BlackChook, I wouldn't say it is rare on cover by any means, it just seems difficult. Although it has a large print number, it was replaced by the next letter rate stamp so finding them on cover requires hitting upon a slender date range. Maybe others have loads of them. Best.

I'm assuming, based on the return address, that this NSW cut-down relief date-stamp was used at Marrickville. Alternatively, it could have been posted at another location along the sender's route to a destination outside Marrickville. This seems to be the first documented usage at this post office.

Cowley & Peck state the cut-down had been previously used at: Ashbury (1926) and Lithgow (25OC28) - it was frequently used.

Nice cut-down cds. Would the sender possibly suggest use at Marrickville?

24c Radio Astronomy good any postal article.

It is "bending" things a little bit to include it in a postcard display, although it is on a postcard!

The stamp pays postage due obviously, rather than a postcard rate as such. The judges will want to see "postcard rates" not "postage due" rates. :geek:

Don't want to sound critical in pointing that out. It is a good item. Nice :D :D

Hi,

A pre-printed view of the Batman Bridge near Launceston, Tasmania:

The 18c postcard was postmarked in Hobart, Tasmania on 16 NO 77. A 7c Sturt's Desert Pea was added to pay the 25c overseas surface rate.

A 45c West Australian Banksia by Margaret Preston stamp used on this postcard on 19 FEB 1996. Posted from Walpole to Perth, Western Australia.

45c Margaret Preston stamp Back.jpg
45c Margaret Preston stamp Front.jpg

Although fairly recent, I love this stamp, so was delighted to find such a nice example on postcard. The sender's message is also interesting - appears they got quite the surprise to find themselves the subject on the front of the card!

From 1 August 1952 and continued until decimal currency.

Could be ACSC 209 (CofA watermark) or ACSC 210 (no watermark).

Might be able to tell if it is watermarked by looking at stamp surface at an angle into a light which reflects off the surface.

Hi,

I hesitated to upload this cto postcard, however, it appears to have one of the rejected postcard designs from the 1976 series:

sb_202134a.jpg
sb_202134b.jpg

My reference is from this current Millennium Auction lot: Lot 638. Maybe?

In any case, the postcard has a view of Poinciana trees in Brisbane. The unaddressed postcard was cancelled on 19 SE 77 from Bankstown, NSW.

Best wishes,
AndrewG

Not sure. Millennium says 16 of 32 views were replaced and thus the originals are scarcer.

Prestige says 7 views were substituted ("1976 Postal Cards 18c Scenic Issue comprising the 7 views that were substituted & the different scenes that replaced them, unused."): http://www.prestigephilately.com/catlot.php?acode=289127&auc ... x=ppc&lim=

The Prestige lot shows the Poinciana Trees card "before and after":
trees pc.jpg
Not sure if your card is the original or replacement. I'd guess it is the replacement view and not the scarce one? based on the clarity of the printing (And issued 1976, yours with 1977 CTO).

Postally used of the original-but-replaced views must be scarce. Loads of these cards were purchased for investment purposes during the 1970s boom so even commercial use of normal cards are good items.

Hi MJ's pet,

Thanks for taking the time and for the information. The August 2009 issue of Postal Stationery Collector also has an article "Australian Pre-stamped Postcards 1976-77" by Judy Kennett.

I had been perplexed by the second cards that were shown next to the original seven in the article. (I started to look for more information only after I posted this message. I did not see the Prestige lot.)

So, the above Poinciana Trees card was one of the replacements--the second card that was next to the original Poinciana Trees card.

Alas, the hunt has become more interesting and more complicated. If only I could afford the Millennium lot! Perhaps fortunately, the lot does not include any commercially used postcards...

Thanks again,
AndrewG

Hi Andrew, I think the story was that the photography on certain views was substandard so that a different angle or perspective of the scene was selected for the re-issue. The cards were sold in wallets and possibly as singles. The number of 'error' varies.

Also: Judy Kennett. 'Australian Pre-Stamped Postcards 1976-77:A follow-up to the article in. Postal Stationery Collector August 2009.', PSC, Nov 2009, pp69-71

Hi Dick, thanks for your help.

I checked and it is ACSC 210 (no watermark). As it was replaced by 1/- Platypus in 9 Sep 1959, it probably was sent between Nov 1956 and Sep 1959.

Hi

Sorry I am not adding to your pre-stamped postcards! But from a reasonably similar time-frame are these 1983 Commonwealth Day stamps used on postcards.

The 27c Social Justice and Cooperation stamp pays the domestic letter rate, posted on 18 March 1983 from Darwin, NT to Abbotsford, Victoria.

Cwealth Day_27c_Social Justice back.jpg
Cwealth Day_27c_Social Justice front.jpg

Interesting how a Melbourne postcard has been used from Darwin to send back to Melbourne!

The 27c Liberty and Freedom stamp also pays the domestic letter rate, posted from Albany, WA to Clarence Gardens, SA on 30 SEP 1983.

It's funny where these items end up - although posted to South Australia, I found this from a seller in the Netherlands, and he's had to post it right back to South Australia! ;)

And the 75c Peace and Harmony stamp has been used on this pc from Cairns, Qld to France, posted on 3 SEP 1984.

The Zone 5 postcard rate was 50c, and the letter rate 85c, so guess this was using up a spare stamp!

Yes, I agree they were a tough set to get, although I don't know why!
But by comparison, it has taken me longer to find these four stamps on postcard than it did the whole 27 stamp set of the 1988 Living Together Definitives! :?: :?:
