Picked up this set on eBay for a price (inc postage) that I would sell individual cards for now, with costs so much higher! Produced by Henry Murray, Arlington Supplies London, using cards produced by Ludlow Sales (NY), except Chaplin (Santoto Graphics London), and Niven (unattributed.)

In Greek mythology, Europa was a beautiful princess, who was abducted by Zeus in a form of white bull to the island of Crete. Zeus crowned Europa as a Queen of Crete and named the continent Europe after her name.

To publicize the international stamp exhibition Europhilex '02, Cyprus issued on October 22, 2002, a set of six stamps show archaeological findings, all depicting the scene of the abduction of Europa by Zeus. Here is a set of maxicards with the stamps:

Cypriot scarab seal-stone of semi-precious, 5th century BC, Ashmolean museum, Oxford:

Image

Silver coin of Stasioikos I, King of ancient Marion, 5th century BC, Cyprus museum and bank of Cyprus museum of coinage:

Image

Cypriot clay lamp, Roman period, 1st century BC, Cyprus museum:

Image

Cypriot clay lamp, Roman period, 2nd century AD, Cyprus museum:

Image

Cypriot clay statuette with the oldest representation of the abduction of Europa, 7th to 6th century BC, Cyprus museum:

Image

Silver coin of Timochares, King of ancient Marion, End of 5th century to beginning of 4th century BC, Cyprus museum and British museum. The postmark depicting the same coin, which makes this maxicard a perfect one:

Love them all.

But hate it when someone picks a thoughtful card and it gets mangled by going through a machine at the sorting office.

That's why Royal Mail insist on maximum cards being returned from postmarking 'under cover' - the stamp is in the wrong place relative to the address so just isn't suitable for mechanised sorting.

Oh... makes sense.

Let me see if I follow, not sure I do. You're saying dealers send maximum cards somewhere to get postmarked? And they get sent back, postmarked (to the dealer's order) in a self-addressed envelope? Is this common?

In some countries there is a hand-back service. In the UK we send them away to special philatelic centres. But is it common, no, because very few people in the UK make maximum cards. On the other hand people in other countries (Hong Kong for example) do make GB maximum cards under these rules. And dealers & collectors can have FDCs processed in the same way.

Actually there is an error in the printing on the reverse. It should say Sir Norman Brookes was born in St.Kilda, a suburb of Melbourne. While not a major sporting achievement, Sir Norman actually played two games of Aussie Rules with St.Kilda in 1898, hence the reason for the Saints Football postmark on the reverse.

I reckon there's an error on the obverse as well, unless he had two partings and two of those little tufts of hair, one on each side. And was he left-handed or right-handed?

Norvic, well picked up. I had never noticed the maxi-card was the reverse image of the stamp before.

"Brookes was the first non-British player and the first left-hander to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon. He won the men's singles twice, first in 1907 and again in 1914. He also won the doubles in each of those years with New Zealander Anthony Wilding, whom he beat in the 1914 singles final."

Oh for the chance to get some subjects from Great Britain where a real unique (rather than PO mass-produced) maximum card could be produced with concordant stamp design, postcard, and pictorial postmark. A few opportunities with the forthcoming Landscape Gardens issue but very few decent postmarks.

The Australian cards all say "POSTAGE PRE-PAID AUSTRALIA FOR POSTING IN AUSTRALIA AND DELIVERY WORLDWIDE."

But on the face is a 45c stamp.

In 2016 there seems to be some contradiction there though, postage overseas costs much more than that. Which side am I to believe?

I'm asking because I want to get some off ebay and send them overseas, and not sure if I need to put additional stamps on it.

As far as I am concerned once it has been made into a maximum card, with a postmarked stamp, then it shouldn't be sent through the post.

But if you get one of the Australia Post ones with the printed stamp on the front, then the postage mark on the back presumably stands for ever, a bit like all other NVIs (UK - 1st, USPS - Forever, South Africa - Standard Postcard, etc) which Australia Post for some reason declines to use on it's actual stamps.
