Hi

Basically a little strange.

The policy I pursue is one of non interference with your computer so no modifying the registry no creation of desktop shortcuts and no start menu items.

So unless you create them they will not exist.

The only thing I can think of is that the .exe file has not been extracted. Windows seems to allow you to run applications from within compressed folders which can produce some weird results. You have a cluster of empty folders one should be 'Databases' check inside that folder you should have some .db files in there the others will be empty until you use them through the application.

You have the .zip file which is good, this needs to be uncompressed.

Create a folder on your hard drive, I call mine 'World Collector'. Copy world Collector.exe from the compressed folder to your new folder. Then run the application from there.

If you want a desktop icon right click on the .exe file and select create shortcut, this creates a small shortcut file in the same folder. You can then place the shortcut file onto your desktop.

Please let me know how you get on.

I will fire up my win 10 computer later and try it my self later today.

Kind Regards

Yes, that was exactly it: the executable hadn't been extracted. Ahhh, the wonders of Microsoft.

Thanks for the reply.

Good to hear it is working now.

I have tried three or four unzipping applications each gives different results, so after pulling out a little more hair I am writing a small setup application which will unzip all files into the correct place.

The application will be extracted to the users home directory keeping it visible to the user that downloads and installs it. (Not usable by guests).

Hi All

Setup app written not quite up to 400,000 items just yet and migrating help files as well.

The setup exe downloads and extracts the files you need into the correct places so no need for extracting files yourself.

If anyone wants to give it a try just leave a reply here and when I get back I will post the link to the setup file.

Please bear in mind I will be releasing it on the web site as soon as I get above 400,000 items and the help files are substantially done. So you will be testing the app.

Kind regards

Hi CollectorDave. Trying to get hold of you.

What is the best way to add a new country. eg: Chad.

Can seem to find an easy way to do it. Without destroying an existing country. I have SQL LITE.

Thanks CasMx.

Hi casmx

Be careful with sqlite.

The database is optimized for allowing multiple sorts none of which are in the Postage Stamp.db

To keep the DB consistent I have not programmed any tools to allow users to add new countries etc.

That said, thanks for pointing out that Chad is missing!

I will add Chad ASAP and upload an updated database.

I have also written a small help program so you can modify the country data and upload the modifications for me to add to the main database.

Once I have Chad in I will respond here.

Hi casmx

Chad added to main database will set uploads etc later today or tomorrow.

I have added the first few stamps to this as well.

The csv file can be downloaded here https://www.mediafire.com/file/kzddxkut350wtp0/Chad.csv/file

Just a few dos and don'ts

Do not be tempted to change the order of the entries.

Do not delete anything in the StampID or catalogue Number columns.

When adding stamps ignore these two columns do not enter any catalogue numbers as they will be lost.

After the file is imported you can add catalog numbers from your favourite catalog and sort them any way you wish.

Do add any new stamp data below the last entry using the column headers as a guide.

I am following the Stampworld catalogue for these entries to some extent.

After you have added a few more let me know here and I will post a link so you can upload the new Chad.CSV file for inclusion.

Note for all. If you notice any other country I have missed please let me know and I can get it included.

Kind regards

Hi All

Got a little sidetracked.

I have now added an AlbumEasy export function to the World Collector application.

When building an album you can now use it as it is or export to AlbumEasy format for further editing.

The file output is in the form of a folder which holds any images assigned as well as the AlbumEasy text file.

The text file itself has each page split with some white space to make editing easier.

Just waiting to see what collectors think of the new export so here is a link to one just done:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/oc1chp6hz6fzyd4/France.zip/file

If you use AlbumEasy unzip the file and it contains the txt file and images.

Please try it and let me know of any improvements that could be made.

Anyone with an Apple computer can also have the latest version now 10.3 just leave me message and I will send back a download link. Do not use the main web page.

The windows version will follow later.

World Collector now supports the export of AlbumEasy files.

My intention is to create an album for every country in the database, the first few are done and are available here. http://stampcollector.epizy.com/AlbumEasy.html

These should give anyone using AlbumEasy a good start.

Of course the albums stop where I run out of stamp sizes. If you can help and use an Apple mac I can export a small spreadsheet for the year and country you can help with and link to a small application so you can upload the edit spreadsheet.

The more size information I get the more complete the albums will become I will update the webpage when I add more pages and or albums.

Hi all,

As I am running through the database producing albums where I find myself short of size information stops some of them prematurely.

To help with this I have created a help page on the website, basically if you can help fill in some of the blanks I am creating a series of CSV files which you can download and then there is a link to upload them after adding the size data.

you can go directly to this page here. http://stampcollector.epizy.com/Helping.html

Thanks In Advance for anyone who helps.

Hello,

Apparently I have the same problem that was mentioned in your post 181.

I have Windows 10 home.

I downloaded the Windows version "WSC Setup (Win).exe" and ran it. It's show the form that appears on the website and I' ve checked the "Main Application", "Help Files" and "Database" and clicked on "OK".

