I remember, few years ago, how I held my breath when I first received the following Greek engraved set (...and my wife held her breath when she heard the price I paid for it :) ). It is a set of nine air stamps shows Greek mythological figures, all connected with flying. Stamps were designed by the Greek artist Dimitrios Biskinis (1891-1947 ) and, at least part of them, engraved by the Czech artist Heinz Bohumil (1894-1940) who engraved many Czechoslovakian and British Empire stamps. The set was issued on November 10, 1935 and four of them reissued in 1937 printed on different paper and have slightly different size.

Georges Bétemps (1921-1992) was a very talented French designer and engraver. He studied at the Ecole Estienne, the Parisian School of Arts and at the School of Arts in Bordeaux. During WWII, Bétemps joined the French Resistance.

During his career, Bétemps designed or engraved more than 1500 stamps for France, French colonies and the Francophone countries. He started engraving stamps in 1946. His first stamps were several values of a new definitive set issued for use in Cameroun depicting "Native Head":

The first time Georges Bétemps won the Grand Prix de l’Art Philatélique was in 1983, for the French stamp shows the painting by Gustave Doré’s "Bluebeard giving keys to his wife". I haven't this great stamp, and I hope one of the members would post it here.

Georges Bétemps engraved for the Kingdom of Laos several great stamps. I will show them next time. Eli

Winners of the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine, particularly in genetics and molecular biology, and their contribution, designed by Göran Österlund, engraved by Martin Mörck and issued by Sweden on November 24, 1989:

Thomas Morgan (1866-1945), USA, 1933 for his discoveries elucidating the role that the chromosome plays in heredity.

Stamp shows fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) used as models organism to study the role of Chromosomes and (bottom) recombination between Drosophila male and female chromosomes creating new type of chromosomes. Note that the name "SVERIGE" and the stamp value are duplicated like chromosomes.
Image

James Watson, USA, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, Great Britain, 1962 for discovery of the double helix structure of DNA molecule.

Stamp shows DNA double helix and X-ray diffraction of the DNA molecule (made by Wilkins). Note that the name "SVERIGE" and the value are written in a shape of double helix.
Image

Werner Arber, Switzerland, Daniel Nathans and Hamilton Smith, USA, 1978, for their discovery of the restriction enzymes, bacterial enzymes that cleave DNA molecule. This discovery led to the development of the recombinant DNA technology.

Stamp shows DNA fragment cleaved by restriction enzyme (in this case, by enzyme produced from Haemophilus influenzae bacterium) and bacteria contain recombinant DNA plasmids artificially created by using restriction enzymes. Note that the name "SVERIGE" and the stamp value are "cleaved with restriction enzymes".
Image

Barbara McClintock (1902-1992), USA, 1983 for her discovery of genetic transposition and the transposable elements (“jumping genes”), DNA sequences that can change their positions within the genome, sometimes creating or reversing mutations and altering the cell's genome size.

Stamp shows Barbara McClintock and maize plants used by her to study their cytogenetics. McClintock earned her Noble Prize about 40 years after her discovery!!!
Image
In 2005, the USA issued a stamp commemorating McClintock, but not an engraved one :( :( :(

Pierre Munier (1889-1962) was a French designer and engraver, started engraving when he was 13. In 1905, he entered the Académie Jullian, a painting and sculpture academy and a year later he entered the National School of Fine Arts. During his studies, Munier earned money by doing sketches of surgical operations and by designing, painting and engraving post cards for the tourist trade.

Munier’s started to engrave stamps in 1907, for many countries such as Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Portugal, Belgium (also for Belgian Congo), Czechoslovakia, Persia, Armenia, France and francophone countries (Vietnam, Laos...).

In 1974, many countries issued stamps to mark the centenary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. Many of the stamps show the UPU bronze and granite monument in Bern, sculptured by René de Saint-Marceaux, depicting the five continents join to transmit messages around the globe.

