Thanks for posting this Ian.

I see Southern & Central Africa is to be split into separate volumes again.

Yes, and although Denmark & Greenland are mentioned, Faeroes is not - they surely can't be putting Norway, Faeroes and Iceland together? We will find out: but splitting Scandinavia into (at least) 3 seems excessive. Facit manages with two: old and new.

Middle East moved to Q3...well gives me time to get NE Africa 2nd

Southern Balkans in 2019...hhmmmm guessing that covers Greece, Cyprus and ??? Maybe Turkey? Albania ? Bulgaria? Northern Balkans I will guess will be former Yugoslavia and Rumania. Then all SG needs is an Austria & Hungary catalog and E-Central Europe is done (minus the Baltic States, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova, though Moldova *could* be in N Balkans)

Agreed, would be odd to put Norway and Iceland together, never mind Faroes (I am gonna guess that will be in Denmark volume)

3 catalogs for Scandinavia...definitely a lot *but* I can see splitting them up. Classic-era collectors might collect all Scandinavia together (and Facit's Specialized Classic Scandinavia fits that interest perfectly) but with modern issues I will hazard to guess more collectors go one country rather than the whole region.

Though still think Sweden-Norway would have been a better fit, then could have had a Finland & Baltic States catalog, which would make sense historically since they were all under Russian rule or overlordship up to 1917 and were either reabsorbed into the USSR after WWII (Baltic States) or kept neutral and "friendly" (Finland).

But I'm sure Hugh Jeffries sees a logic in pairing Sweden and Finland instead.

Moldova is currently in the Russia catalogue which was manageable with 15+ 'countries' in when last produced/

This one is postponed from Autumn 2017 AND they've jacked the price up seven quid compared to last year's announcement, see this thread:

Ooh just noticed Spain & Colonies for Q1-2019. Considering how horribly expensive the EDIFIL catalogs are (80 Euros each and there are IIRC 7 volumes just to cover Spain and Colonies, not including specialized Civil War and other specialized area volumes) that one will be one for me to get.

But I'm sure Hugh Jeffries sees a logic in pairing Sweden and Finland instead.
Being a Finn I can say that this is likely how many Finnish collectors would prefer it for three reasons:

1) Finland was part of Swedish Empire for centuries, whereas the Russian connection may be viewed as 'short term mandatory occupation' compared to it. Even today this historical fact realizes in whatever happens with sports, commerce, legislation etc. the model is adapted from the west, not from the east. A good reminder of this are stamps: Finland and Sweden have had number of joint-issue even besides the pan-Nordic releases, whereas with Russia there's been just one joint-issue.

2) Finland is bi-lingual with Finnish & Swedish being the official languages.

3) and last but not least - a number of Finns do collect Sweden, but far fewer have collections covering Russia, Soviet Union or Baltic countries (and if Baltic countries are collected, then it usually limits to Estonia only). AFAIK the feeling is very much mutual (ie. Russians do not collect Finland, but many Swedes do).

Tucked away in the Catalogue Supplement in the April edition of Gibbons Stamp Monthly is news to bring a groan from all who collect or deal in modern definitives.

"Game of Thrones premium booklet.
The Machin pane and booklet will be listed in a later
Catalogue Supplement, because the machin (sic) set
is to be re-numbered for Great Britain Concise 2018
catalogue."

The next edition of the catalogue is expected in April/May, and will therefore be a must for any collectors of those stamps. I'll publish a conversion table in due course.

We've got some progress!

This month's (cover date April 2018) Gibbons Stamp Monthly carries an advert for the Denmark & Norway catalogue, previously listed in both the 2017 & 2018 schedules as Denmark & Greenland. It also includes Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland (leaving Sweden/Finland/Aland to be bundled together some time in the future)

Then today (well yesterday to be pedantic), SG have tweeted "The long-awaited new edition of the King George VI Commonwealth Stamp Catalogue has just launched."

So that's 2 "quarter 1" releases that have made it, squeaking in before the end of the quarter.

From an email:
The 2018 edition of the Stanley Gibbons Great Britain Concise Stamp Catalogue, due for publication in May this year, is probably the most important edition for several years.

This latest edition includes a number of important changes to the pricing and style of the catalogue. After taking into consideration all areas of stamp sales and trends around the world, the 2018 edition has undergone a thorough revision of prices.

Also, to make this edition more accessible to the majority of collectors around the world, we have taken the decision to not only publish the catalogue in a more desirable case-bound format but also to reduce its cover price to £24.95.

