CD will be angry with me for asking for this, but I think if we help everyone a little we will have an application with better information, more information and faster and we can avoid some work to CD.

Let's enjoy this gift from CD and hope that he can also enjoy it (I don't think he has had time, until now).
Hi All

Never angry just grateful. Everything to do with World Collector can be discussed here on the forum ( I am not known for my communication skills etc) it is a good central space for all to see and read.

Maybe a little explanation of the data model I use is in order.

When I started designing the application I soon realised that a simple model just does not fit all collecting scenarios.

Many databases are around which have their own benefits but all appear to be simple listings based on certain catalogue publishers. Great until you need a different catalogue, also not all catalogues list all stamps.

So I looked at what, in general, a stamp collector needs. It all starts with a catalogue, then someway to note which stamps are in their collection and ends with something to store the stamps in. Seems easy at first, then I realised that every collector is different using a different catalogue requiring a different approach to identifying which stamps are in their collection and using different storage methods for their collection.

There is another consideration about collector preferences as well. Collectors can be divided into two groups, a simplified collector interested in collecting just a single example of each stamp ignoring all differences due to perforation, watermark and errors and the specialised collector who attempts to collect all variants of the same stamp. Of course these are not hard and fast as each collector may wish to collect just a few variants so there is almost infinite variation in what a collector collects.

I then realised that every collector would need the ability to build their own list that matches what they wish to collect.

What was needed was a unifying list which is where the World Collector list started. (I use list to refer to all catalogues as all a catalogue is is a list of stamps etc).

The world collector list attempts to list all stamps, the first part of the list ignores all variations and is just the stamp as issued on the first day of issue, the same stamp design issued later with a different watermark or perforation are secondary to this first stamp.

The database takes care of sorting these into other lists as the user requires. For example an SG catalogue is a list made up of selections from the base list with their own numbers, series titles and sort order. Once selected and entered the application can present the selected stamp data in the same order as the SG catalogue. The same is true of all other catalogues (lists).

The data in the database is fairly complete as a simple list of stamps issued prior to 1999, its biggest lack is stamps issued in 2000 to the present day.

I now have permission from Stampworld to reference their catalogue and I am slowly adding later stamps based on their listing, may I suggest that as a start anyone wishing to help could fill in a simple spreadsheet based on the Stampworld list for these later stamps. Contact me if interested in helping.

Kind Regards

CD

Hi,

Stampworld has many information that can not be correct.
Some (many in some countries especially in Africa) of the stamps that appear appear as singular issues (stamp by stamp) are not correct. Many are stamps issued, only, in Souvenir Sheet (SS) or Mini Sheet (MS) or in Booklet (BK).

My database already has the records of all countries (which still issue), until 2020 (over 1 million records). It has Stamps (regular or issued in SS, MS or BK - but can be identified), as well as FDC, maxi cards, postal cards, Sheet and other items. In some cases the dimension may be missing but this is also lacking in Stampworld.
You can use this information, then compare it with Stampworld.

As I told you I was working in some countries, in years that are not in your DB, including better information and images with some quality. Right now I'm with:

- Monaco: 1997 to 2021 with images - finished;
- Albania: 1964 to 1967, with images - finished, but I will continue until 2021;
- Spain: 2016 to 2018 with images - finished, but I will continue until 2021.

Please check your email.
I can make Monaco available now but I have nowhere to send it (3216 records and 1737 images).
I also don't want to be wasting time with countries that other people are entering.

Regards
José

Hi Jose

Having a rough time.My computer decoded to talk to me with lots of very fast ticks and a "Scrunch" which meant it had had enough and decided to stop working.

I have just purchased a new computer and am in the process of getting everything working again, luckily I have loads of backups.

It will take me some more time but I am getting there.

Have you recovered your system and data?

I've already put information on Mediafire but I see that the DB has not been updated.
Is there a problem in that data ?

The website to watch is the .net apparently after Breixt I am not allowed a .eu website so it may disappear without notice.

@jlnstamps

I have already download the Monaco data and I am adding to the database it will be in the later download when I can.

