My attention has recently been drawn to a new showcase for the beautiful in philately called "Sellos y artistas" (= stamps and artists) https://sellosyartistas.blogspot.com , ranging from https://sellosyartistas.blogspot.com/2018/11/grandes-series-de-la-filatelia-universal.html to https://sellosyartistas.blogspot.com/2019/02/2-grandes-series-de-la-filatelia.html . I consider it to be the apotheosis of the postage stamp as the smallest piece of art.

Running parallel with it, by the same blogger and also in Spanish, is a blog entitled "Agora - Artistas del Sello - Los sellos más bonitos del mundo" (= the most beautiful stamps in the world) https://www.agoradefilatelia.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=26879&start=2340 , well-documented, too, with wonderful images of stamps and original artworks that are well worth viewing even if you cannot read the language.

Fabulous images of engraved stamp beauties and references to their creators abound throughout.

Here are images of the four stamps in a set featuring portraits of "famous visitors" to Luxembourg, respectively: German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832); English painter J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851); French novelist Victor Hugo (1802-1885); and Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886), designed and engraved by French artist Eugène Lacaque (1914-2005), and issued by Luxembourg on March 14, 1977, Scott Nos. 593-96.

Not sure if these came up, but Denmark has some amazing engraved stamps. In the 1960s to 80s, many of their stamps were engraved by Czesislaw Slania.

Image

Their first superb engraved stamp was this one from 1912, a random high value showing the Copenhagen Post office (Not done by Slania).

As its quite expensive, yes this is a space filler with a paper thin, but enough detail shows the quality of the engraving and border. the style of lettering on the border can be found on Danish banknotes of the era too.

Image

This was in my collection, a sheet engraved by Slania and with his pen signature, not a facsimile.

The other signature is that of the designer and the sheet shows the early stamps of Denmark.

From 1889 up to 1907, all stamps issued for use in French Indochina colony were general stamps show allegorical figures, the same stamps issued for most of the French colonies. In 1905, Paul Doumer, the governor of French Indochina, demanded to have distinctive postage stamps that show local culture. Hence, in 1907, a definitive set of stamps featuring young women of different Indochinese ethnicities was issued for use in the colony.

The set, contains seven different woman designs, was designed by Puyplat based on real photos and engraved by G. Johannet (which his name doesn't appear on the stamps). For years I try to find the original photos used to design these stamps and until today, I found five original photos out of the seven designs. Here they are:

Lao Woman from Province Houaphanh (My postcard is a colourised one. The original PC is of course B&W):

According to Michel catalogue this stamp shows a Tonkinese woman (today in Vietnam) but I think the women in the photo are Khmer [Cambodian], not from Tonkin:

Is there any truth to the story that a colonial official recognized the subjects of these stamps in a brothel, and demanded that the set be replaced?

Quick googling only churned up an article expressing skepticism:

Greaden,

You really surprised me. For two decades I collect the stamps of French Indochina and it is the first time I hear about this strange story.

After reading the link you sent, I downloaded the original 1922 article of Richmond Times-Dispatch. Although the sub-title of the article speaks about "Stamps", it actually focuses on one stamp from the set - the 75 cent shows Cambodian woman.

The stamps were designed and engraved in 1907 in Paris using old postcards issued several years before the release of the stamps. Not only the set was not withdrawn from circulation, it was revalued and reissued in 1919 and was in use until 1927 (5 years after the 1922 article was published) when new definitive set was issued.

Any way, I agree with the writer of the link you posted that write: "Westerners created an image of the East as exotic and undeveloped, and by doing so they implicitly created a rationale for the colonization of the Orient". I also wrote about this issue several times. Here is one example written in the Laos thread:

Using native Lao people in colonial exhibitions

Thanks for the information

Many designs of engraved stamps issued by the Kingdom of Laos in years 1951-1975, are based on real photos. I try to identified the original photos used to design the stamps and to collect them if available since many photos were issued as postcards.

