Now that I've done showing the lighthouses of the Isle of Man, I thought I'd start a new thread with pictures of postal vehicles.

Here's a rural delivery van adjacent to the Isle of Man Electric Railway:

Over 50 years ago:

The image could not be recovered

A Willys 1958 Engineering Release mentions six Post Office 3B-based prototypes as having been produced. This earlier prototype was photographed in March 1954. Presumably any production models, if they had been built, would have been two-wheel drive, but this vehicle appears to be four-wheel drive. There is no evidence that Willys used the designation DJ-3B.

Nice PX Vespa there Gavin, I've always liked this one...not actually a current postal vehicle but an all original PMG Postie Bike of the 60's (missing a seat for some reason) as a Vespa collector too, I just love it..... and I want one! :D
if anyone knows a shed where there's one sitting looking for a home.....pick me! :D

Sadly I think they were just about all stripped down and resprayed after they were sold off in the late 60's early 70's...The originals had a lovely set of leather saddle bags as well as a "Gladstone" type one for the front carrier. I have the bag....I need the Vespa for it :D
Image

and Piaggio also made the Ape 3 wheeler (Pron.'Arpay') Italian for Bee, & Vespa means Wasp ;)
How cool would it have been to be a 60's Postie....especially if you happened to be a 'mod' in the day..

You can see a kind of hand-pulled postal cart in the background here. This photo was taken in the postal museum in Seoul, South Korea.

RIDGEWAY, TASMANIA - c.1960
Image

Miss A. Tagg, postmistress of Ridgeway (on Mt Wellington near Hobart) standing beside her trusty mail transport which was used to collect the mail several times each week from the nearby Fern Tree post office. The vehicle must have been well-ventilated, especially during the snowy winter that Ridgeway can enjoy!

Alas, the vehicle was destroyed in the February 7th 1967 bushfires as was the Ridgeway post office but fortunately Miss Tagg survived to re-open the PO shortly thereafter

Have some somewhere, but Australia Post has its own on its site (see https://auspost.com.au/about-us/images-and-news-reel.html). Here's one showing our posties and some parcel trucks.

Good point, Ian!

Also, I just wondered how many members couldn't find this thread in the Outhouse, so I've moved it to the "Nice looking stamps, covers etc" forum, where such a visual thread fits better.

This is the post office in my semi-countryside area of Hong Kong...the posties ride around to all the villages in the area on the bikes.

It was in 1952 that the Post Office van appeared in its green livery. Auxiliary of the French letter carriers, other 2CV vans will be used by various technical services of the posts. Appreciated for its simplicity and robustness, the 2CV AZUs have been used as official vehicles by Posts in many European countries.
The first 2CV vans are delivered in grey, since Citroen has not planned another painting system. Normally, however, the Post Office's material should have the prescribed livery, a dark green with the inscriptions "Postes" in yellow letters. But this requirement quickly becomes too onerous. After some specimens painted in green, the 2CV Postes will thus all be painted in grey. Until 1962, or finally they will receive a yellow livery... for the happiness of our eyes.

Re: Soleckshaw of India Post

Post by Joy Daschaudhuri »

India Post mailmen use Solar-Powered Electric Motor Assisted Rickshaws called Soleckshaws to deliver mail.

Fully charged battery can power a 20 Amp. motor which can run the vehicle upto 50km distance. If the battery is exhausted or the solar panel does not work in cloudy condition, there is option to pedal.

It was designed by Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur under Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and commercially manufactured by Kinetic Engineering Limited, Pimpri Chinchvad.

Though officially launched on Jul 9,2010, Soleckshaws were inducted into service only in Jan 2011, first used regularly in Ajmer.

Excellent environmentally friendly vehicle, Joy Daschaudhuri!

Our Royal Mail is gradually introducing electric vehicles- but of course the environmental impact rather depends on how the electricity is generated!