We feel these changes to the content, style and cost to what is an already popular title will result in significant increase in sales, both in the UK and overseas.

I was thrilled as I read the email, but you forgot the NEXT very important line in your quote above.........

"With this in mind, we have also had to review the discounting structure for Trade sales for this catalogue."

The small dealer is now shut out of distributing SG Concise catalogues and hopefully not all the rest of the publications as well. I know that this will be great news for many larger players who contribute to this board, but for the small dealer who was distributing a selection of SG catalogues to the local markets, it is now over.

The shipping cost of obtaining the SG GB Concise catalogues in quantities of less than 50 units will no longer be feasible. Sales of catalogues on the SG website and through the eBay store at full retail plus shipping must have been sufficient for them to determine the smaller wholesale orders were no longer valuable.

If this pricing structure expands to all of their publications, which I have not had clarification on as yet, then many markets will no longer see the catalogues physically available to pick up and look through before buying. The local collector who would frequent the regional stamp show and see the catalogue on a table may now be a thing of the past.

Reducing the cost on an annually produced catalogue makes perfect sense and going hard cover is great news, but at the expense of the distribution network???

Yes, SG South America 4th Edition was published in 2008 and SG Central America 3rd Edition in 2007.

The previous editions were in 1989 (19 years before) and 1984 (23 years before). :(

I hope we don't have to wait so long this time!

I'm sure each one will be split into at least two parts the next time they appear.

SG's definition of spring isn't the same as anyone else's: I wonder if they are migrating to the southern hemisphere? They have now announced the imminent (9 June) publication of the Germany catalogue:

£39.95 - 430 pages - ISBN 13: 978-1-911304-22-7

Commonwealth & Empire Catalogue 1840 -1970 2019 § – Due Wednesday 12th September 2018, the first day of Autumn Stampex. Retail price £89.95

Due to popular demand we are reprinting the Great Britain Specialised Volume 4 catalogues Part’s 1 & 2

R2820-18 QE Decimal Definitive Issues Part 1 [at] £34.95
R2821-10 QE Decimal Definitive Issues Part 2 [at] £34.95
¶ This new catalogue provides a comprehensive priced listing of the stamps of Iraq, Israel,
Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian Authority and Syria

Prices have been fully revised and new issues have been brought up to date.
Other areas of interest covered in this catalogue include Gaza, Egyptian Occupation of Gaza,
Indian UN Force in Gaza, Indian PO’s in Iraq, British Occupation of Iraq, Transjordan,
Palestine, French Occupation of Syria, Alaouites, Latakia, Rouad Island and Free French
Forces in the Levant.

§ IMPORTANT ADDITIONS TO THE 2019 EDITION:
 The comprehensive priced listing of Indian stamps used in the two main offices in Aden,
added last year, has now been supplemented by a summarized listing of adhesives known
used in the Aden sub-offices.
 A new and fully-priced listing of Indian stamps used in Kuwait.
 Several new plate flaws and watermark varieties have been added to Great Britain and
many Commonwealth territories.
 Further prices have been given for high face-value stamps with fiscal cancellations and a
start has been made (in India) in pricing telegraphically used stamps.

¶ This is odd because I have the 6th edition of Part 19 also called the Middle East Catalogue, which covers Aden, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Yemen. I can, just, understand splitting the Middle East in two, but not only have they split Kuwait from neighbouring Iraq, they have split off Egypt. Fair enough that it is probably included in Africa, but it would seem to make more sense to include it in both Africa and this new volume. I imagine the Egyptian Occupation of Gaza is also included with Egypt as well as in the new volume?

Today I received my "2019 Part 1", about 20 pages more than the 2017 (did not get the 2018). Had a scan of my areas of interest - mainly provinces before the Union of South Africa and into Union period, and there are not many price changes in the postage stamps. However there are nice changes to the Orange Free State postal revenues, Telegraph stamps (both OFS and Natal), Army telegraphs, Officials. Some varieties have had tweaks but not much more. I have spotted a couple decreases, not significant, but on the whole it seems catalogue prices have remained stable in my interest areas with increases in the above mentioned areas.
Also no changes that jump out in Cape triangles, Mafeking, Transvaal.

In the 2019 "Part 1" - super extensive price rises among Australia States, from SG 1 right into 20th Century, often up 10% to 30%, and selected tweaks in later Australia, Papua and NZ and Colonies etc.

For anyone who collectors this region NOT having this 2019 book is a Mug's Game.