Here is the first group of Lao engraved stamps and the original photos used to design them:

Lao Folklore – Court of Love, Designed by Eugène Lelièpvre, engraved by Jean Pheulpin and issued on July 14, 1953. The original photo was taken in Luang Prabang and was published in "La France Lointaine" in 1928:

Rice Cultivation, designed by Marc Leguay, engraved by Jean Pheulpin and issued on July 22, 1957. Original photo shows Leguay's mistress Van Sy and his daughter Eliane, published in LIFE Magazine 1951:

Buddhism Elements - Buddha statue of Phya Vat temple, designed by Marc Leguay, engraved by Jean Pheulpin and issued on November 5, 1957:

Education and Fine Arts - Lao Dancer, designed by Chamnane Prisayane, engraved by Jean Pheulpin and issued on October 1, 1959:

Funeral of King Sisavang Vong, designed by Chamnane Prisayane, engraved by Jean Pheulpin and issued on April 29, 1961. The photo was taken during the funeral in Luang Prabang:

Traditional Lao Handicrafts - Silversmiths, designed by Chamnane Prisayane, engraved by Jean Miermont and issued on April 12, 1971.

In the photo, the man on the left (which not appears on the stamp since his image was replaced by a Lao woman image) is Mr Thong Rattanakone, the goldsmith of the Kings of Laos during 1951-1975. I received the information from his grand-grandson which continues the Lao tradition of silver smiting:

I will show more stamps and the photos used to design them next time.

On March 25, 1957, the Kingdom of Laos issued a set of six stamps show Lao traditional musical instruments:

The stamps were designed by the French-Lao painter Marc Leguay and were engraved by Jean Pheulpin. Leguay used members of his large family as models to design the stamps. Photos were taken by an American journalist and were published in LIFE magazine Nov 1959:

Eli wrote:The painter Marc Leguay arrived to Laos in 1936. He stayed at Khong Island for a decade. In this period he painted mainly Lao landscapes and villages daily-life and designed some French Indo-China banknotes, depicting native Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian women.

After World War II, Leguay moved to Vientiane and worked at art school. In 1951, the secretary of Lao post, Prince Souvanna Phouma, asked Leguay to design stamps for the new independent country. The first known set of Leguay's stamps was issued on April 13, 1952. It represents "Femme Lao" (Lao Woman) and depicting his second wife Nang Sang Vane. This set of stamps was engraved by Jean Pheulpin, a French artist and engraver that cooperated with Leguay and engraved most of its designs until 1962.

For more than two decades, Leguay designed Lao stamps depicting the beauty of Laos in different aspects: native peoples, culture, art, religion, village's daily-life and Lao's landscapes. His children, wives and girlfriends were sitters in some of his designs. Leguay's beautiful work of art, make the Lao Kingdom stamps very attractive and outstanding among French colonies stamps.

More Lao engraved stamps, this time a set shows Buddhist temple carvings art from the 16-18th centuries, designed by Sa-Nguan Rodboon and engraved by Georges Bétemps (5K & 20K), Robert Cami (50K) and Jean Pheulpin (70K) and issued on February 21, 1967. I was able to found two old photos of these carvings:

Wood carving from Wat Siphoutthabat Thippharam, Luang Prabang – god Shiva (Note the temple name on the stamp is not correct):

Those Laos and Austria examples are particularly striking! Multi-color intaglio often suffers from mis-registration problems but these all look amazing.

Here is a mix of many items from all over, all found in my latest ISWSC swap circuit.

Thanks, Rob, for the great engraved stamps you posted. I don't have a lot of British colonies stamps, but I love their designs and engraving.

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834 – 1907) was a Russian chemist and inventor best known for creating the first version of the periodic table of the elements. To commemorate the centenary of the periodic laws by Mendeleev, the USSR issued on June 20, 1969 a engraved stamp and a souvenir sheet show the scientist both were designed by V. Pimenov and engraved by I. Mokrousov:

The engraved stamp depicting detail from the painting "Dmitri Mendeleev at the Working Desk" by Nikolai Yaroshenko (1886) exhibited in Museum Archive of Dmitri Mendeleev at the Saint Petersburg State University, Russia.

The souvenir sheet contains one stamp shows Mendeleev, and the background shows the first version of Mendeleev's periodic table of the elements:
