An imperforate pair of 1942 King George VI 2½ stamps. Part of the theft from the Note Printing Branch in the 1940s.

The thief, an employee of the branch was John George Garrick Martin, of Beach Road, Sandringham, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. The stamps he stole were put in his care and were meant to have been burned because of errors.

1946 Peace stamp without watermark (previously posted).

Having completed a basic set of pages for the Kangaroo and map issue (SG 1, 2, etc.), excluding the most expensive bi-colour denominations, I've been looking at other areas of Kangaroo collecting. One such area is usage and postal stationary. Another is the constant flaws.

Starting from this post I will be showing flaws as identified in the Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue (ACSC). My collection of ACSC-flaws is very incomplete and in many places the stamps themselves are fairly ugly. But I find them all very interesting.

We start with the first constant flaw listed for the first of the Kangaroo stamps, the ½d Green.

1/2d Green (SG 1)
ACSC 1(1)d. Retouch to shading over first N of PENNY
Plate 1, Left pane, position 58 - 1L58

Image
The retouch is to the four lines above N (at least).

[Thanks Rob for your thoughtful comment]
The second constant flaw listed by the ACSC for the first of the Kangaroo stamps, the ½d Green.

½d Green (SG 1)
ACSC 1(1)e. White flaw on left base of second N of PENNY
Plate 1, right pane, position 13 - 1R13

Image
Clearly showing the white flaw on right half of the bottom of the left upright of the second N.
Image
The image below is from a stamp from the same cliché , showing the flaw at an earlier stage of its development.

Philip, would I be correct if I assumed that the OS perfin variety is a 1st watermark, and is a block of 4. Again nice centring and the flaw is visually recognisable, it just gets more interesting. and I assume the previous retouch is a pair.

Rob,

I appreciate your comments. The ½d Green seems a little neglected in terms of collecting tastes. Hence there are still affordable multiples that can be purchased. Perhaps not unlike your orange Walleys. The two stamps I've shown have been from small blocks, but that is by coincidence.

Note that the Green was issued only on 1st Watermark paper and comes with two types of official Commonwealth puncture - the small and large OS.

The third constant flaw listed by the ACSC for the first of the Kangaroo stamps, the ½d Green.

½d Green (SG 1)
ACSC 1(1)f. Large coloured flaw off coast at Sydney
Plate 1, right pane, position 40 - 1R40

Image
Clearly showing the shading off the NSW coast. Greg Pope in his 2003 book on the Green notes that there are two states of this flaw. The pictures above and below show the second state where two coloured flaws join. In the first state there are two separate flaws: one attached to the NSW coast; the other in between three shading lines off the NSW coast adjacent to the end of the Kangaroo's tail.

The line below W.C.G. McCracken is all but gone except for some tips of a couple letters.

This is not actually a variety but a very unique mistake.

This stamp was a trial printing showing the background in blue-green solid colour instead of the diagonal white streaks in the upper left corner of the bright blue background as on the issued stamp. The trial was rejected by Australia Post.

However, during delivery of the issued stamps there was a small shortfall in one consignment of 60c stamp, and accidentally a number of these trial sheets were included in the delivery to make up the required quantity.

These stamps were then issued in the normal manner. In 1985 an investment holding of sheets which included some of these trials was sold. Part of this holding, including at least one sheet of the trial printing was sold to a Melbourne stamp auctioneer, who used the stamps for postage.

All recorded used stamps derive from this source, and include several multiples, the largest being a block of 6; all have Tooronga (Vic.) date stamps. The remainder of the investment package was sold to a Melbourne stamp dealer who shortly after purchasing the stamps recognised the different appearance of the trial printing. From this source it is reported that four mint sheets have survived.