It seems to be all right and at the end the message "New DB Installed - Run your collection filter to finish" appears.

I verify that the directory "World Stamp Collector" was created in the root of C: - and in the "Documents" of the user were created 2 directories - "World Stamp Collector" (within this, Database and Help) and WSCTemp.
None of these have any files.

It is true that when I click on your website to download, windows defender says that the file is unknown, ......
I allow the download and get the installation file.

What am I doing wrong? Can you help if you please?

Hi

You are doing nothing wrong.

The database folder should have 'Images.db',' Catalogues.db' and ' Postage Stamps.db' in them.

The Help folder should have quite a few .html files which are the help files for the application.

In the folder 'C:\World Stamp Collector' you will find the main application .EXE double click this and the application will start. This will create more folders in the documents section.

I have just tried it again on my PC and had no problems.

After starting the Setup application select the main application, database etc then click ok.

You should see a progress bar and some text above it which tells you what is being downloaded.

After the download the text changes to show it is being installed.

Do you get these?

Kind Regards

This problem sounds like a virus scanner quarantaining the software or just allowing the software to be downloaded and run once, but not install properly. I've seen that happen before. At work for example I can download executables but when I try to run it I have to give every time permission to run it because the virus scanner detects it.

Test it without the virus scanner active when you trust the software and are not connected to the internet. Preferably even on a separate system that can be re-installed whenever needed. Depending on the virus scanner brand they also have a solution to send in the executable for checking it against viruses and add it to the 'safe' executable list in the virus definitions.

Hi CD,

In order to help I tried to download the file from Albania and I am directed to MediaFire with a message:

Something appears to be missing .....

Apparently the file was removed, although a download button appears that takes me to a page that is blocked by my Bitdefender software.

Hello,

Again, I'm sorry for being so boring.

The export function does not work, with me. Something failed me, although I followed what is in the help.

Selected Search, chose the criteria, in this case it was a country and confirmed.

After that, selected Tools and Export Selection and nothing was created in the export folder.

Hi

Never boring!

It is always good to find out what is happening, usually it is something I have missed or not explained properly.

I do not understand the download Albania file?

All downloads are done through the setup application and no Albania file exists there.

Are you trying to download the images?

If so start the setup app again and choose the Images A check box then clicl Ok this will download all the images for countries beginning with 'A'.

I am working on my MAC at the moment so cannot check on windows for the export.

Just one thing though when you select the country and confirm is any stamp data displayed. You can check at the bottom of the main screen where it will tell you it is displaying stamp 1 of ????.

If this is No stamps selected then there is nothing to export.

Have you run the collection filter.

Go to Stamps|options|Collection filter and select the countries you collect and the formats then click the tick which will setup the database for your use.

I will setup my windows computer later and check then get back to you.

Kind Regards

Hello CD,

About Albania file, I was referring to the link on your "helping page" page.

As for export, the answer is yes:
In the Collection Filter is selected: Specialist, all the includes and all countries are on the right list box.

I didn't understand when you refer "then click the tick which will setup the database for your use".
It is the green button ?
If so, I've clicked on it.

Hi

Just tried On the MAC, windows 64 bit and earlier win32 bit and all work, so a little baffled that you cannot get it to work.

After you get that screen you select Tools|Export Selection from the main window you are then prompted to enter a filename/title for the export then after clicking Ok on that form the export happens.

The only strange thing I notice is that the form asking for the export name is placed in the top left corner of my screen on windows. which I will have a look at.

The trouble could be permissions again.

You changed permissions for the initial setup and you have to change the permissions\AV for the main application as well.

It is two applications not just one.

Hi,

It is precisely what you said.
I gave permissions to the application's executable and the export problem was solved.

Now, as you know, as I have my BD and I am updating it, I have little time to help and I would very much like to do it. The other day I sent an excel with Portugal until 2019, if I'm not mistaken. Were you able to get anything ?

What I can do is, as I finish each country/area, I can send what I have.
I usually don't just include stamps but also other items - Fdc, souvenir sheets, mini-sheets, maxi cards, postal cards and others. And I also include varieties (colour differences, errors, etc.).

As for the images, on my website, there are those corresponding to the country/areas that I have finished.

Thanks again for your precious help.

Good nice to know you have it working.

I have most data for Portugal in the database and will eventually be using the semi specialist catalogue from Afinsa to add errors etc so some good information was good but of course the exports are different.

My biggest headache is stamp size information.

The easiest way to help with this is to add size information to your copy width and height then export the country or your selection and sand the exported file to me I can the read that in directly ready for the next database update on the web.

Images are also a problem but the easy way to help here is to assign the images to the stamp data then zip the country folder in the images folder and send that to me. If the file is to large to email then I can give you a URL to upload the file to.

I am adding Mini Sheets (in the database these are treated the same as souvenir sheets).

