbers with more than two digits.
This is because every power of 10 has remainder 1 when divided by 9.
For instance, 100 = 10x(9 + 1) = 10x9 + 10, so casting out nines shows that
100 and 10 leave the same remainder after dividing by 9.
Again, 1000 = 100x(9 + 1) = 100x9 + 100, so casting out nines shows that
1000 and 100 leave the same remainder after dividing by 9. And so on.
So every power of 10 leaves remainder 1 after dividing by 9.

Applying this to an example, let's find the remainder when the number 2345 is divided by 9.
"Hard way": long division shows us 2345 = 260x9 + 5, so the remainder is 5.
"Short way" (casting out nines): 2345 —> 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 14 —> 1 + 4 = 5., so the remainder is 5.
Explanation: 2345 = 2x1000 + 3x100 + 4x10 + 5
= 2x(9a + 1) + 3x(9b + 1) + 4x(9c + 1) + 5
= 2ax9 + 2 + 3bx9 + 3 + 4cx9 + 4 + 5
where a, b, c are numbers we could determine, but they don't matter, because they are
discarded when we cast out the nines, showing that 2345 and 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 have the same
remainder after dividing by 9.

Summary: Adding up the digits of a "decimal" number A yields a number B and these two
numbers have the same remainder after dividing by 9 . If A has at least two digits,
then B is smaller, so adding up the digits simplifies the calculation of the remainder, and
it replaces division by addition, an easier operation.
Special case: If the digits add up to a multiple of 9, the remainder after dividing by 9 is
clearly 0, so the original number is also divisible by 9.

Note: Let A and B be the numbers described in the Summary.
Since 9 is a multiple of 3, the numbers A and B also have the same remainder after dividing by 3 .
Special case: If the B is a multiple of 3, then the remainder after dividing B by 3
is 0, so the original number A is a multiple of 3.

The accountants' trick explained

If A is a "decimal" number, and A* is the number produced by reversing the order of the digits in A
then the sum of the digits in A and A* is the same, so they both have the same remainder after
dividing by 9. Therefore their difference A - A* is a multiple of 9, as is A* - A. Choose the difference
that is not negative, for simplicity. Now applying the sum of digits (casting out nines) method must
show that the remainder after dividing by 9 is 0.

Generalisation: If A is a "decimal" number, and A** is any number produced by scrambling the order of the
digits in A, then A - A** and A** - A must both be multiples of 9, To check, choose the difference
that is not negative, for simplicity. Now applying the sum of digits method will show that the remainder
after dividing by 9 is 0.

Footnote for the enthusiast

The casting out nines procedure works because "decimal" numbers have base 10, so the digits abbreviate
multiples of powers of 10. In a base b numerical system (b > 1), digits abbreviate multiples of powers of b.
Any power of the base b is always 1 greater than a multiple of b-1 (the largest digit in the notation). Hence
adding up the digits of s number is casting out multiples of b-1, so the original number and its digit sum
both have the same remainder after dividing by b-1. Everything discussed for b = 10 still holds for any b.

:D

RogerE

In my schooldays my last instruction in mathematics occurred in 1971 at the age of 16. Although I attended a short series of lectures at university entitled statistics for biologists, the above simply baffles me.

Whilst I can still remember a² = b² + c² - 2bc.Cos A (it came straight out of memory, no googling and no use by me since 1974), my mind simply glazes over after reading the first line of this.

I do admire both your and BigSaint's ability to even put this down on paper.

Kindest regards

Richard

P.S. Congratulations to all those passing with significant milestones!

An observation that Waffle's posting number is now 2129, tied with another member,
placing Waffle at Rank 193 on the Stampboards honour roll.
The next higher numbers of posts are now 2132 and 2134, so the next two hurdles
for Waffle are looming just ahead...

Congratulations to the birthday boy Puffin on bringing up 26,000 posts.

Interesting to note that if you divide 26,000 by 65 the result is 400 & if you divide 26,000 by 400 the result is 65. Furthermore if you multiply 400 by 65 the result is 26,000.

So what this means is that it all adds up to a great effort. :D

Hear, hear!

Also, it multiplies up to a confirmation of the commutative property of multiplication of integers. ;)
Let those who enjoy the beauty of numbers continue to find satisfying examples of that beauty, and
mention our observations in case others will also enjoy them...

Well noticed kuikka!

Since the Puffin has been averaging 28.41 posts per day since he joined Stampboards, it also means for many earlier years he neglected to make any posts at all, while he waited for the internet to be invented, and for Stampboards to reach 10 years of age.
(I waited even longer! ;) )

RogerE, thanks, I would've worked it out in half a megabyte if you'd given me a chance!