Here is a small selection of engraved stamps issued to mark UPU's centenary:

Gabon, designed and engraved by Louis-Norbert Hanniquet and issued on October 9, 1974:

In my humble opinion, this design of the two Lao girls reading a letter, is one of the best designs, not only among UPU stamps, but also among Lao engraved stamps:

Paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) exhibited in Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna, Austria, designed (after Rubens) by Karl Gessner, engraved by Alfred Fischer and issued by Liechtenstein on September 9, 1976 to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Rubens:

Erichthonius discovered by the daughters of Cecrops:

Athena visited the smith-god Hephaestus to request some weapons, but Hephaestus tried to seduce her. Athena fled, Hephaestus caught her and tried to rape her, but she fought him off. During the struggle, his semen fell on her thigh, and Athena, in disgust, wiped it away with a scrap of wool and flung it to the earth. As she fled, Erichthonius was born from the semen. Athena, wishing to raise the child in secret, placed him in a box.

Athena gave the box to the three daughters of Cecrops, the king of Athens, and warned them never to open it. Overcome with curiosity, they opened the box, which contained the infant and future-King, Erichthonius. The sisters were terrified by what they saw in the box: either a snake coiled around an infant, or an infant that was half-man and half-serpent. They went insane and threw themselves off the Acropolis.

During the colonial era, France used to hold exhibitions to glorify its empire. To publicize the exhibitions, France used to issue omnibus sets for use in most of its colonies. Here is one omnibus set issued on April 15, 1937 to publicize the colonial exhibition held in that year in Paris with the official name "Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne". This particular set was issued for use in French Indochina:

Designed by Jean Goujon, engraved by René Cottet:

The last stamp was issued in SS with different color and value. It is the first and the only SS issued for French Indochina. I have read in several web sites that the central woman figure design is based on a design of Diane de Poitiers, mistress of King Henry II of France:

In addition to French Indochina, same sets issued for use in these colonies: French Equatorial Africa, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Somali Coast, Dahomey, Guadeloupe, Guinea, Guyana, French India, Madagascar, Martinique, Niger, New Caledonia, French Oceanic Region, Reunion, SPM, Senegal, French Sudan and Togo.

Hi Eli,

Aged 83, I am too old a dog to be taught new tricks, so I have to depend on the sources of fine images of stamps to be posted either on Ramón's excellent blog or on the WNS ( https://www.wnsstamps.post/en/stamps?search%5Bauthority_id%5D=145&search%5Byear%5D=2019 ) and besides, I must get hold of my grandson Filip to post them for me.

Moreover, the Czech stamp printer PTC Praha (Postal Printing Works of Securities, Prague) has now wound up, the very last two engraved stamps of theirs having been "Flora" by Ota Janeček, designed and engraved by Miloš Ondráček, lavishly printed by a combination of intaglio on 5 different flat plates (one for each colour) and offset in 4 colours:

01.jpg

and finally, "Artwork of Chiasmage" by Jiří Kolář, engraved by Martin Srb and printed from a flat plate a by a combination of intaglio in black and offset for the rest of colours), aptly described as " a melancholic epilogue" of the PTC Praha by Ramón:

02.jpg

I have been following in admiration your great posts here, such that of the Greek airmail set of mythological designs by Demetrius Biskinis (two of them - the 25 and 100 Dr. values - as well as his portrait of the Czech painter Josef Mánes /1820 - 1871/ engraved by Bohumil Heinz) or the impressive stamps of French provenance, which I particularly enjoy.

A solitary gem of mine, included in my small collection of w/w engraved stamp beauties in mint condition, is the stamp showing "Le cheval blanc" by Paul Gauguin engraved by Pierre Gandon. The original painting by Gauguin was exhibited in Prague on loan from Paris in April-May 1937 at the time I was born:

Thank you very much and all the best,

Florián

I just wanted to say “thank you” to Eli and latterly Florian for keeping this thread alive with such wonderful examples of the engravers art.

Truly stunning stamps.

Even though I am very lax at the moment with my posting due to work and time constraints, I do appreciate seeing these images.

Thank you.

Many thanks, Florian, for your warm words and the great stamp images. Thanks to you, I discovered the great blog of Ramon about engraved stamps and spent couple of hours enjoining it. Here is a link to his blog:

Ramon's Blog: Sellos y artistas

Here is from your former country, Czechoslovakia (although now in Slovakia). A set engraved by Miloš Ondráček about Hero and Leander I posted in the past in the mythologies thread, but now I scanned them again with better resolution and larger images:

Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite who dwelt in a tower in Sestos, on one side of the Dardanelles and Leander was a man from Abydos on the opposite side. Leander fell in love with Hero and swam every night across the Hellespont to be with her. Hero lighted a lamp at the top of the tower to guide his way. One stormy night, the waves tossed Leander in the sea and the breezes blew out Hero's light. Leander lost his way, and was drowned. Hero threw herself from the tower in grief and died as well.

