Result for this terrific cover last night  !

I thought this necessitated a closer look:

Sydney Harbour Bridge set of four on cover postmarked Sydney Harbour Bridge 1 (APM #144) hand cancel on 20th March 1932, the second day of the opening of the Bridge.

Colleen Woolley, Oz Pictormarks, tells us the Sydney Harbour Bridge 1 (APM #144) was used at the Sydney GPO on Telegrams & covers missed by the machine cancels & attributes a price $500 to such covers. Perhaps the combo of the cancel & the 5/- Bridge quintuples the value. :)

Not a howling great buy for an Ozzie who pays 10% GST on it, so close to $A1,100 with insurance.

PLEASE add links folks in EVERY such case.

Which MOST importantly tells us the seller condition notes, which being eBay, are usually CONSERVATIVE to put things VERY mildly!!! -

Here are a couple more CTOs and a plate block pair of 2d (MUH).

It is certainly pretty rough paper that they used.

Difficult to make out the markings, but can I assume this is commercial use?

It certainly isn’t CTO :!:

Parcel post usage most likely being so poorly struck.

You might try adjusting you’re scanner as the colour should be like the images in posts above.

I was browsing through eBay listings of the oft mentioned one-stop-stamp-shop, and saw this cover, franked with the 5/- SHB, which is always elusive on cover:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/234156850309

one stop 5s cover.JPG

Interesting item, heavily toned around the stamps, except for a fresh looking 5/- Bridge.

The postmark is also blurry and indistinct, so it looks like the 5/- Bridge has been posthumously added.

The blurry scan has been taken direct from the listing.

105% forged.

A heavily bleached no gum 5/- Bridge has been added in recent years.

Please send this dope a note and report it to ebay, or some FakeBay Bunny will pay $1500 for it.

Low values are very plentiful on covers.

Well, despite telling One-stop the cover was a sham on 29/8, it's still happily up and running days later, with one day to go.

One Stop Stamp Shop Feedback
One Stop Stamp Shop Feedback

Mr One Stop Stamp Shop is no small fry, with almost 100,000 sales in the last 12 months. I doubt very much whether he would care if an item was dodgy or not, hence the we will look at it later responses.

The newbie seemed to be very keen to win, with 10 bids. Wonder whether he will like his purcahse or just soak the 5/- Bridge off

Well Mister ScamBay Newbie, here is a tip for you - the unused Bridges the fakers use to make these fictional covers are BADLY THINNED of course. Value $50 or so unless glued to a cover. Why add a sound $450 mint bridge to a cover, that gets $260.

He will learn to join stampboards hopefully. And steer well clear of one-stop-stamp-shop on Fakebay. :!: :!:

Not sure if this forged Bridge set cover has been shown here, posted the below on a different thread, but here it is for the record.

There is a well-known faked FDC - Arthur Gray's Bridge set.

Prestige Philately suggested this was the work of Georgie Gee (in the 1970s or 80s?). What was not addressed in the lot description was the mode of forgery (although they may have assumed that Gee did the engraving).

Did Gee obtain a legitimate Parramatta cds or did he engrave one?

(The date would not have to be moveable for the purpose of the exercise, so easier to create. Engraving a mock cds would be easy for him. Yet the auction description did not expressly state this, nor give mm differences between the genuine Parramatta cds and this example).

What made the cover suspicious was that it was over-franked but not registered.

Faked 1932 Sydney Harbour Bridge set FDC - ex Arthur Gray

Prestige Philately #207 Lot 450 Est: $500 realised: $1,900 + BP

Description: FIRST DAY COVER: 2d red (both), 3d blue & 5/- green - the complete set - tied to plain cover by 'PARRAMATTA/14MR32/NSW' cds being the First Day of Issue BW #148ya, all stamps are extremely well centred, a couple of very minor blemishes, Cat $6000. The ACSC states "Collectors should be aware of dangerous fakes". Voila!

About 15 years ago*, a small group of similar First Day Covers appeared in the market. Prior to that time, only three First Day Covers bearing all four stamps had been recorded, and concerns were expressed that the recent "find" was not kosher. After all, why pay 5/7d in postage and not at least register each cover. Eventually, the infamous Sydney forger George Gee Ma (aka Georgie Gee, and several other aliases) was unmasked as the perpetrator of the swindle. Arthur Gray acquired this cover after the forgeries had been exposed.

*circa year 2000.

Shown on page 6 of this thread by Glen.

I am sure I posted the front cover of a Gibbons catalogue somewhere on the Board where this cover was the star attraction.
