Show here your Pacific Island stamped covers

Post by norvic »

Tourists are getting everywhere, these days, but it's still not common to find cards or covers from Kiribati:

Image

Multiple bar-codes on this (there's another on a label on the back) indicate that it was processed by USPS (the 00144/1002 code at the foot), possibly by Canada post, and at least three times, maybe 4, by Royal Mail (the orange ones).

A commercial cover from Vanuatu to Lloyds of London - pity the 80 is upside-down.

Image

Finally part of another to Lloyds, unfortunately both stamps are damaged, but that 1995 flowers stamp would be nice on a clean cover:

Ian even locally here finding covers used from anywhere other than PNG or that other small island New Zealand are REALLY unusual to see.

I bought a big wad of Solomon Island covers last week I'll list up for sale later tonight, and like yours and Tony's are VERY seldom seen material, as the Charities are so organised there re kiloware the whole darn lot of it gets SNIPPED!

I'll bet even early unused picture postcards are scarce:

Image

This one was postally used in Britain in 1915, and I sold it a few years ago.

Sorry postcard collectors! I don't have a better scan of this, so I'll repeat the caption here:

Now a few from Fiji. The problem with postcards is that they are generally scruffy (the writing at least), and the postmark is on the message and/or the stamps which makes it difficult to read. So it is here:

I don't know where or when, but a nice mix of what Gibbons lists as the 2nd and 3rd definitive series, although the issue dates overlap and the 8d design in set 2 is used in set 3 for the 9d as shown here.
Image

This is 1969, just 3c to England - can't be many of these about after 40 years!

DL size commercial airmail envelope from the Cook Is to New Zealand (how did it get to Britain) - can't work out the date but judging by the value of the stamps, probably 1994:

Picked up yesterday New Hebrides 1976 with 65c Pretty Conch 1972 definitive to England:

Image

But even better this card from New Caledonia. Although dated 1984 both these stamps are listed as issued in 1985.
The 3f orange definitives are SG 746 (cat £2.50 each) and the 50f Swamphen is SG 777 (cat £3.50) :!:

Cook Is 1960s-1980s real mailed covers to USA. Most are real mail to various USA states incl. Registered. Actual carried mail from Cook Islands is near unheard of. 18 covers.

A lot I sold here recently for $50, but VERY seldom seen commercial use of this era.

One of the dealers had a bundle of covers which included quite a few stamped from Kiribati Philatelic Bureau, but as 80% of the covers were from Jersey I passed on buying the lot. The Kiribati were philatelic, like some of your Cook's.

Phil, you're probably right. The handwritten date on the card would have the 7 crossed as in French (well, it is New Caledonia) - much more likely that forgetting the changeover from 1984 to 1985, in February. Thanks. Judging by the catalogue price NC mail must be really scarce - did you read the message? What a way to travel - Thailand, India... and Noumea!

Funny thing is I made exactly the same comment at our club meeting tonight when Peter Brigden showed his emerging collection of Bahamas.

There was an Otto Bickel cover amongst it with the same Nymphenburg address crossed out and the Baden Baden one hand written.

British Solomon Islands Protectorate

For collectors of BSIP, a couple of Reverend A. H. Voyce covers are obligatory.

A nice RV Ozama Twomey cachet on this cover to Voyce in 1958.

Image

The RV Ozama Twomey was one of three 55-foot vessels given in 1958 to the principal missionary organisations in the British Solomons. The Methodist Mission was given the Ozama Twomey, the Anglican Mission the Fauabu Twomey and the Catholic Mission the Mala Twomey .

All vessels were donated by the Lepers' Trust Board, an organisation founded in New Zealand. The long-serving secretary of the Lepers' Board Trust was Patrick Joseph Twomey (1892-1963).

Here's one which I find really interesting. I don't see these stamps in the SG catalogue but they have an unclear postmark which looks like 1994:

Image

And close-up

Image

This is actually four self-adhesive stamps, rouletted. The full sheet has 6 stamps, in a vertical column, with 6 labels at the left indicating the class of mail covered by the stamp, again separated by rouletting.

How did I know this when I found this cover? Because my main area of interest in 1994 was the Former Soviet Union and two similar sheets are listed by Gibbons for Moldova (SG 152-3) in 1994, showing a map of the country in pink on a dark blue background, again with the national flag at the right. There are two values.

Scott catalogues list 4 sheets for Kiribati with values 40c, $1, $1.20, $1.60. Are these listed in any of the specialist Pacific catalogues produced in Australia - or anywhere else?? I must ask the Gibbons' editor about this!

It is a shame, but interesting that, despite being to a philatelic address,

- only 4 of the 6 stamps were used
- only the low value rather than the higher value
- the labels at left were not left attached (which you might have expected)

So well worth the coppers I must have paid for it (probably no more than 50p, probably less and probably at a local fair), and ONLY because it was like the Moldova stamp which I still don't have! :)

It seems that the editors of SG are going to get splinters from sitting on the fence on this one. Their paragraph above seems to say that they were, and weren't, available for postage. If they were, they should be listed, and it would be my guess that ANY on-cover usage would be very tasty. 8)

Thanks for the excerpt fom the catalogue; very useful - they give full listing to the Moldova ones!

Guess it's worth keeping for the time being - and if I were to offer it, it might be best to send it to one of the Australian auction houses.

Interesting that nobody here has heard about it before: it's 15 years and you would have expected - if there was a philatelic distribution - that all the 'local' dealers would have been told. And where are all those FDCs that Gibbons writes about :?: :?:

Perfectly valid use. Any GB stamps which were overprinted but not surcharged could be used on inland post. So not Morocco Agencies Spanish or French, but Tangier was OK. Similarly with some of the Persian Gulf overprints, I think.

Re: Pacific Island covers - not PNG

Post by iaincraven »

I recently picked up a small collection of Pacific Covers, I'll put a few of the more interesting up.

First is an airletter to Reverend Voyce, but its a bit different than most items addressed to him. Written by a J C Wishart - the "Business Manager" of "The United Church". It discusses the creation of Philatelic covers, including costs and official objections.

"So far, we have been unable to find a black stamp but are still searching. The Post Office Munda one has dried up and there is insuffient impression from a rubber stamp!"

There are also a number of Solomons Island Cachets. Most are "by favour" philatelic items with multiple examples to the same addresses, but a few look to be commercial usages including a number of items to the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corp, Honiara.

This one was odd with the cachet cancelling the stamp - not a particular clear cancel, but the pencil notation says NILA and that looks to be a pretty small place in Shortland Island. Looks like it took 3 days to get as far as Gizo.

Last one for now is a later Wainoni 1980 registered letter to the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corp. Looks to be registered at Wainoni and Kira Kira.

Here is a 1986 Solomons cover which is presumably commercial - send to HSBC - although with 1983 Christmas 18c. With MESSENGE(R?) OF PEACE / WORLD POST DAY cachet, WE ALL COUNT(?) / POPULATION CENSUS cachet, BUMA / MALAITA ISLAND postal agency cachet along with the AIKU postmark!
