My Best Ever Error Find - Courtesy Glen Stephan Stamps

1975 45c WILDFLOWER MISSING COLOURS AND PART COLOURS

Back in the 1990s I used to purchase albums of mint stamps at 80% of face value for postage. Glen Stephan Stamps was one such supplier. In the mid-1990s I got the bargain of a lifetime.

In the albums were dozens of part sheets of the 1975 45c Wildflower stamp in unrecorded missing error states. I did a study of these in a National exhibit back in the early 2000s (Large Vermeil) and it is my understanding this has been incorporated into the Brusden White catalogue, although I have never checked.

The missing dull yellow-green discoveries which I gave Type numbers to, were new to our then knowledge.

Below is a close up of normal and part missing. Exhibit pages will follow in other posts.

Thought I'd share these "flaws and/or varieties" with you.

I would appreciate any comments on these as I am unable to find any info anywhere.

Image

Two different overprints with the one on the right seeming to have been overprinted
with a smaller font type and then again with the original bigger font.

Image

South Africa Official block with the top right showing the Afrikaans ovpt as OFF:SIEEL, the first "I" replaced with a colon.

Never seen this before.

Cheers.

In addition to the above, here are two more varieties I'd like to share.

Once again any feedback and/or comments greatly appreciated.

Image

Northern Rhodesia with what seems to be the so called "extra boatman", maybe I am wrong, but on the
½d and not the 1d as in the SG catalog.

Image

Natal 1Sh Revenue with missing center.
Fake or real?

Cheers

1995 USA Marilyn Monroe Major colour shift
RED LIPS variety

I like errors with more of a major impact visually, such as my Marilyn Monroe colour shift.
.
Munroe.JPG
Only one sheet of 120 had a major colour shift of 5mm down of the red ink. The red lips moved down hence the RED LIPS variety.

Saw this one just now, as I was about to put it on an envelope to use as postage.

Are these levitating bushes a listed variety somewhere? They have risen above the hill! Has anyone got some information about this one? I would be keen to know more.

Normal stamp also shown for comparison sake. Note that the actual colour of the bushes there is a normal green shade, not the blackish hue that you see here in the half-light of the evening as I sit, burning the candle at both ends...

Your OFFICIAL block of 4 seems to be from the 1929 issue, it is recorded as a variety as a "broken first I Afrikaans" on row 9 stamp 12.

Hi Rob1956,

Reading my (admittedly 1995 edition) KGVI ACSC, it would appear likely that this imperforate 4d koala came from material "illicitly removed from the Note Printing Branch during the late 1940s".

It's hard to imagine even a very visually challenged post office clerk allowing it to have been sold across the counter.

Interesting to note that Michael Drury, a deservedly acknowledged Australian KGV heads specialist, is now issuing certificates on KGVI material. Perhaps he has been doing this for some years but this is the first time I have seen it.

Regards,

Hi Temora22

It is true that the imperforate koala was part of the MN&SPB theft of the 1940s, it was mentioned in an early newspaper that all the koala stamps were recovered, but it was not so, only a few of these stamps remained unrecovered unbeknownst to the authorities at the time; they are rare.

I know Michael; we are both members of the ACCC in Sydney. He has been certifying KGVI stamps for quite a while though his forte is KGV.

This very scarce strip of 8 1949 half-penny kangaroos with no watermark shows dry inking affecting the three stamps at left. The first two stamps showing an extreme variation of ink stripping.
