Artemis (Roman: Diana), goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the Moon, and chastity, is renowned for her great love of women. She roamed the forests and mountains with a band of young virgins, one of whom was a nymph named Callisto. Zeus, lusting for Callisto, disguised himself as Artemis and forced himself upon her. When her pregnancy was discovered, Callisto was expelled from Artemis’ group. Based on a painting by François Boucher, the seduction of Callisto by Zeus was depicted on this stamp issued on 8 October 2020.

Great story and thanks for sharing!!! The following two paintings portray the moment when Callisto’s pregnancy is discovered:

Stamp from Sweden 350 Years since Westphalian Peace Queen Christina 19 March 1998 LGBTQ
Christina (1626-1689) became Queen of Sweden at the age of almost six. She is remembered as one of the most learned women of the 17th century. Before her father died in the Thirty Years’ War, he secured that Christina should receive an education of the type normally afforded only to boys. Her closest female friend was Ebba Sparre, with whom she shared a bed. In 1645, she founded Ordinari Post Tijdender, the oldest currently published newspaper in the world. In 1649, Christina announced that she had decided not to marry. In 1654, she abdicated her throne, probably because she planned to become Roman Catholic and because she had become unpopular. She left the country dressed in men’s clothes, eventually settling in Rome. She wrote passionate letters to Ebba Sparre, and while visiting Paris, ladies were shocked by her masculine appearance and demeanor. Near the end of her life, she wrote that she was “neither Male nor Hermaphrodite, as some People in the world have pass’d me for.” Christina appeared on this stamp issued on 19 March 1998 commemorating the 350th anniversary of the Westphalian Peace.

In Greek mythology, Hyacinth was a very beautiful Spartan prince and lover of the god Apollo. Hyacinth was also admired by the God of the West wind Zephyrus, the God of the North wind Boreas and a mortal man named Thamyris. But Hyacinth chose Apollo over the others. With Apollo, Hyacinth visited all of Apollo's sacred lands in the chariot drawn by swans. Apollo taught his lover the use of the bow, of music and the lyre, the art of prophecy, and exercises in the gymnasium.

Hyacinth, sculpture by Baron François Joseph Bosio (1768 – 1845), designed by Pierre Gandon, engraved by Charles Mazelin and issued by Monaco on July 12, 1948:

Monaco 1948 Bosio 4.jpg

Monaco 1948 Bosio 8.jpg

One day, Apollo was teaching him the game of quoit. They decided to have a friendly competition by taking turns to throw the discus. Apollo threw first, with such a strength that the discus slit the clouds in the sky. Hyacinth ran behind it to catch it and impress Apollo. But as the discus hit the ground, it bounced back, hitting Hyacinth's head and wounding him fatally. Alternatively, in a second myth, Zephyrus is held responsible for the death of Hyacinth; jealous that Hyacinth preferred the radiant Apollo, Zephyrus blew Apollo's quoit boisterously off course to kill Hyacinth.

Zephyrus, god of West wind, stone engraving from the Tower of the Winds in Athenes, issued by Greece on August 15, 1942:

Greece 1942 Winds 6.jpg

Apollo promised that he would always remember Hyacinth in his songs and the music of his lyre. From Hyacinth's spilled blood, he created a flower, the hyacinth. It was considered by the Greeks to be the most beautiful of all flowers.

Water Hyacinth, issued by Cambodia on August 17, 1970:

Stamp from Armenia Sergei Parajanov 75th Anniversary of Birth 19 April 1999 LGBTQ

Sergei Parajanov (1924-1990) was a Soviet film director who made significant contributions to Soviet cinematography, using a style totally out of step with socialist realism, through Ukrainian, Georgian, and Armenian cinema. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, to Armenian parents, he enrolled in Moscow’s VGIK, one of the oldest and highly respected film schools in Europe. In 1948, he was arrested for homosexual acts with an MGB officer and sentenced to five years, but he was released after three months. He made his first professional film in 1954. He created Sayat Nova in 1969 (re-edited as The Color of Pomegranates). The Soviet film administration sabotaged or banned his projects and plans until he was finally arrested in 1973 (again charged with homosexuality) and imprisoned until 1977. He was able to return to film creation in the late 1980s. Sergei appeared on this souvenir sheet released on 19 April 1999 commemorating the 75th anniversary of his birth.

What a montage of interesting stamps and backgrounds. :)

And amazing the very first LGBTQ stamp was issued only 20 years or so back.

jps55liquefy posts are an object lesson in how to caption images perfectly, and he used the word STAMP each time so google pics up in that - an essential thing for indexing that 95% of members simply do not get sadly as it SEEMS pointless on a STAMP board, but google 'spiders' cannot see they are stamps.

Here is one not shown above as far as I know -

Oscar Wilde

Ireland, 2000 stamp issue

Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854-1900) is best known for his wit and flamboyance, and his literary efforts, with his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and the play The Importance of Being Ernest his most lasting legacies. His criminal conviction for “gross indecency” and subsequent imprisonment led to his early death at age 46 in France, where he was buried. (Click on images to see more Oscar Wilde stamps)

The Death Centenary of Oscar Wilde was the first of Ireland's commemorative stamp issues to depict both decimal and euro currency values. The issue was part of a programme to introduce the euro as the new national currency. The full changeover did not take place until 1st January 2002.

Stamp from Greece EUROPA Famous Women Sappho 22 April 1996 LGBTQ

Sappho (c. 630 – c. 570 BC) was an Archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos, known for her lyric poetry written to be sung to the accompaniment of a lyre. In ancient times, she was widely regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets. Only about 650 of her approximately 10,000 lines of poetry exist today. Only one poem, “Ode to Aphrodite,” survives complete. Sappho 31 (fragment 31) describes her love for a young woman. She is well known as a symbol of love and desire between women, with the English words sapphic and lesbian derived from her name and the name of her home island. She is depicted on this EUROPA stamp released on 22 April 1996 celebrating Famous Women.