The Brexit does not matter in this case. There is nothing in the internet domain registration that says that you are not allowed an .eu website if you are outside the EU. As long as you pay, you will own that domain.

Suggestion: make the setup of both web sites in such a way that it points to one website. In that case you only have to maintain one site, which will be shown on both domains. Your ISP has either information about that or can help you to setup this.

I can only go by what my ISP tells me, and they say it will be cancelled after Brexit unless I register an address in the EU.

The action I have taken is to set up another website .net which I think is hosted in Alaska, cheaper than my UK ISP with more facilities. Once I have the upload and download stuff ready I will cancel the UK hosted .eu domain myself thereby paying for just one site.

I am new to your StampBoard thread; however, I have sought you out because I heard about your stamp database through a philatelic podcast.

I went to your website to install the Mac version of World Stamp Collector only to find that the install (DMG) is no longer available on MediaFire.

Is the link broke or have you removed the Mac version of your program?

I am very interested in using your Stamp Collector application and wonder if you can direct me to the new link?

Thanks in advance.

What I can do is to post a link to the raw .dmg file only for MAC users.

You will need to copy the application and the data files on to your hard drive but I can explain that.

No images included but if anyone wants images I can post links to zip files which can then be unzipped and installed for use.

If anyone interested let me know here and I will post the link. It will only be valid until I get the setup routines worked out.

Hi Collectordave,

As I mentioned in the last post, I posted, on Mediafire, Albania, information and images, between 1964 and 2021.
You should delete from Mediafire the 2 earlier Albanian files, between 1964 and 1972, as well as Spain 2016-2017 since I will soon make available Spain from 2016 to 2021.

Please see your email for more information.

Hi Collectordave,

About Mongolia it's a shame because I'm already in 1968 and with around 600 images collected.
This in the part that is already confirmed with the 4 international catalogues.
Overall I have about 4400 entries entered in my DB, in Mongolia, between 1924 and 2020.

My last email was sent on August 30th
I didn't receive your email.
I resent the email, Please see your spam.

Dear collectordave,

I'm newcomer here, but not in the philately of course. I'm very appreciating as a retired software engineer and more than half century stamp collector your giant and amazingly persistent efforts. I've read through already your discussions here since 2015 here until now. 155 pages in English (and I'm Hungarian) :)

Just installed the WSC on Win10 Enterprise and would like to better study how it works. Unfortunately I cannot really using it. The program starts normally, but I'm not able understand the details how it works because but without the all missing help files in the "Help" folder (it is empty after the installation). Could you share with me a ZIP with the help files someway, please? I'm present on gmail with the same name as here.

Dear collectordave,

Thank you for the zip of help files. I’ve extracted them into the Help folder and it works fine soon. Maybe it can be useful for you a report of my first day with your exciting creation.

I had some headaches caused by the special but very reasonable installation of the Windows System (I has a separate administrator for installation of programs and a limited user for normal work. Furthermore the storage is shared because of backup reasons between programs in a C: drive and working data in a D: drive. Also my folder ’Documents’ is not in the C: but in the D: of course. After solved some problems, I could discover some main features of WSC and also create for test an own pdf with a one-page album with own images in it at the end. It was really enough me for the first day and I’m satisfied :)

First experiences and hints

1. I found a bit inconvenience that the windows of the built-in help are not resizable because the print-screens in it are more wider than the with of the content-window. There is a also pdf version of Manual with name of ''World Stamp Collector.pdf in the 'Help' folder. It would be much better readable but it has a lack: there are no any bookmarks for navigation in it. I use it with added bookmarks in the PDF because it is very simple to create them. So, I discovered indeed that some topics by the built-in html-help are missing from this PDF version. For example: ’Export Selection’ ’Install Images’ ’Database Update’ are not present in the description of Tools int the PDF. And vice versa: the topic ’9.0 AlbumEasy’ is present in ’World Stamp Collector.pdf’ but unfortunately missing from built-in-help. The important parts of ‘’Use Selection For Album’ or ‘List Numbers’ are present only in built-in-help and they are missing from pdf.

2. I cannot do anything with the lists in my first day but I see the descriptions of this features are very different between built-in-help and pdf. Could be the World Stamp Collector.pdf out of date?

3. You can download the PDF version with my added bookmarks for navigation here: www.mafitt.hu/download/World_Stamp_Collector+.pdf. Maybe it has not too much meaning soon because of the following version 10.7 of WSC. However, it is in time to make consistent all help files before the release of this very much expected new version.

4. A new user meets with the program through the help-system first and the first impression is fundamental to win him. So only a very few work on the help files determinates the success of your huge efforts, as I mean.

5. For example, it is a bit confusing to see three times the same wrong text as „The World Collector Application” in the title (first row) of the ’Albums.html’ ’ Creating An Album.html’ and ’Use Selection For Album.html’ files instead of the related appropriate contents-text in the left window of the built in help (it is also in the file name). These title lines were me easily to correct in the original .html files, of course.

6. I wonder why are missing some essential pull down menu options in my v10.6 installation: ’Installing Images’ from ’Tools’ and „AlbumEasy” from the „Albums”. Maybe it is only a bug because this options would be really important me. Please let me know if this problem can solve because this would be the next steps me to learn the functionality of the application.

karszu

Re: Help With New Project? Stamp database.

Post by collectordave »

Hi karszu

May I make my excuses first?

I am just one person developing the software and as you have discovered it is not just a simple list of stamps it allows each collector to have their own list of stamps they collect.

Recently @jlnstamps has helped me enormously by providing a huge amount of stamp data.

As I added the data to the database it became very obvious that updating the database on a users machine was not as simple as it seems at first sight and it could lead to some user data being lost.

I also now have links to StampWorld to consider.

The AlbumEasy export is also added in version 10.7

These have forced me to completely redesign the database and the update system.

The new version will have a Setup/Update application separate to the main application. The update of the main database will also proceed without destroying user data (Quite important).

The installation checks the environment variables for the documents path, which is great for most desktop users but maybe I should include a small dialogue to ask the user to select and/or confirm where they want the World Collector data to be held?

1 & 2. I can look at making the help screens re-sizeable. The PDF lags behind as it is the last thing I do before releasing the application. Please follow the help files not the PDF at the moment.

3. Thank you for the PDF with the bookmarks I will download and see if I can do something similar when creating the manual.

4 & 5. Yes I know that but with so much work the help is near the end of development but all comments are welcomed.

6. These features have been reprogrammed for version 10.7 and as such will appear in that version. The install images will be part of the Setup/Update application.

If you need images for any country I can post a direct link to a zip file with the images which you can unzip to the correct folder. Just let me know which countries.

Best regards

Dear collectordave

I really understand your situation. I offer you a support in revising and/or translating to German and Hungarian the help files. Just send me a finished .html and I will check and send it back with corrections/suggestions. I see a possibility to set a Language in ‘World Stamp Collector.Prefs’. It would be fine if this Option would have effect to choose a language dependent help html. I’m sure this would be a first good step to involve more people into the the collaboration.

Some new experiences today:

1. The last item ‘View/Print’ in the dropdown menu of “Help” do nothing in my computer. Maybe it didn’t find the Documents/World Stamp Collector/Help/World Stamp Collector.pdf’ because of the spaces in the name of ‘World Stamp Collector’

2. The red exit icon at the end of the quick tools in all windows is not necessary and many times is really confusing. Standard tools exist for example in the right upper corner for closing a subscreen for example in ‘Albums’ -> ’Start’. The big red button in the left here is better confusing than helpful. The red icon also exits the main application - mostly unwanted - from the main window - without any question - however the standard closing tool is also present here in the right upper corner and the exit function is also possible from the main menu of the program. I miss this standard option from several sub-screens. It is a pity because it is a common user interface for closing windows and with them this great application can be in the following 10.7 version with less efforts much more user friendly.

3. I got stuck with learning the lists today. I could customise the selection of ‘List’ and it works really fine. But I couldn’t assign or add an item to a list and cannot find any hints in the Help pages how it is possible.

