Is there the name + address of the sender on the back? I feel this adds a little something extra to these military concession rate covers.

HMAS Penguin is a 'stone frigate' (i.e. naval shore establishment) here in Sydney - little danger of shipwreck or seasickness.

Hello Temora22 ,

I should have checked with wikipedia first. Thanks for letting me know.

Torsten Weller's Australian postal rates articles can be found on the Abacus Auctions website. You will need to sign in to view the articles.

According to the Forces postal rate article, 1979 was the last year of the concession rates (surface and airmail) to Britain. By 1979 almost all British forces had left Australia, apparently.

Best wishes,
AndewG

The first three covers were posted in 1974. The last one in 1975. Did the rate increase during this period, i.e. 30c to 60c, to 70c?

Good covers. I would think the 60c Advanced Education is difficult to find as a solo franking.

I trawled the internet today and found that a Captain Walter William Shillitto was seconded from the Royal Marines to act as Director of Music for the Royal Australian Naval East Area Band, based in Sydney, some time around 1977. This explains why a British Royal Marines Captain was based in Sydney.

This information was taken from the website www . Exroyalmarinesbandsmen . Net

Not a bad gig for a Royal Navy musician - playing HMS Pinafore in Sydney for a couple of years rather than freezing in Portsmouth.

Hi,

Is the 47c surface rate correct for this cover:
sb_may2021015.jpg
The cover, which had a card, was mailed by surface rate from Ulverstone, Tasmania to Avon, England. It was franked with a 2c Coral Hopper and a 45c Textile Cone Shell and was postmarked 29 SEP 1987(?). Perhaps overpaid by 2c?

Only my second "Sea Mail" label used on cover.

Best wishes,

Hi,

Not commercial, but the cover is franked with a 36c "Mountain Bred" from the Man from Snowy River set:

The cover was postmarked with a commemorative cancel: Tweed Heads Centenary / Pelican / NSW 2485, on 27 July 1987. It was mailed to Toormina, NSW.

Nice cover AndrewG! I'm surprised nobody else has yet commented on it.

The 20c Expo 70c stamp is a difficult one to find as a solo franking. Here, to Hawaii, I agree it's paying the Zone 3 ( more distant Asian and Pacific Island countries. India, Japan, Philippines, China and Hong Kong) rate.

Ben Cropp is well known in Australia - in his early days as a spear fishing champion and shark hunter and later for his underwater documentary films and for conservation.

Yes, those Sea Mail labels on cover are really tough. Really underappreciated. I think used until comparatively recently also. I do appreciate this cover.

Thanks for your comments Temora22. There weren't many 20c Expo 70 covers among the International Youth Services hoard. Perhaps fortunately?

Thanks MJ's pet for your comments also. I hesitated to bid on the Snowy River cover, but it was postmarked in period, I believe. And it was inexpensive enough. I haven't seen any Snow River issues used on mail to the IYS!

Andrew I had overlooked your very fine cover to Hawaii.

Yes, not easy to find, but more difficult are commercial covers with the 30c 1970 Royal Visit. I've never had one of them.

Philip,

I agree, the 30c Royal Visit solo is a challenge, but I do have ONE (only).

At 24 April 1970, for Air Mail from Coffs Harbour, NSW to Scotland.

It also has the classic Slogan: "Check Address. If Incomplete Advise Writer".

No sure if anyone replied

47c was the correct surface greeting letter rate July 1987 to Oct 1988.

I only saw it applied with a 45c + 2c combination

Hi abutukit,

Nice covers, tough rates!

I was able to find four commercially used covers from the "New Millennium. 'Face of Australia' " series, which was issued on 1 January 2000.

sb_202150.jpg
sb_202152.jpg
sb_202153.jpg
sb_202154.jpg

The 45c Face of Australia issues paid the domestic rate. Smile!

The cover were postmarked in Sydney on 7 OCT 2002 and were mailed to a contest programme (?) in Sydney.

Now for the other 21 issues in the series.

Please forgive the ignorance, are such giveaways popular in Australia?

Best wishes,
AndrewG

Hi AndrewG

It was first said many moons ago that Australians would bet upon the outcome of two flies crawling up a wall. The prospect of getting something gratis has also long enjoyed appeal in this country.

"write in giveaway" competitions such as evidenced by your covers were staple offerings from many Australian newspapers and magazines in the pre-internet era. Here are some modest further examples:

Competitions301.jpg
Competitions201.jpg

Presumably most such competitions are now conducted on-line.

If you would like a few covers, with my compliments, please send me a message with your address.

Exactly. And it is an additional reason why it is hard to find post-2000 commercial covers in bulk. :(

On the other hand, this cover does appear to be commercial:

A 20c Expo 70 was used to frank a Zone 3 airmail cover from Southport, Queensland to Honolulu, Hawaii. The cover was postmarked 16 JNE 1970.

Best wishes,

The 20c Expo 70 is not an easy stamp to get solo and this one is a cracker. I have a few usages to show.
