Hi Dave

I have sent a link to my Access database to your email.

If you want to see what you can take advantage of about 680 thousand records, feel free.
Any doubts I am available.

Hi Jose

I have the link and am looking at the moment.

Great work.

Unfortunately I am on a MAC but I can see some real potential there.

Intrigued by the set view.

I will contact you later in the year, maybe we can share some ideas.

Hi Dave,

Anything I can help with.

Records already include Mini-Sheets, Souvenir Sheets, Se-tenant, Gutter Pairs (some), Tete-beche (some), Sheets (some) and FDC (some).

Not all of them will be there, but of the first there are many (MS, SS, SE).

If you need catalogues (in PDF) I also have many - I can put them on the Google drive and provide a link.

José

Hi José

Happy new year.

I have opened your database and can see it is full of a lot of information, a lot of which I do not use in world collector but is still relevant to stamp collectors.

Having had time to sleep on it I think it may be an idea to have a single database in a format that we can both access for adding and amending records.

This way we can share data and still produce separate applications for stamp collectors.

This will open up many areas for discussion to reach a listing that can satisfy all collectors but I believe it is achievable.

By the way your link on the page appears to not be working.

Anything I can do to help?

Regards

Hi Dave,

About my website it's no longer available.

I no longer intend to make an application available. Your application is more than enough and free (which was why I tried to do the same).

I have also about 20 thousand items, from my collection, to register in my application and the time for that is short.

However, I will continue to update the database in Access and will make it available to you (with an indication of what has been updated).

Your idea would be excellent but, for personal reasons, you would not have time for that (see your email)

José Nascimento

Hi Andy,

No problem with the contact any and all are good.

Thank you for bearing with me, I am currently working on some rather large enhancements to the application.

Just checked and the stamps you mention are not in the database.

Unfortunately I do not have a catalogue of Bulgarian stamps.

To keep the consistency of the database for all users I have not included any code to allow users to add stamps.

The easiest way to get them added is to select Bulgaria not limited by dates in the database currently about 5500 stamps. Then use the Tools|Export Selection menu item.

This will export all the selected stamps as a CSV file into the Exports folder.

You can then open this with your spreadsheet programme, I recommend Openoffice or LibreOffice once opened add the stamps right at the end of the sheet ignore the catalogue number column for the moment, just leave it blank.

If you prefer I can produce an ODF spreadsheet and post a link to it here for you.

Have you added the SG numbers to the stamps in your copy of the database?

Once added to the spreadsheet contact me again and I will send you a link to upload the completed spreadsheet. Then I will import the data for all collectors. I am sure any who collect Bulgaria will be grateful. After the import I can post an updated database for you.

Always hungry for images as well if you have any they could also be uploaded.

Kind Regards

Dave

Hi Andy

Well that was quick thanks to one user.

I have been informed that the stamps you are looking for are in the database with one exception.

If you goto the search form and select Bulgaria as the country and then in the series box enter "1911 Definitives" then search you will find the colour changes. They have the wrong dates 14 February 1911 and not 7 November 1915 I have changed these dates and added the perforations for each.

The missing stamp is the 25st Black and Blue perf 14 x 14.

The series title 1911 Definitives is wrong and should read 1911-15 Definitives I am changing that as well as adding the missing stamp.

The updated database will be available shortly as time permits but due to Brexit I am having to re-organise my web site and then update the update application.

It is the way the base World Collector list is organised all stamps of the same design are listed together.

However if you collect using the Stanley Gibbons catalogue you can add those numbers.

Start as above with the search ensuring that World Collector is selected as the list to search.

When you have the stamps data displayed in the List Detail box in the middle at the top select the Stanley Gibbons list. Note that the number box is empty. Add the SG number here. I do not know the series title used by SG if different then change the series title to what SG use. Then click the UpDate button.

Do this for each of the stamps, my display shows a total of 17 stamps.

Separate to this you can add the date of issue in the detail box and click the save button in the detail box.

After adding/changing the data as above you can search for these using the SG number and country.

They will still be shown in the order specified by the world collector list but if you prefer to have them in the same order as SG this can also be done. I find it useful to have mine listed as per my catalogue so that when I produce the album pages for the stamps they are in the same order as my catalogue.

