Scan 75.jpeg
I found this interesting cancel amongst a huge pile of South Australia cancels. The PSSA handbooks list it as 'NS' (not seen). There is also a comment that the cancel was used on mail from 10th-16th October,1934 on the Royal Train which visited during that period. Does anyone have any extra information about it? What is the significance of the 29th November, 1934 date?

Cheers,
Mike

The cancellation was a generic one used on mail from the Royal Train during the Australian Tour in 1934.

Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester the third son of George V, visited for an extensive 67-day tour in 1934, (4 October – December), the main purpose being to open the centenary celebrations of Victoria on 18 October.

It is only designated a South Australian cancel when dated within the time period the Royal party was in the State.

A cancel from Nov 1934 dates from towards the end of the tour, after the party left SA. I hope this helps.

On 29th November 1934, the Royal Train was at Newcastle, thus technically a NSW cancel. See this lengthy and interesting thread, here: https://stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&p=6956983

Thank-you for that extensive backround information. As it is not a SA cancel it's going in my 'to be sold' pile.

Hi fellas, I found this in the current Phoenix Auctions (2158)

Here's the description :- Chinbingina: 'CHINBINGINA/3FE39/SOUTH-AUST' on piece. [Not previously recorded - From manufacturer's proof page]
TO 11/5/1926; closed 9/6/1951.

I am thinking this is recorded and is Type C6 and Rated 5R, am I correct ?

An unknown Rocky River F1 cancel?
An unknown Rocky River F1 cancel?

I found this cancel amongst a group of South Australia squared circle cancels for 'Rocky River'. I'm thinking now that this is not actually a squared circle postmark but an earlier, unseen F1 cancel.

Date is September 2nd 1882 (my guess) What do others think about this postmark?

Cheers,
Mike

There are arcs to the left through the perfs, not open in '82, probably 92. :(

Rocky River F1 cancel 1875?
Rocky River F1 cancel 1875?

You're never going to believe this! Tucked behind another copy of Rocky River squared circle, I found this candidate for the 'not seen' F1 cancel. Date may be 3rd September, 1875?

I believe this to be GPO Adelaide/ SA UF4a-2, the dot after the A in SA is visible

So we have a new Index (7 sideways) and a new LRD by 8 days (12/3/1863)

GPO Adelaide/ SA Index 7 & LRD 12/3/1863

Hi there all, not wishing to disrupt this focused thread - but as yet I have not been able to buy the SASG book (I collect very very widely so chip away at literature when I can).

Obviously there is the great squared circles thread, but for CDS cancels I don't know of anywhere to share. Some years ago I started this thread: https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=58699 but it did not seem to get any interest and I think I got too busy to continue adding to it at the time. Would it be useful to revive that old thread? I just like to add anything that contributes to our understanding and records eg EKDs and LKDs etc

Thanks

Lundy :)

Hi fella's, I'm having a bit of trouble with this postmark, the closest match seems to be in the ADELAIDE/S.A section but it doesn't exactly match any of the 5..

I estimate it to be 23mm, Index J and is an 1860's postmark, appreciate any help here..
Adelaide - Index J - 186?

I'm also having trouble allocating this one too, from what I've read in "South Australian Numeral Cancellations" by Campbell & Pearce it was allocated to North Adelaide, but it isn't mentioned in the book, only the Diamond Numeral #5..

So where do I find a home for it Neville ? Also the above question still remains unanswered..

Bunge, this thread on States Numeral Postmarks has an illustration that shows it as a type 4 for South Australia.

south australia numeral types.jpg

Numeral 5 in the list below the illustrations is given as North Adelaide R. Wallaroo.

That re-allocation looks to have been in 1861 according to the Phoenix Auctions reference site.

Maybe that helps decide based on the stamp / shade?

Muttly, with all respect to you, but the Numeral you are talking about is the Diamond Numeral #5 not the Circular Numeral #5..

I am armed with the correct books on this subject but need to know from Neville the author of the books from which this Thread is dedicated to answer the question, not to be given the runaround to another Thread which doesn't answer the question I have asked..

No worries Bunge - my suggestion was that it might help nail down which of those offices might have issued the type 4 (circular numeral) - will await the verdict from Neville.

CN 6 Redruth then GPO killer.
Adelaide - don't know :D . Still looking. There are lines top left D, E, bit lower down L and through A.
This looks like a part frame from a second strike. Too early for framed type. Probably new type.

CN 5 unallocated.
Wherever it was used it was a reasonably busy location - rated R.

NthA was based on DN5 being allocated there but we came to the conclusion that both CN & DN would have been there at the same time and that wouldn't happen.

Hi

I found this little beauty in a small collection! It`s a nice South Australia circular datestamp of Wandearah. The post office was open for four years only from 1878 to 1882. Can anyone help me with the date? It seems to be SE 5(?) 78(?)!