R2871-18 Australia 11th 23-4 £32.95 2nd Quarter

Not sure where this one has ended up in the schedule - I'll ask Hugh for some input as to where it might end up in the 2018 issues.

The new Hong Kong catalogue is out, this was a 3rd Quarter item on the original list, released ahead of a couple of the 2nd Quarter books.

For those who collect only HK, it's a fine catalogue, and at £17.95 v. £49.95, a cost savings compared to getting the China volume just to use the HK part...but there are advantages to holding out for the China volume a bit later, it gives a big spread of Chinese areas, HK, Macau, Taiwan...

Glen,

I see that Gibbons recently released the 'Part 1' A-C, which includes updated Australia, Australian States etc.

My hunch - bet? - is that the Australia single volume will merely reproduce that stuff from the big catalogue, as seems to have been the case for several of the more recent editions.

No complaints from me - we get both Oz and GB in the Part 1 A-C, so quite a bonus.

Hi John,

If it is a question of shipping, I may be able to help. I have a weekly ocean consolidation program from London to Toronto. I could probably get you a good deal on the shipping if you were interested.

The standard 'Part 1', containing as always Counties A-Z in over 750 pages, was released in recent weeks, and my orders for it have been far stronger than usual, due to the VERY widespread price increases in Australia, Australia States, Territories and New Zealand - detailed review here -

A-C Volume 1 would be the very simplified 'Stamps of the World' orange volume. Pay £20 more and the Part 1 that Glen describes will be far more use at least up to 1970.

I have a Gibbons Simplified Commonwealth catalogue 2007, which covers the more modern issues not included in the Red Part 1 .

Is there a later edition of this catalogue since 2007?
It is handier for the modern commonwealth than the 6 vol SOW
whatever it is -------it's better than a poke in eye with a wet umbrella !

No: it is NOT the simplified listing.

I called it A-C but it's actually GB plus A-B to 1970. Bought the on line version for less than thirty dollars. Goes anywhere with no weight, been using them for years.

Can't see that on the SG website, and indeed haven't heard of anything like that in a very long time. The only online "catalogue" SG do is the "My Collection" thing, which I thought was a whole world thing.

Is there a year of publication shown?

It is NOT the "only on line Catalogue" SG do - these electronic versions have been available in this form since at least 2009, as has the Australia and States single edition which is just a direct lift from them.

I get access to it via the SG App on Apple (also available for Android). The year of the edition is clearly shown as 2019.

GB A-B (to 1970) edition 2019.

Clive, as pointed out by others, this is a very closely guarded secret at SG. :)

I am curious as to whether they really update prices, or use existing data. Their online "World" catalogues were always years behind with data over paper editions.

As a data point, can you advise what South Australia 1855 1d green SG #1 shows in the online Edition?

Clive, as pointed out by others, this is a very closely guarded secret at SG. :)
That does seem to be so.

It may say much about Gibbons' present management and marketing that so few people seem to be aware of this aspect of their catalogue publishing business.

To avoid any further confusion, the Stanley Gibbons Apple App will give access to a range of SG catalogues, current and past, in electronic form at what I think are bargain prices.

For example, the current 2019 1840-1970 GB plus A-B commonwealth - NOT the simplified listing - is available in an on-line version for less than thirty dollars.

Not saying it is a substitute for the printed catalogue, any more than an e-book is a substitute for the printed page, but if we're talking about convenience and value for money .....

Wherever you download the App - iPhone, iPad or whatever, you take the full catalogue with you. So easy to read on the bus or train, on an aeroplane, or in the car at traffic jams on Parramatta Road or the Southern Outlet.

Indispensable, in my view.

No, I don't work for SG, and have no shares or other interest in the firm.

I think this link will get you there, but if not just search for Stanley Gibbons on the Apple App store.

That is the SA price in the new 2019 SG Part 1 Clive so it is up to date as it was increased for this edition.

Yes usual appalling marketing telling almost no-one such products exist.

Given how tech incompetent SG have always been, are things such as apps able to be copied by some spiv who buys one then offers them on ebay etc? i.e. can they ensure they are 1 use products?

Glen, prices are listed in the 1840-1970 GB plus A-B as British pounds not Aussie dollars.

Can't answer that, being very much a tech incompetent myself, but if something can be fiddled and cheated eBay is a swindlers' heaven.

Clive - I take back what I said earlier that the "My Collection" thing was the only online catalogue and I apologise to you for implying you were wrong.

I went to the Google Play store to see if the app was also available for Android, but it isn't so I can't try it out for myself which is a shame as it sounded like a good idea.