If you would like me to guide you through the sort routine let me know here.

Kind Regards

Hi Dave,

My DB has now about 720 000 records (it's in the link) - the last one, you have, had 670 000.
I'm inserting more.

Please see your email.

Hi Jose

Checked link I sent you it is working ok I have sent you an email with some detail.

My programme converts your DB directly and I am now working on extracting the data.

I am also looking at the way you handle a collectors personal collection with the intention of adding something similar to World Collector.

The set view is also interesting and I have some ideas.

To be very useful I think I need a lot more images, I have 100,000 approx at the moment. If anyone has any scanned images maybe they could upload them to the board where I can easily grab them, if that could be allowed?

Just to update everyone I am also working on an idea from another member on the format and usage of the collectable items, at the moment there is just the one field displayed this may grow to two.

Regards

Dave

None of these updates will impact anyone allready using the application.

Hi Andy,

First you are doing nothing wrong! Remember it is me that did not enter the correct dates in the first place.

Let's deal with the dates first.

Search for the stamps as before.

When stamp 1 of 17 is displayed you can see that it is King Asen Tower with a colour of Green and the date is 14 February 1911. This is correct.

Move to Stamp 2 Of 17 and the Colour changes to Slate-green but the date does not change. The date is wrong the colour change was introduced on 7 November 1915.

Use the mouse to highlight the 14 in the issue date and type 7 then highlight the whole of February and type in 11 then the same with the year 1911 and type in 1915. Then just to the right and down is a button labelled 'Save' click this, after a moment the 11 you typed in the month will change to November showing you that your corrections have been saved.

As you proceed through the selected stamps keep an eye on the Colour, I think the next colour change was the 5s value which was originally Black & Green and the new issue was Purple & Green. Change the date of the Purple & Green stamp as above.

You will not find the 25s stamp as that only had a perforation change not colour.

After this the dates should be correct.

Now the Series Titles.

This is a little more complicated to grasp.

A list on World Collector can be viewed as a catalogue. Just look at your catalogue and you can see it is a list of stamps. Now each catalogue gives each stamp a different number and value but also may list the stamps grouped into series in a different way with a different title. The final thing with a catalogue is that each one may list the stamps in a totally different order.

Have you added the SG numbers and series titles?

If so we only need to tell the database how to sort and display them for the SG list.

Let me know where you are after changing the dates and we can move on to adding the SG numbers and series and then on to sorting etc.

Kind Regards

Dave

Hi all, I'm new here.

I was searching for a versatile software that allows me to keep track of my collection and The World Collector Project comes out. It is exactly what I need and the fact that it's free and I can contribute to the database it's a cool idea so thank you Dave and community.

I'm writing here because I'm unable to download the application: I'm a MAC user and the corresponding link in the download page redirects me to a "missing file" screen on MediaFire.

I don't know if it is intentional, maybe because it's under developing or bug-fixing, I'm just reporting this issue here.
I hope to install and test it as soon as possible!

Regards, maggiolino.

Hi maggiolino

Welcome to StampBoards.

Sorry about the tardy reply. Been a little unwell of late.

World Collector for the MAC is being debugged at the moment and some new features planned.

I have also received a large amount of stamp data from other StampBoards members which I am trying to assimilate.

If you do not mind a Beta version of the application I can make one for the MAC and post a private link here?

Hi All,

Back at last though still rather weak.

A lot has happened.

First I have been given a massive amount of data for the database I am sifting through this now and adding what I can, this may take a little time. If anyone can help contact me by PM and we can move forward from there.

I have also received some suggestions for the application and wonder what other collectors feel about them.

1. Expand the functionality of the Format entry. At the present there is a single format field for such things as Single, mini sheet commemorative etc.

The proposal is to split this field into two sections the first 'Format' to hold a basic description of the item listed such as 'Single, Pair, Mini Sheet, Bock of four etc. the second 'Usage' to hold data such as Postage, Air mail, Official and a combination of any of the usage types.

I feel this is a brilliant suggestion as it does seem to clarify the idea of format and usage of the items.

