An interesting thought, if Germany has a zero alcohol policy for drivers and if the gum had had beer in it, then potentially you'd leave yourself open to a driving ban if you used one of those stamps and drove.

That is impossible as he looks happy and is smiling! As far as I know. lesbootman, there is no legal limit for blood alcohol limit, walking through Rhine/Main/Danube towns, back to a canal ship, after a beer and sausage fueled lunch, thank goodness. We had a few on the riverbank, watching the passing flotilla. Even the Riesling was superb. I did need a little support up the gangplank.

It is astonishing how many stamps, at the local post office, that you can be persuaded to buy, after such an enjoyable lunch. In the good old days, on ocean cruises, the local post people came on board to display their wares. On land, one had to find a post office with a philatelic section, of which there were many throughout Germany, Austria and Hungary.

Don't know if we will pass this on our cruse but a postcard I happen to have (for the stamp- not the picture!):

Deutsches Eck.jpg
"Deutsches Eck: ("German Corner") is the name of a headland in Koblenz, Germany, where the Mosel river joins the Rhine. Named after a local commandry of the Teutonic Order (Deutscher Orden), it became known for a monumental equestrian statue of William I, first German Emperor, erected in 1897 in appreciation for his role in the unification of Germany. One of many Emperor William monuments raised in the Prussian Rhine Province, it was destroyed in World War II and only the plinth was preserved as a memorial. Following German reunification, a replica of the statue was erected on the pedestal after controversial discussions in 1993. It is today a Koblenz landmark and a popular tourist destination."
Wikipedia

Although the card was posted in 1949 this must be a pre-war view.

If going down the Rhine, you almost certainly will pass it. On our 2016 trip we stopped in Koblenz and we walked to the plinth to take photos. A rather imposing monument and I am not surprised it did not survive the end of WW2, being of the supreme Warlord.

That is the end of the German stamps collected during the Rhine/Main/Danube cruise and visit to the Baltic port of Warnemunde/Rostock. The Rhine villages were fantastic to visit and charmingly old fashioned. Next comes the Netherlands. I had intended to post the map of the trip after Amsterdam but now seems as good a time to start as any.