4. I’m afraid the Search doesn’t work in the built-in-help.

Hi

The multi language option will be for later however thanks for the offer I will take you up on that once the application is ready.

You can certainly help with the help files. If you wish I can add you to the list of alpha testers so you will get a link to download the alpha version when ready.

1. The View/Print is looking for the PDF manual I suspect it is missing as the application looks in the standard documents folder on the C: drive.

2. The windows standard closing tool is actually not available on all standard windows it depends on their function at times. I also have to consider that the application has to run the same on MACOS and Linux not just windows.

A further consideration is that not all users are completely au-fait with using a mouse and the standard methods of closing can sometimes be quite a small target.

You will notice that the toolbar is quite larger than the 'standard' windows tool bar for this very reason.

The close icon at the right side of the toolbar was 'standard' on windows when windows 286 was released many years ago, windows has changed the standard through the years.

3. Where you say customising the selection of lists , I assume that is adding and editing the main list titles etc.

Now to assign an item to a list you use the main form.

First search for a few items using the base World Collector List. When these are displayed on the main form select a different list in the drop down of List Detail section on the main form.

This may result in the Number, Mint, Used and Series text areas being blank. This is ready now for you to assign the current displayed item to the selected list. Just add the number etc. in the boxes and when happy click the update button.

After this that item is available on that list for searches etc. It is worth remembering here that a single item can appear in many lists.

As an example I have a simplified whole world collection as well as a KGVI collection and a small Europa collection that I have just started.

I have created lists for all three which means when I use the search facility and select the 'Simple World' list (Just my name for my simplified world collection) the stamp data is displayed in the same order as my actual collection and only the items I have assigned to that list are searched.

4. I have checked the Help search and it does work, I suspect it is your non standard Documents folder getting in the way. I am adding the code mentioned before to allow non standard data folders.

Re: first ecperiences

Post by karszu »

Dear collectordave,

I would like happy if you put me in the alpha tester list. I have many time and much mood to help this great project. Thank you for your latest explanations given. I have understood soon the difference between buttons “Update” and “Save” in the Main Form :).

1. May I suggest for the description in the ‘Main Form.html’ of online-help: the order of explanation would be better to follow not a developer logic but the order of areas of the form. Also for example, I mean that the functions of “List Area” are easier to understand directly after “The Toolbar” than after the “Stamp Image Area”. Looking first to the Main Form it is not trivial that it has more areas with different functions. The first has affect to the assigning images, the second to the Lists and the third to the World Collector list – they are very different and maybe they need a bit clearer explanation in the help.
I put some modified html into this file: www.mafitt.hu/download/Help.zip. It consists the changed sort order of the Main Form.html, some other minor changes for better appearance of wide images fitting them to the narrow window of the online help and an added printsreen to the Main Form for showing its Windows variant.

2. There is also a lack of explanation in the online help as I mean. It is not explained, that the chosen List in the ‘List detail’ box can be modified only by the “Update” and “Delete” buttons at the end of this area. However, the modifications were not saved without any warning when the user navigate to an another item without using the button “Update”. Maybe would be better comfortable give a warning this case for the user instead drop all his modifications mostly unwanted.

3. 3. In is area the two literals “Mint” and “Used” before the boxes would be better understandable as “Mint value” and “Used value” by my opinion. Maybe I was a bit silly but it became me clear only after beginning of creating my first own list :D

4. The two decimals of values are for some users maybe unnecessary and a bit disturbing. It can be customized for the different lists. A thousand separator is also missing here to recognise the big values better.

5. I begin to create own list for the standard Hungarian Stamp Catalog and I need some variants for the first step. May I create them and share with you some way? For example, the main number 00001. - of the 2k issued in 1871 - has 3 colour variant of lithograph print and two variant of engraved issue. In case the most common and cheapest variant would be 00001.0000 the No. 8 orange engraved. The next, 00001.0001 the orange lithographic, 00001.0002 the I. first lithographic trial print in chrome yellow. The shades of yellow would be 00001.0003 for engraved variant and 00001.0004 for the lithographic.