2. Add a select/deselect all images when producing an album. At the moment each stamp selected for an album must be clicked to include the image in the album. The idea is to have a check box so when clicked all items will have the image selected for inclusion or all images will be selected for omission.

I have the code ready for this and it will be being tested soon.

3. Stockbook organiser. The idea is that you enter the stock book details such as number of pages, page width and number of pockets per page then the application produces a list with numbers similar to a catalogue listing, the number telling you in which stockbook, the page and the pocket in which to place each stamp.

The number would be of the form S01 (Stockbook number 01), P06 (Page number in the stockbook) and Pk12 (pocket number on the page, pockets numbered from the top)

The lists to be available in the normal stamp data display.

So when adding a new stamp you find it in the database then select the list for the stockbook and the number tells you where in your collection to place the stamp.

Please let me know your thoughts on each suggestion, if they receive good feedback I will include these in a future release. Together they require quite a lot of work to implement so if not required I will put them on the back burner.

Regards

They do say that the world is a global village and Stampboards just seems to have proved it.

I never expected to see another collector on this forum from Tomar, Portugal, which is where both my parents and my wife's parents come from. If Covid allows it, I plan to visit this old (12th century), lovely town later in the year.

Maybe "collectordave" should consider changing his avatar from Japanese cherry blossoms to one showing an olive tree, as the Tomar surrounds were once well known for their olive production :D

Hi Tomane1,

I would certainly consider changing my avatar but where I am is north of Tomar where cherries are the main thing even having their own festival each year.

Is there is a Portuguese stamp showing cherries?

Having my own olive trees I can say that Portuguese olive oil is just so much better than extra virgin olive oil available in the Uk and elsewhere.

Tomar is really worth a visit if coming to portugal.

Hi collector dave.
Hi all, from a collector from Corinth Greece.I have been collecting since 1971, Greece,New Zealand,Cyprus,Cook Islands,Britain.I have started making my own pages with AlbumEasy through and with WSC.It's a great application, and once you get a feel of it it can be very good and useful. The only thing in the WSC is that when you add the images it is very eye straining to add them by ticking each box, hopefully soon it will be updated with a box select all..I also can add images, dates on Greece as per PYLARINOS cat. Do any of you collect Greece?
I'm the only collector in the family[both sides Eng + Greek], and have never been given any collections. In my teens i was attracted by the sheer beauty of the stamp images and history. Apart from Stamp collecting i also am a vinyl collector of my favourite artist Connie Francis.I noticed that Malawi has a stamp on her...Such a country! Also Australia has issued a few too, but i think that they are cinderella's.Many thanks for listening.

There actually is a cherry stamp from Portugal - part of the "Fruits of Portugal" set issued in 2015.

I really enjoy going to Tomar. I don't know the newer part of the town but I have spent many happy hours wandering down the cobbled streets in the old town.

Tomar has also featured on some Portuguese stamps. First in the set celebrating the town's 800th anniversary and then the 1978 stamp showing the elaborate window in the Convent of Christ.

Hi rogrk_57,

Welcome to Stampboards.

I have just returned from a second bout of not very good health.

Adding images was mentioned before I had to rest and I have added a check box to add or remove all images on both the MAC and Windows versions.

I am just adding further selections some multiple stamps can be selected in the album list and with a right click menu, images can be added/removed to/from just that selection.

I just need to find time to recompile and update the website a task listed for when I have my next good day.

Have you added the cat numbers from the PYLARINOS catalogue?

As you are no doubt aware the WSC can mimic any catalogue so after entering the numbers you can sort them into the same order as that catalogue and then your searches can follow the catalogue you use.

If you have you can export the catalogue numbers etc and I can import them into WSC so they will always be available to other collectors.

Hi Tomane1,

Hope you like the new avatar? Thanks.

The new part of town is a little bland built on a grid, some good shops but not a place I wander around very often.

The old part of town is seeing some improvements the first is that there is now a cafe in the park on the River from where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a good view of the convent. I was there today after visiting my local collection shop.

The second great improvement is the old square in front of the court house, no longer a ploughed field to park your car but a completely refurbished and beautiful place.

The matchbox museum is worth a visit as well as the convent.

Glad you like the new avatar.

So now I have a problem. If the old square in front of the court house has been developed, just where do I park my car when I go to the market?

Maybe the matchbox museum only attracts fellow collectors. It was totally empty when I visited, but I really enjoyed the massive and well displayed collection. I have also been to the convent, but now, with the South African rand being so weak, it is very expensive to go inside.

Many years ago there used to be a stamp shop in Tomar. It was in the road that passes in front of the old cinema and the church square, but I think it closed down a while ago as I couldn't find it on my last visit.

Hi

The best place to park is under the sports ground. After parking it is just a short walk across to the market.

The convent is free entry on Sunday.

The only stamp shop I know is not really a stamp shop mostly coins.

From the church square looking at the church take the left hand street and it is just a short walk the shop is quite small on your left hand side. Big brass looking plaque on the wall next to the door.

If you reach the end of the street you will need to go back just a little way.

Thanks .Hope you recover soon. Pylarinos has a numbering system ordinary.so for the ordinary sets from 1861, will just be 1-1200.As for the Charity stamps which also is 1-... i could add CHS1 and for the airmail issues A.M1, and so on.
for variations the stamps are 4a [number followed by a small letter]
is that ok.
When is the app ready for the images?

Hi rogrk_57

The numbering system used by any catalogue is ok when each number is added on the main form.

To speed things a little are you exporting the data for Greece as a .CSV file?

If so enter the numbers in the cat number column and send me the whole csv file I will write a small import utility to take just the cat numbers.

I have just recompiled the .exe and is available on this link:-

worldstampcollector.net/Downloads/World%20Stamp%20Collector.zip

This is only the application programme no data so no use to anyone who has not already downloaded WSC.

Unless you are sure please wait for the update.

Another question I was going to ask about images, I was thinking of adding a poll to see what collectors would like just need to learn to set up polls on stampboards.

The images at the moment are full size as scanned which takes up a lot of hard drive space they are also organised into country folders which makes updating a bit of a pain.

As the images as used in WSC are thumbnails I can pack all images into the images database making it much easier for uploads etc but the full size images would no longer be available.

The images database would then reach, I estimate, a size of 4-5 Gbyte one heck of a download.

Any comments welcome.

Yes ,but at the moment i'm filling details to the Greece catalogue...When finished i will make a csv file and fill in the cat Pylarinos numbers. There's also a Greek VLASTOS cat numbers of which i don't have...
When the app is ready for a trial with the select all[images] i'd like to test it for you..when u are ready send me a eg
bye for now

Hi Dave,

what i would like to know is if i have to reformat or reinstall all programs on my computer will i lose all the information i have put into the database,i have quite a few counties done now but my computer man tells me that i may have to start fresh.
i have seen that some of your program installed on my computer is missing or not working as it should.
if you would find it better to email me direct i could send some screen shots of the files i have and see what you think.

If you have to reinstall your OS (operating system) then yes you will lose everything. If you have Windows and are able to access the file system, look for the "World Stamp Collector" folder in the Documents folder. This will contain all of the databases, images, lists, etc. that the program uses. Back up this folder and all its contents, then you will be able to restore it after the reinstall.

One caveat, wait until after you have reinstalled the World Stamp Collector program to restore the files as the install program will overwrite the database files. Do NOT use the link I posted above as that is just the application file not the install program. You can find the installation program at https://worldstampcollector.net/Downloads.html

Hi wartax1418 no worries any question here can only help other users and point out where I may have gone wrong.

Hi sotwuser, thanks for replying all help appreciated and welcome to StampBoards.

Now!

Backups the saviour of all computer users.

First a little word about World Collector.

Every scrap of data used by World Collector is copied to the 'World Stamp Collector' folder in your documents folder. There is none scattered all over the place. This includes the databases, reports, exports, images and albums.

So before you go any further, assuming your computer is still running to some degree find an external storage device (4Gb - 8Gb) then copy the whole folder to this device. This may take some time. After copying remove this device from your computer and place somewhere safe.

Just one word of caution. Do not use any compression such as zipping the folder, a normal straightforward copy is the easiest and best.

Remember to backup anything else you wish to keep as well such as photographs and documents from other applications you use.

Once this is safe you can then take steps to repair your computer, some windows versions allow you to repair the windows installation and make an attempt to keep your data intact. Does not work every time.

