Time for some David Bowie cards - large cards from the V&A, but this is what I could get. Three are 170 x 120 mm, the square one 140 mm square.

Aladdin Sane - the red one with the Tokyo Pop body suit, photo by Masayoshi Sukita.

Alladin Sane - Session photo by Brian Duffy

Heroes - self-portrait for the album cover

Woodchurch Windmill, Ashford, Kent Maximum Card

Post by postagelabelsuk »

I've had a go at producing a maximum card for this issue, as one of my favourite subjects. I think it turned out ok.

Shame the postmark sponsor decided to use the use just Ashford, instead of Woodchurch, Ashford.

A bit of catching up to do on UK Maximum Cards.

1. Although apparently an older stamp this was in fact issued in the prestige stamp book to mrk the 50th Anniversary of the Machin definitive. Card: Philart Productions (which dates it to the 70s or maybe 80s), Postmark - Stoke-On-Trent showing the plaster cast head.

Image

2. More for World War I Centenary, this year's Poppy stamp (31 July 2017) on two different cards with two different postmarks. Alrewas, Burton-on-Trent, is the location of the National Memorial Arboretum

Nutley Windmill, East Sussex - 300 years old and restored, stamp issued 20 June 2017.
Card by J Arthur Dixon (DRG), cancelled with special operational local handstamp which has only the county name (largely redundant for postal purposes), and now town.

Image

Landmark Buildings - The Eden Project, Cornwall - issued 13 July 2017
Two cards, one showing the buildings under construction. First Day of Issue Postmark specific to the location, St Austell. Fussy design cards make it difficult to see the stamp, let alone the postmark.

Classic Toys - 22 August 2017. Only found cards for three of the stamps: the Teddy Bear (Merryweather on stamp), Meccano, and Horny Railways. Most of the cards are from the Brighton Toy and Model Museum, some from Robert Opie. Bears are postmarked Teddington, Trains Toys Hill Edenbridge, and with no Meccano-related postmark, they have the Edinburgh FDoI handstamp.

Votes for Women - the centenary of (a certain amount of) Women's Suffrage in Britain.

None of the cards absolutely matches the stamps, although all show photographs taken during the period 1907-1913.

2nd class 'Great Pilgrimage 1913' stamp on postcard of 1910 march in Manchester published by Greater Manchester Police Museum & Archives, with Manchester postmark. Same stamp on Museum of London postcard of Suffragists 1908 procession in London, postmark London SW1.

Image Image

2nd class 'Lone Suffragette in Whitehall 1908' on Museum of London postcard showing Pageant of Women's Trades and Professions 1909 (same postmark).
1st class "Women's Freedom League Poster Parade 1907' stamp on Museum of London postcard showing sweets stall at Women's Exhibition 1909, same postmark.

The stamp issued 20 March 2018 to mark the Centenary of the Royal Air Force has given us more opportunities than usual for maximum cards, not only because of the number of cards around but also because of the variety of postmarks available.

Here are the first two, showing the English Electric Lightning F1A (published by the Imperial War Museum, Duxford) and BAe Lightning F6 (no publisher named). (The 1st class stamp shows the F6).

I was going to add some more to the previous post, but despite removing the 's' I could not get the image links to imgur to load - the php software 'could not determine the size of the image' four times, including the images already loaded and visible while I was editing!

So I'll try one more here and if this doesn't work will assume that imgur is temporarily broken - no, that one won't display either. Can anybody see the image in the link below?

Also on 11 May Royal Mail issued a set of 10 Barn Owl stamps. [For anybody looking at the calendar this was the original date for the Old Vic stamps, but I think one of the actors depicted is now seen as no longer suitable and the two issues are swapped while they find somebody else to put on that stamp.]
The two strips of 5 stamps show adult and juvenile Barn, Little, Tawny, Short-eared, and Long-eared owls, although they could have chosen more juvenile Barn owls, I think).

Barn Owls Postmarks from Bar Owl Way, Dover and Owls Close, Cambridge.

Tawny Owl adult and juvenile

Short-eared Owl adult and juvenile. Despite appearances the caption on the card indicates that that is a short-eared owl.

Two more Red Arrows cards, using the self-adhesive booklet stamps issued on the same day as the owls: fortunately there were some relevant postmarks.

Dad's Army is a BBC television situation comedy about the antics of a British Home Guard unit during the Second World War in the fictional seaside town of Walmington-on-Sea. It was written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft and broadcast on the BBC from 1968 to 1977. The sitcom ran for nine series and 80 episodes in total, and there was also a radio version based on the television scripts as well as a feature film. Royal Mail is marking the 50th anniversary of this enduring and hugely popular sitcom with a set of eight Special Stamps.

Dad’s Army is one of a handful of TV comedies that fully deserves its classic status. The show focuses on a Home Guard platoon commanded by pompous bank manager Captain Mainwaring and assisted by his mild-mannered chief clerk, Sergeant Wilson. This motley band of men provide Walmington-on-Sea’s last line of defence against the seemingly imminent Nazi invasion.

Drawn from their own wartime memories, writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft never denigrated the patriotism or bravery of the characters but managed to make us laugh at the results of their often haphazard antics. The series was based partly on Perry’s experiences in the Local Defence Volunteers at the age of 17 during the Second World War. His mother didn’t like him being out at night, which inspired the character of Pike.

In its 1970s heyday the show attracted more than 18 million* viewers, becoming one of the most watched television programmes. [Remember UK population only about 55 million then.]

The Dad's Army Museum in Thetford, Norfolk, has a huge amount of memorabilia and sells postcards produced by the DA Appreciation Society using original stills from the BBC production.

Captain George Mainwaring (bank manager) played by Arthur Lowe.

Sergeant Arthur Wilson (senior bank clerk, but from the upper classes) played by John Le Mesurier

Lance corporal Jack Jones (butcher and veteran of the first world war and conflict in Sudan) played by (younger than he looked) Clive Dunn
