Hi all, also added this to the Malta thread

I just bought this rather neat air mail letter card from Christmas 1942 with Help the Malta Relief Fund stamp tied by censor cancel and signed but I cannot make out the signature of the censor?

Thought I would share it as I thought this was a really nice item, any additional thoughts/info always appreciated :)

A 40 dirhams Dubai aerogramme (Jones DAL 18) was mailed from Dubai on ? JUN 1969 to Karachi, Pakistan:

The slogan is Arabic for "60th Anniversary of Dubai Postal Services", I think.

Back in 2017, I had asked about these in this thread and in the Malta Study Circle forum, and nobody who replied had seen a postally used example (despite the aerogrammes being common mint or CTO).

It was sent on 11 March 1971 from Birkirkara (a large town in central Malta), and it was postmarked on the same day in the capital Valletta, where the GPO was located at the time. It is addressed to Sahuarita, Arizona, and it has a short message inside relating to exchanging first day covers.

Although the sender and receiver both collected stamps, I still regard this as commercially used since it was sent in order to convey a message, not simply being sent for the sake of receiving the aerogramme. It is used in period, only two months after it was issued.

If any other members have similar postally used aerogrammes (either the 5d or 10d), I would be very interested to see scans/photos of them. :D
Congratulations, HalfpennyYellow,

never ever seen one in over 30 years of collecting aerogrammes. :D

Cheers

A similar aerogramme sent to Karachi, Pakistan is currently available on eBay. It is being sold by Pakistani seller bangbangkhan, with a starting bid of US $14.99: https://www.ebay.com/itm/203324112933

It is postmarked Birkirkara and it has some interesting censorship markings which seem to relate to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. I can't make out the month on the Maltese postmark due to the censorship tape, but it must be late 1971 since one of the Pakistani marks on the back is dated 7 January 1972.

Ahoj everyone!

Here is a Pakistan aerogramme from Lahore to the Netherlands from 1973 with a mixed franking of the decimal and pre-decimal currencies.

The plant indicium is 75 new paisa and there is an 8 anna adhesive map stamp alongside it.

Image

For how long were such mixed frankings tolerated?

Was the CAMP P.O. L-540 postmark from a military camp or some other type of settlement?

Cheers,

BUMP

Ahoj again!

With the passage of time is anyone able to answer my queries about the above aerogramme?

Cheers,

Honza

Sadly there appears to be a section missing from this one.

Hi,

I found a second Bahrain aerogramme that was uprated and used in error:
sb_july2131.jpg
According to T.E. Jones, the aerogramme rate was supposed to be reduced to 100 fils, but there was a misunderstanding by the post office staff and a 25 fils was added to uprate the aerogramme to 150 fils.

The Jones reference is from A Postal History of the Arabian Gulf Post Offices, Volume 4, Part 2, p. 16

The other example is at Bahrain aerogrammes.

Best wishes,
AndrewG

Hi,

A curious example of a 10R Iranian aerogramme, which was issued in 1972:

No idea about how the washed out blue colouring happened. The aerogramme may be a subtype of Wiegand 25.

Best wishes,

Two more Iranian aerogrammes:

The first commemorates the coronation of Shah Pahlavi. The 8 rials aerogramme was mailed from Teheran to London, England 20 January 1968, according to the writer.

The second one also commemorates the coronation of Shah Pahlavi. The 8 rials aerogramme was mailed by Express from Teheran to Buenos Aires, Argentina perhaps on 3 December 1967, according the writer. The 6 rials stamp paid the express fee and commemorated the 100th anniversary of the first Iranian (Persian) stamp in 1868.

Formula Aerogrammes are doing well at the moment. I had a couple of cheeky snipes on these two but was killed in the rush.