Once your computer is running again. Reinstall the application then insert your backup and copy the whole 'World Stamp Collector' folder on your backup to your Documents folder.

This is good advice for anyone using the world collector as the application is intended to be modified to match your collection and as such your copy is personal to you.

With all that said anyone who has copied tens of thousands of files will tell you it is a pain in the neck waiting for it to complete.

To combat this there was an old programme called XCopy which only copied the files that have changed or new files added. I have created an application so that it is available for windows and MAC, it reduces the time taken to backup to a minimum.

I am thinking that I should add a prompt when world collector is closed to remind the user to backup and if they wish to then run the backup automatically.

As always all thoughts welcome.

Kind Regards

Hi Roger

Downloaded and tried on my MAC.

Works well on a single image but I cannot get the batch processing working.

When selecting a folder I get an error that all the stamps in the folder are of an incorrect format however processing each one individually and manually saving works ok on all the images.

A good application which leaves the image squared and cropped very well.

Maybe the batch feature works on Windows?

Hi Dave,

Is everything ok with you and family ?

Did you use anything from my DB with about 720,000 records?
Last month I sent more information to your email. As you did not answer, I decided to use this means to contact you.

If you need anything else that is within my reach, do not hesitate.

Hi Jose

Sorry for not being in touch.

Been a little under the weather. Getting back to it now.

I found your sets idea interesting and have contacted Stampworld who have given me permission to use their website in the application.

As I add more links to the database I have a button on the form now so if highlighted it will show the current stamp in your web browser on the Stampworld site.

I have added Stampworld as a catalogue as well so if you find your stamp on Stampworld you can use their number to locate it in the database.

I have also tried running off an album to follow the Stampworld site list so I can have albums that follow their listing, easy to collect then.

Early days yet, I only have a few hundred links done so far.

I am still using the data you sent me there is so much it is a long process. I have included the Russian occupation of North Korea and am now up to another 5,500 records for North Korea itself just a few more years to go.

Going through my data I have found no entries at all for Senegal!

If you do not mind can you run off a spreadsheet of Senegal please?

I am moving forward towards release 10.7 and have closed down any new suggestions.

The ones I am including are the image selection for albums, the format and usage classes and the Stampworld links.

I have found that I can include the images in the database but it does make a large download about 4Gb at the moment would like to hear if collectors are happy with a download of that size?

Kind regards

Dave

GLAD YOU ARE OK. I am waiting for the app to download....with the upgrade you mentioned. It must be a tiring job for you too. As the warmer weather comes along I think will be more enjoyable. When i update it still shows 11 2 2020. and hardly any country has been updated this year. Thanks alot for the work.

Hi Dave,

I'm glad you're doing well. It has been a difficult time, but it will get better.
No longer using email on "[at] zohomail.eu"?
I sent 2 messages there and didn't get a reply, which is why I used the forum.

My DB in North Korea has now about 7800 records.
And in global it has about 826,000 records (more than 100,000 that the last I sent to you).
Can you go later to your email above. I will write more information there.

Hi Dave,

I tried to download World Stamp Collector on my Mac last night and the link isn't working.

The link takes you to MediaFire and says the following:

"The key you provided for file access was invalid. This is usually caused because the file is no longer stored on MediaFire. This occurs when the file is removed by the originating user or MediaFire."

Please can you restore the link?

And thank you so much for putting this project together.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott

I am in the middle of upgrading the application to version 10.7 as mentioned above. I am now testing to make sure the application works the same on Windows and Mac there are many silly little differences that can make a right mess.

I am also moving away from media fire to a full website. This will take a little time. As all files will be uploaded as is no zips etc as again each system handles them differently.

Please bear with me.

I can if you wish put together a simple download so you can get the hang of it but you will need to replace this when the new release is available.

Let me know if you wish to go this way?

Hi Scott

Here is a link:

https://worldstampcollector.net/Downloads/Archive.zip

When you download the zip it will unzip in your Downloads folder to a folder called Archive.

All it has are the bare bones applications and the databases.

Copy the databases to Documents/World Stamp Collector/Database/

Then run the main app should be no need to copy these to your applications folder at this time.

