I'm going to be pedantic again.

1. The Post Office did not "get to work on it en route" - the Post Office failed to apply the normal rules and cancel the stamps on this special delivery item at the counter.

2. Royal Mail have no way of cancelling secure items which are 'caged' at mail centres and delivery offices to keep them secure until the go for delivery. But at some stage in the custody of Royal Mail, the pen was applied as they are entitled to do in the absence of any hand-held cancelling device at these places*. (* There are handstamps at mail centres both for packets and revenue protection purposes, but these would not be adjacent to the secure area.)

The only fault for the absence of the normal postmark lies with Post Office Ltd. It's too late to find out now which branch that was as the tracking number is off the database.

I have sent mail this way my self (special delivery and recorded)and trying to get anybody to cancel the stamps then and there is impossible.
It's bad enough to get the post office to put a real stamp on a letter at the counter these days so asking for somebody to cancel stamps at point of departure is certainly far too much to ask for .
I sent a letter last week and asked for postage stamps to be Applied. All the post mistress did was write the value on the letter and threw it aside for later.

I am tempted to write half a dozen self addressed envelopes and post them over a couple of weeks just to see the results.

Things will get a only lot worse next year when our main P.O moves into W. H. Smiths.

Here is a picture of the stamps from box I received last Thursday from my favourite stamp shop. Not recorded or special delivery. Just sent standard post.

Image

I am thinking of starting a collection of modern fine used stamps again due to the rarity of a good old fashioned post mark. They seem as rare as hens teeth.

This 23 April 1953 airmail letter to the USA has a strip of 4 of the 3d se-tenant "Produce Food", a strip of 3 of the 3.1/2d se-tenant "Produce Food" and a 1.1/2d QM making up the correct rate of 2/- for the first half ounce. But because the roller cancel did not cover everything, some clown has applied his individual touch to the rest!

But still, it gives me a nice commercial usage of this food set.

Now that I've returned to Stampboards after an extended break, I can show the latest
pair of covers (cropped to fit here) that I've received with AusPost pencancels.

Image
This cover brought me a recent purchase from a Melbourne stamp auction house.
(It has a courtesy arrival datestamp added, upon my request at the counter.)

Image
This cover brought me my July issue of Stamp News.

The saga continues. Glen keeps saying that senders should politely ask for neat
circular datestamps at the PO counter. Hmmm. /RogerE :(

This one came from Melbourne. I've cropped it to fit.
It received a three line digital code as it went through SWLF in Sydney.

Another PEN cancelled cover, courtesy of Australia Post,
with stamps which would have been quite collectable if the
circular date stamp had been applied:

Image

As noted on the label covering the address, this cover (shown cropped) contained
the latest Stamp News.

I recently included in an e-mail to Stamp News the request to have the mailout
covers cancelled at the PO. The answer was an apology, followed by the explanation
that they use bulk mailing to send out the subscription copies, and the PO does not
cancel bulk mailings... :(

The pen cancel saga continues...

I have been asking eBay sellers to use collectable stamps for
postage when mailing my purchases, and to please request
datestamp cancellations at their Post Office counter because
I have been receiving numerous envelopes with stamps that
were pen cancelled en route... (Since I have to pay the postage,
plus 10% GST even on the postage when buying from overseas
sources, this does not seem like an unreasonable request. :) )

Two very recent arrivals show how this turned out:

A sequel to my two latest pen cancelled covers:

I think my seller tried to oblige by requesting that the stamps
on this cover be cancelled at the Post Office when mailing.
Perhaps "date stamps" do not immediately spring to the mind
of a UK postal person when asked to "cancel" the stamps:

These were not applied at the Post Office they were applied at the Mail Centre because they had not been cancelled at the PO and did not get cancelled by the sorting machine.

I would have thought a "13 strike of the hand obliterator" would actually be quite collectible.

Its crazy, if you think about it.

If it got to Australia unfranked, there is no possible benefit for Australia Post in adding biro marks to it...... just extra costs.

If they did arrive unfranked, and dubiously got sold back to Blighty, and illegally re-used "on exactly the same sending", its RM that would suffer the loss, as Australia Post would still get their terminal fees.

So, think on AusPost - "Your unnecessary actions are killing stamp collecting as a hobby"!!

Australia Post is pretty good at it. At least half my mail arrives uncancelled to my post office box. I have the local post office sorter trained not to deface them. Still some do get ruined either earlier in transit or if the regular sorter is away.

What annoys me the most is that when I have hand franked mail sent to me a large percentage of it gets machine cancelled or scribbled on. :x :x :x

Perhaps, the way this is going, a pen cancel will be the typical way a stamp is "used" and the catalogues will have to reflect that?