Just completed win32, win64 and mac setup applications to make it easier to do the basic setup. These also check the permissions etc before attempting to copy and warn you when you need to grant permission. So thanks for trying the app and pointing that out.

These are not on general release as yet but if anyone on the forum wishes to test any of the versions leave me a message or email through the forum and I will send a link for the version you can test.

Regards

Hi !
So I came across your software through one of the links... While install was not that problematic (I am Linux user, but I used Windows version through Wine interface, and it seems to work good), usage was. Interface is not intuitive enough not to have any documentation...

Until I found this forum, I actually couldn't get to functionality I needed (trick with Magnifier is not documented)... So adding small "How to" page with instruction on how to use your software would be very needed.

When I was reading this forum, I have seen that you are trying to satisfy users of all OSes (I have seen some talk about Linux, Mac and of course Windows). Questions that comes to my mind is, why didn't you use Java instead of "Basic" (sorry I didn't get the full name of it). Java would work natively on any platform, without changing one line of code.

I would recommend that you go full open-source, that way you might get some people willing to help you with your software. If you interested going Java, send me PM.

Even if you don't go opensource, you should create (empty) repo on github, because people could report problems there, plus you can host homepage there, add documentation and lot of other stuff...

So this ends my ideas...

There is one problem I have, after I select my country and do "Albums -> Use Selection" and generate list, it creates empty list without images (there are place holders there for images, but there are no images). Is that intended that way? Looking at my collection (I am looking at Ireland), it has 1437 (missing 1200), and I think about 1100 pictures, so I would expect Albums -> View/Print to show at least some pictures?

Kind regards,
Andy

Hi Andy

Good to know it works on Linux using wine.

It sounds like you do not have the help pages installed? The magnifier is documented in them.

Albums-> use selection creates the empty list as you say. The placeholders you refer to are the small checkboxes on the left of the list. The application makes no guesses as to which images you wish to have included so leaves these unchecked.

To include an image simply put a check mark in the box of the stamp you want the image for, then when you create the album the image will be placed in the stamp box. You can of course included as many or as few as you wish.

You cannot include images of countries or series just stamps.

The view print option is just a shortcut after you have created the album, basically your systems PDF viewer.

After creating the album in the album designer portion, including whatever images you wish these are added to the PDF file.

In the album creation portion you will also find an AlbumEasy menu option. This will export your album in the albumEasy format where you can further edit your album to suit your needs. Where you have included images in the main album these are exported to the AlbumEasy album as well.

As you say the data on Ireland is a little short and stops at the year 2002. I will add this data as and when I can but if anyone can help to add the data it will go faster.

The language I use is PureBasic which works on all three main operating systems and when using I do not have to change any lines of code. There are a few quirks in each operating system though which all languages have to get over.

Linux itself changed earlier this year with the graphical interface making choices for the programmer e.g. what size a control, such as a combination list, should be in effect making a mess of applications written for earlier version of Linux. Although I found a workaround I decided it best to drop development of the Linux version as who knows what other improvements will be made in the future.

Let me know if you have the help files and if not I can post a link to a zip file.

Kind Regards

Hi !

Yes it works quite good. With your instructions I managed to create Album with pictures. And data till 1996 seems ok, but afterwards not (and like you said it stops at 2002).

If you need help with Ireland part send me PM, I would be willing to help and get Irish catalog up to date. I am very new collector so scanning my stamps won't be possible, since I don't have that many yet... Would that be an issue?

Only problem I have with software is Catalogs. When I enter those dialogs, I can't exit them anymore (Done button doesn't do anything). Is catalog (List) functionality even present? Adding catalog numbers to Albums would also be a plus.

One question about Albums... When album is generated, is there a way to put description of the stamp under the stamp?

After looking again at Help I found correct data there, but this "tips" on how to start, should be highlighted separately I think...

Thanks for good application, I would be willing to help with development but I am Java developer with 0 knowledge of PureBasic. If you need help with Ireland database I could try help there... So just send me PM...

Hi !

Help getting Ireland up to date would be very much appreciated. I will send pm.

You mention a problem with catalogues. Maybe an old version you are running. Can you let me know the version number. Help|About will tell you.

Catalogues are the heart of the World Collector Application They are now referred to as Lists.

I started this as I wanted a list that matched the way I collect so you can create new lists yourself and add catalogue numbers etc and then sort them as you wish. They can then be used to access the data which is then presented in the order defined by yourself.

Albums! the World Collector produces very simple albums, adding catalogue numbers etc can violate some copyrights and so it is avoided.

The easiest way I have found is to use AlbumEasy another free programme available on the internet which is very capable.

Once you produce your basic album in World Collector you can export that as an AlbumEasy album (with Images) after this many options are open to you you can add descriptions catalogue numbers and more to the album.

As with all album page creation it is the stamp size information that is needed the World Collector keeps hold of all that after it is entered making it easier for all collectors.

Kind Regards