If you need the help files, Albums or Easyalbum files let me know.

Let me know if you have any problems. I will be online for a little while tonight then back on tomorrow morning.

Regards

When do you expect to have version 10.7 available for download to all?

I am considering a follow-up column about your database for a future Linn's column.

At one time I could download the program from SourceForge but I cannot find it there anymore. Do you expect to put it there again?

Hi Bill & All,

Release 10.7 is quite a big step from 10.6.

I am going through each piece slowly to find the quirks.

The addition of the image selection for albums highlights the differences between the two operating systems and is a pain but will be overcome.

Splitting the Format field is also no small feat.

Finally adding the links to the Stampworld catalogue has shown that the main screen among others has to be redesigned to cope with longer series titles etc.

The Stampworld links are proving quite intriguing first of course it means you can locate your stamp in the Stampworld catalogue then easily find it in the database then vice-versa you can locate stamps in the database and easily view the stamps on Stampworld.

There are also connotations for selling and buying stamps. Anyone using the programme can have their own catalogue which can be downloadable. So a seller can make their catalogue and when downloaded and matched to the collectors want list all the stamps that a seller is selling that are in the collectors want list can be selected with just a few clicks.

The choice is where to take this should the application produce an order form for that catalogue?

The combination of a free online stamp catalogue, a free database and free album definition software is, I feel to good to mess up so taking my time. Of course this means that to be fair I need to add a few thousand records to the database to test it completely.

The last consideration is the updates, at present the system works well most of the time but is subject to the vagaries of each computer. I am redefining the updates to work with standard files, no compression or other file groupings making my end of the updates easier, I will just have to synchronise folders on the web.

Over 100,000 images have now been uploaded with albums etc to follow.

My intention is to have version 10.7 (beta) available by end of June.

After which, hopefully it is a simple data entry job.

In the future, if all goes well, my intention is to have all the source code available on Sourceforge but not yet.

Hope this helps answer your question?

Hi rogrk_57,

Maybe you can help CollectorDave (CD) by updating the countries you collect - you now their issues better.

For example, at the moment, CD Cyprus DB, has 1211 records.

In my DB, in Cyprus, I have 1966 records that have not yet been processed - that's more than 755 records that you can help insert in Cyprus.

If you want to help, I can also send you Cyprus international catalogues, namely: Stanley Gibbons (general and specialized until 1940), Michel, Yvert (until 1940) and Scott (general and specialized until 1940). From them you will be able to add the varieties, errors and update the CD's DB.

If you are willing to help, send me an email and we will deal with the topic and I will help with whatever is needed.

CD is offering us an application but it can't do everything, alone. I think that with everything He's been doing, he shouldn't even sleep. His DB will now (I think) have between 450 to 500,000 records.

My DB now has about 900,000 records and I hope that within a month it will be over a million.

Regards
jlnstamps

Note:

CD will be angry with me for asking for this, but I think if we help everyone a little we will have an application with better information, more information and faster and we can avoid some work to CD.

Let's enjoy this gift from CD and hope that he can also enjoy it (I don't think he has had time, until now).

Thanks. I will gladly help with the countries I collect...GREECE, NEW ZEALAND, CYPRUS, COOK ISLANDS, BRITAIN. These are the main ones. Yes i have a Greek cat Pylarinos until 1980. They give specialized and dates. So Greece and Cyprus I will do. But I need specialized cat for Cyprus until <1960 [which I don't have] .
In fact cd asked me to do the Greek cat filling in dates and variations [I've already started].
What have you on Cook Islands? .

Hi rogrk_57,

I don't have specialised catalogues from that countries.
Only the 4 international catalogues, namely: Stanley Gibbons (general and specialized until 1940), Michel, Yvert (until 1940) and Scott (general and specialized until 1940). From them you will be able to add the varieties, errors and update the CD's DB.

Maybe someone on this topic can help?

Cook Islands I have about 2850 records in my DB, from 1882-2017.
Greece, about 3700 from 1861-2020.
Great Britain, about 8000 from 1840-2020.
New Zealand, about 4890 from 1855-2020.

This numbers aren't only stamps, they include mini and souvenir-sheets, booklets and some more.

Regards
