Railway Sub Office, which was a location which received mail direct from the railway without it going to the post town. The RSO may be many miles from the nearest railway line.
Before 1855 the Post Office accounting system dictated that head post offices (i.e. main post offices in post towns) exchanged mail with other head offices or with (railway) travelling post offices (TPOs). In that year the accounting system was changed so that a number of the smaller head offices were down graded to sub offices. These sub offices were able to exchange mail directly with TPOs without going through their own head offices and were known as railway sub offices (RSOs).

The first post office to become so designated was Braco in Perthshire which became an RSO on March 1st 1856. At first the term was applied only to offices directly on the route of a TPO. Latterly however the term was extended to include sub offices remote from a railhead which exchanged the bulk of their mail directly with a TPO. Oft quoted examples of RSOs not on a railway line are Stromness (Orkneys) and Sark (Channel Islands). Eventually the Post Office realised the absurdity of the name railway sub office for these far flung outposts and the title of RSO was discontinued as from June 30th 1905.

The Captain Tom Foundation's 100 Challenge is being promoted by Royal Mail on the latest slogan postmark which started in use yesterday.

Here's an example from Greenford/Windsor MC and another from Cornwall, although that is not really visible against the dark of the stamp.

Hooray, a visible/legible one. I've had several of these here, or images sent, over the last couple of days and can't justify adding any of them here! There's a different five-line layout from the other machines, but as Exeter has almost run out of ink again, they won't get to appear.

Very nice examples!

This is allegedly to be used in the UK from 26/4 (yesterday) to 3/5/21 and N.I. only (i.e. Belfast) 3rd to 29 May. But our Belfast one shown above is almost certainly 24th; it arrived on 26th.

Confusion on dates often arises because Royal Mail publicity often refers to the date when letters are expected to be delivered, rather than the date on the postmark.

The Post Early Vote Early slogan should have finished at the weekend and in Northern Ireland, where no elections are taking place, the Beyond 100 slogan is to run until the end of the month. However, something went wrong with the software (where have we heard that before?) and so this was received after the weekend:

Post Early to Vote Early slogan postmark wrongly used at the Northern Ireland Mail Centre although no elections were taking place there.

It certainly looks like it, and the book only lists one Charing Cross double circle Hoster cancellation. But it's hard to confirm the number of bars.

UK Pre-stamp Maltese Cross Date Stamps; meaning of Letters ?

Post by Alchemy68 »

Gents, i would like to pick your collective brains...

I picked these two wrappers up very recently, both to a firm of solicitors in Portsmouth and both with that red "maltese cross" date stamp.

Does anyone have any information on the use of these ? I imagine they should be quite common but searches just bring up the standard maltese cross cancels.

I am specifically interested in why the shapes are different and what the upper letters indicate; the VS stamp is from June 1835 while the C+ stamp is from July 1839.

Any help, or a steer to a reference, would be appreciated.

Alchemy68,

These are London Branch Office Stamps.

VS is Vere Street
C+ (cross) is Charing Cross.

Reference work would be Postmarks of England and Wales by James Mackay, which illustrates 17 examples, and cites earlier works by (a) Hendy and (b) Alcock and Holland

Following Team GB's successes at the Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo2020 Royal Mail will use this slogan - but I don't know when, nor for how long. (This is a dummy, of course.)

Royal Mail slogan congratulating GB athletes at Tokyo2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

I have no reference books to hand (I’m currently 3.5 miles from the place concerned!). It’s certainly a very clear example of what was probably a low usage postmark, so very collectible.

Easthope (all one word) is a tiny village now, but might have been more populated then if quarry workers lived there. Quarries on Wenlock Edge are now closed.

Thank you Norvic. I have misplaced my copy of Collect British Postmarks otherwise I would have checked in there too.

I don’t usually collect cut outs on cover but this one seems like an interesting item to keep.

Yes, it is a partial strike of a 10/30 in that book.

In Postmarks of England and Wales (James Mackay) its ref 1999

hoster_CX.jpg
Hoster Experimental Cancellation - Charing Cross

On which, Mackay notes ..... "Hoster machines were also tried out at the Charing Cross and Bedford Street branch offices. The Charing Cross machine was in use from 1885 to 1887 and its impression is elusive.

As for value, well, top dollar is reserved for clean full strikes

charing_cross_hoster_canc.jpg
Charing Cross Hoster Cancellation - with asking price of £550 (buy-it-now)

Your copy would obviously rate "a fraction of that", but its clearly identifiable, so "there's value in it".

Its a rare postmark!

Ahoj ViccyVFU,

Thank you for your further information.

By a strange coincidence I just sold it this week for 100 GBP, which I think was a fair price. Would you agree?

Cheers,

Honza

That is a good price. I sold a complete stationery with a nice strike about 2 years ago and it fetched £225.

Absolutely.

I'm not a stamp seller, so don't follow prices, but that seems very fair to both parties.

"A nice little earner" :D
Well done !