Yes, as annoying and disappointing as the PEN CANCELS
may be, I think fchd has a more far-sighted philatelic point
of view to offer. The stamps are still stamps, and the covers
are still covers, after the pen-wielder has done his/her work.
We would have much preferred neat circular date stamp cancels,
but what we did get was still part of the mail-handling process.

A parallel may be drawn with past collector practices, such as
discarding perfins because they were ruined by the holes punched
in them, not keeping high value "kangaroos" with telegraph/telegram
holes punched in them, not preserving duty stamps or railway parcel
stamps or poster stamps or other cinderellas because they were not
"real stamps", or tearing parcel labels to "save" the part bearing stamps,
but not perceiving the postal history significance of the document that
carried them...

Thanks to a few far-sighted philatelists of times past who kept such despised
items, modern collectors can still acquire examples, and many more collectors
now value them for what they are and what they tell. Many have moved on
from the older attitudes towards these categories. Perhaps it is time to
start thinking in this way about the ugly PEN CANCELLED covers we are
seeing/receiving so regularly... :?:

An interesting comment earlier about cancelling:
Looks like England is now world champions in non cancellation.
Hmmm, I wonder? I think that New Zealand must be up there, if not on top! So far we have been shown letters/large envelopes that for one reason or another escaped being cancelled at point of origin, and then were cancelled later by whatever method was deemed suitable.

I regularly send mail to a work colleague, in Christchurch. They are sometimes DLE sized envelopes (40c postal stationery + an additional 90c adhesive stamps), as well as larger A5 and A4 envelopes. All these bear valid postage stamps. I have also sent large packets/parcels also bearing stamps domestically: same result - not cancelled.

Unlike in Oz, the mail is delivered as is.

Q How do you collect used stamps today?

I received this $70 Express franking - with 3 x $20 Mt. Cook. All uncancelled.

Listed it up here for $A45 - dopey NZ Post, as someone could soak them off and re-use for $70 post once again .. all due to a lazy staffer not cancelling them somewhere.

More PEN CANCELS from my mailbox:

Counter staff kindly added an arrival datestamp for me on
the first cover (out of sympathy when I showed it to them
— a small recompense):

Nothing to say for the next:

An old PSE drafted into contemporary use, and then
contemptuous penmanship:

And finally, another cover with an arrival datestamp added
by sympathetic counter staff, this time over the stamps:

(Current record holder for pen cancels received in 2019?) :(

Bad pen cancels are nothing new. Here's a selection on classic US stamps.

The PEN CANCELLER spotted my latest cover from Canada,
and made sure it didn't arrive unblemished:

Well, that certainly prevents me from reusing those stamps to post my Australian mail 8)

Farley showed some classic US stamps with pen cancels.

But isn't there an important difference? Weren't those stamps
subject to pen cancellation at the point of posting? Probably at
small offices with broken/missing/lost datestamps awaiting
replacement, or other related problems, such as exhausted supply
of ink for the datestamp inkpad. Pens were the standard writing
instrument of the time, and ink supplies for writing were in better
supply than the type of ink needed for datestamps. Thus, pen
cancellation at the Post Office was a natural solution. (Of course,
informal fancy cork cancels were another option in regular use.)

The instances Farley showed are certainly inelegant examples but
are "proper" contemporary examples. In contrast, the modern or
contemporary pen cancels shown by me and other disappointed
Stampboarders in this forum are instances where the covers were
not cancelled at point of mailing (due to various factors, such as haste,
laziness, inefficiency, or perhaps other more excusable causes).

The intervention en route by a pen wielder could alternatively be intervention
by a handstamp — a "dumb" (anonymous and undated) canceller, for example —
but the postal authorities resist all pleas to require such an alternative method
of cancellation...

Stamps ruined by permanent marker

Post by Elthamboy »

I have been reading with interest posts regarding stamp cancellations with a 'sharpie' and have to ask the question, are these stamps worth keeping or will this be how postage stamps are cancelled in the future, and have no choice but to keep them.
I get really annoyed with this process, especially when I received a parcel a few weeks back with almost $20 in postage stamps and the lot were ruined with a permanent marker which wasn't 'sharp' believe me.
I believe from your posts the permanent marker cannot be removed.
Cheers

Most people here would say the stamps are ruined, are worthless, and to throw them in the bin. However this is increasingly becoming the norm for cancelling stamps. You can collect whatever you want, however postmarked stamps will always be preferred.

This happens quite frequently..wish they'd allow the sender to cancel if it's such a bother. :x
I do keep the stamps, till I can replace with similar used or mint.

Recent mail..the pen markings on the series of flowers on top made me tear up..I wanted to collect that series :(