The Primate's Palace is a neoclassical palace in the Old Town of Bratislava, Slovakia. During reconstruction in 1903, a series of six unknown tapestries were found behind a wall, depicting the myth of Hero and Leander and their tragic love. The tapestries were designed by Francis Cleyn (1582–1658) and woven in the 1630s at the royal weaving workshop at Mortlake, near London. In years 1974-6, Czechoslovakia issued a set of six stamps, engraved by Miloš Ondráček, depicting details of the tapestries.

During several decades, Hungary issued many engraved stamps which I think are among the most beautiful and attractive engraved stamps in the world. I just posted in the "Folklore" thread one such great set and I think it deserves to be posted also here. It is a set shows traditional woman costumes, designed by Zoltán Nagy, engraved by Zoltán Nagy, Vertel Jozsef and Mihály Füle as indicated on the stamps and issued on September 12, 1953:

This is one of those little mysteries that intrigue a few of us.Nigel Alan Dow engraved the lower values of the 1955 set for Cyprus, this is known. This is the 100 Mil stamp from that set.
Cyprus SG184 100 Mils Hala Sultan Tekke
Cyprus SG184 100 Mils Hala Sultan Tekke
The two highest value stamps have a different portrait of the Queen. There are many subtle differences. It is very similar to the one done by Godbehear for the omnibus coronation issues, but not the same engraving. This is the one pound stamp.
Cyprus SG187 One Pound showing coins from Cyprus' past
Cyprus SG187 One Pound showing coins from Cyprus' past
My conclusion, which is really only a guess, is that Dow did this as well. The Godbehear dies would have been pretty worn by this time but I am guessing that Dow was given the same photograph to work from. Printing was by Bradbury Wilkinson who, like the other British printers, kept their engravers secret. This is why finding signed proof sheets is such a cause for celebration, well, for some of us anyway.
Where do the years go? I went from philandering to philately and didn't even notice.

Following on from my previous comment about engravers, here is a case in point.
Laos 1967 Red Cross SG220
Laos 1967 Red Cross SG220
The 1967 Red Cross issue for Laos is one that Gibbons and many others get wrong.
Gibbons list Rodboon as designer and Chamnane Prisayane as the engraver but those who study such things have always insisted that this was wrong as both of these were designers and Chamnane Prisayane is not known to have ever engraved. Also, at this time, stamps for Laos were designed there but the engraving and printing was done in Paris, France. Only one name is shown on the stamp, that of Chamnane Prisayane so he probably designed it for a French engraver, who neglected to add his signature.

I discussed this with Adrian Keppel, who writes for Stamp magazine and he found a French contact who had this proof sheet.
Laos 1967 Red Cross signed proof
Laos 1967 Red Cross signed proof
The proof - is proof that this is the case. It has been signed by the French engraver Jacques Gauthier so one more mystery bites the dust. Proof sheets are the most valuable resource for study of issues such as this which is why the loss of the archives of the American Bank Note Company to a get-rich-quick corporate raid was such a crime.
Where do the years go? I went from philandering to philately and didn't even notice.

Save the Nubian Monuments

In 1959, the construction work of Aswan dam in Egypt began. The old Pharaonic Nubian monuments were under threat from the rising water of the Nile. In 1960, UNESCO launched an international campaign to save the monuments. Rescue operation was begun, archaeological sites were surveyed and excavated and 24 major monuments were moved to safer locations.

Many countries issued stamps publicizing the international cooperation to save the Nubian monuments. Here are several engraved of them:

Statues of Ramses II, designed and engraved by René Cottet and issued by Algeria on June 28, 1964:

Priests carrying a funerary boat, stone wall carving, Isis Temple, Philae, designed and engraved by René Cottet and issued by Dahomey (Benin) on March 9, 1964:

Heads of Ramses II, Abu Simbel, designed and engraved by Jacques Derrey and issued by Upper Volta on March 8, 1964:

We are still in Nubia, Egypt. One of the best sets issued to publicuze the UNESCO's campaign to preserve the Nubian monuments was issued by Morocco. It is a set of three stamps designed, engraved by ZIN, the Yugoslavian Institute for Manufacturing Banknotes and Coins, issued by on July 15, 1963:
