The Prince of Thanatos kindly sorted a nice array of stamps to affix to his letter to me.

But unbeknown to him, the evil pen-wielder was waiting to ruin the envelope!

S/he even managed to scribble over the already-cancelled Thanatos stamps at the foot of the envelope! (These clowns must do training courses in vandalism to ruin this and so many of the other covers shown in this thread!)

Yet another GB cover, where the sender went to a lot of trouble to find a variety of desirable commemoratives to put on my magazine.

But he needn't have bothered. The evil pen-wielder was taking a few moments' break from his court case against the Subpostmasters to ruin yet more mail.

Oh well, he probably went home with a feeling of "Job well done!"

Getting mail from GB used to be fun before this crazy bunch ruined it.

Yep, this is what passes for postally used British stamps these days. Royal Mail even deface stamps that do by some miracle acquire a more acceptable postal cancellation. These are all items I've received during the past couple of months (with one I've sent to someone else).

The halfwits are out in style at the moment. Busiest time of the year for the Mail so they are on this like a bad rash.

Image
Image
It almost seems counter intuitive but at the busiest time of the year they are now defacing stamps which have already been correctly cancelled. They really must get out more.

I was angry, but now I'm despondent to the point of resignation.

As if to add insult to injury, even though they can't properly cancel real stamps, Royal Mail are applying postal cancels to PPI's that bear a pre-cancelled "stamp" image.

Even though it looks like a stamp at first glance, it is in fact just part of the Post Paid Impression printed direct onto the envelope.

These are a couple of direct mail items I've received recently.

I thought my AusPost pen cancel specialist must have taken a holiday,
but over the past couple of weeks the specialist has made a comeback.

Here are some examples (just the stamped portion of the envelopes
received):

For the next one my local Post Office staff supplied, on request, a neat

Yet another strike by the pen cancel specialist,
presumably applied after the cover passed through
the Sydney West Letter Facility [SWLF] on 03/12/2019:

What a pity the SWLF handling didn't supply a digital
cancellation (such as the Hound) on the stamps :!:

Here's one more recent strike by the pen cancel specialist.

This one was processed through the Dandenong Letter Centre [DLC]
where it received a digital date (and time) stamp on 15/12/2019,
(inverted off in the top left hand corner of the envelope) and a string
of pink sorting code/destination bars that actually reached onto the
left hand stamp (faintly visible in my scan).

Never mind, the specialist still added a pen cancel to it, while
allowing the right hand stamp to go free of blemish...

Tracked and registered mail SHOULD have the stamps cancelled at the counter, although some staff believe it is not necessary for international mail. I was actually told so by one of the ladies* at my Crown office, although I asserted that she was incorrect, and other staff confirmed this. (* despite my frequent attendance, I had not met this lady before!)

But PO counter staff are NOT obliged to cancel stamps on ordinary letter post, except for Large Letters. Most will, some refuse.

I challenged an independent subpostmistress on this. She conceded that she could, but wouldn’t, and that way she couldn’t be wrong.

Makes no difference with some mail through Australia Post.

He we have a nicely hand cancelled letter which has then been passed through the mechanical canceller and then to add insult to injury the nice sorter at the post office decided to attack with a felt pen.

My ageing memory seems to recall that Australia Post staff under their regulations are not allowed to deface stamps.

I am not referring to cancelling the stamp by using pens or texts, to denote use, just wanton damaging.

Your example, with the 450 written over it, is a good example, and the only one I see on this thread on a quick look, so I think if you ask for the postal manager, point out the damage, you will be refunded the $1.

There are a few other examples of mine on the thread. My local post office knows me very well by now and the problem really only arises when there is a relief person doing the sorting into the boxes. The usual one is too frightened now to upset me.

I did not know about the refund so I will try it next time I have a problem.

Yes, I have done it and been successful, admittedly about 4 or 5 years ago. It was at an Aussie Post office, not an LPO. As I recall, it related to most of the stamps on an incoming parcel when there was adequate space not to do it.

The point is, start with the highest ranked person in the PO not the assistant at the counter, ie, ask for the postal manager.

My mail yesterday included a letter from USA,
thoughtfully decorated with Christmas and other

Happy New Year to all.

My Friday return from holiday brought me this amusing cover.

It's not exactly ruined by pens or sharpies, but I'll never get that packing tape off. The key to understanding why this first-class letter got inspected is to note the origin - Amsterdam. The envelope, of course, contained a small purchase of stamps and not the cannabis bud / seeds that Border Services was looking for.

I'll save this for someone doing an exhibit on the subject, as it's perhaps made all the better by that piece of yellow caution tape.

I wonder whether Border Services use sniffer dogs — wouldn't

P.S. Come to think of it, wouldn't it have been icing on the cake
if this cover has acquired an inverted digital dog at the Sydney

I don't think I could be certain that pencancel originated within Australia,
but the fact that I've received quite a few mail items cancelled in much
the same manner, and they include numerous examples that originated
in Australia, led me to conclude it was probably local work, perhaps
even by the same hand.

Well, BigSaint, I have done a more polite version of that. I was restrained,
because my local Post Office staff are friendly, obliging and sympathetic.
But they give me something equivalent to Basil Fawlty's employee Manuel's
reply: they know naathing, señor Rogers. They say it doesn't happen on
their watch or in their office, and they have no idea where the pen-wielding
culprit is lurking. (They might also be too young to be familiar with Aunty Jack.)

[I did try to start a thread dedicated to AusPost pencancels to get an accumulation of such
items in a single place, with the intention of using this as supporting documentation to
present in an appeal to AusPost senior management, but that was deflected into the current
thread on the basis that it already covered pen cancels in general...]

Methinks they are fibbing. Actual "handling" of mail will only happen at departure point or arrival point and not at mail centres along the way. As this is happening to you frequently it would seem obvious that it is happening at arrival point.

I agree with Ubobbo.

Have a look at the consistency of the scribble over the past 6 months.

Next time it happens, quietly ask the Postal Manger, not just a staff member, to seal and view all the CCTV footage as you will be referring this upwards, along with this specific request. Bet it stops.

Also, I wouldn’t ask for any special cancels etc, just be Mr Nobody as you might have upset someone.

Today's PO Box yields two items with the Pen Canceller's
handiwork.

The first from Victoria, with the Dandenong Letter Centre digital
date stamp for 12.28pm on 31 Jan 2020 in the bottom right corner,
no digital dog in sight.
(If it had appeared on the stamps, perhaps the Pen Canceller
might have noticed and exercised restraint?)

Image

Image

The second is from Florida. Same style penmanship, so I'm guessing
it's the work of the same Pen Canceller.
Surely scribbling on the plate block is a Cardinal Sin? 8)

Image

Image

As usual, this incoming overseas mail item has passed through the
Sydney West Letter Facility (6.09pm on 3 Feb 2020), collecting an
inverted digital dog handling cancel in the lower left corner.

Image

Yes, I did show them to the PO counter staff, and renewed the discussion
about where the pen cancels might have been added in the mailstream.
They avowed that none of the staff in their PO would do it, but hazarded
a variety of suggestions as to where the Pen Canceller might sit in the
mailstream. Basically, they don't know, but one of the most helpful has
promised to "keep his ears open" for me.

Thanks Mister Pen, for ruining yet more "otherwise nice" stamps from the UK!

Since all our complaints about such pen-cancels seem to come to naught, perhaps we should go over the heads of these "budding philatelists", and complain directly to the UPU.

If we can get them to issue a directive to all their members that "datestamps only" should be used to cancel all stamps, we might end this plague!

I doubt it, but it would seem sensible for them to remind all UPU members that "With current world security issues that carriers are facing, they should, as a minimum, show one clear mark on the item, to identify point of entry to the system".

(You'd hope that "if they have the cancel in their hand to meet this obligation", they would "do the necessary" on the rest of it).

When a suspect anthrax package gets sent to a US Senator, they seem to know within minutes the exact box it was posted at, and that is certainly not by examining the pen squiggles.

If a pen cancelled package arrived at my door...
"How can I even be sure its been in the postal system at all?".

At my local society meeting last night I asked for a show of hands
by those who had received pen-cancelled covers during the last
couple of months. Out of about 20 philatelists present, four raised
their hands. Since they come from a cross-section of Newcastle
suburbs, I think that puts to rest any suggestion that pen-cancelled
covers arriving at my Wallsend Post Office have been given that
special treatment within the office. The handiwork is definitely
occurring earlier in the mailstream...

At least Canada Post is doing everything it can during these difficult times to assure everyone that they are business as usual.............

Just received this in the mail and the pen stroke is a reminder that even during a pandemic, some things never change!! :x

Australia Post sent a clearly postcoded by me (twice) large letter from member Nightwatchman to and from Sydney-Melbourne FIVE times and some PO cretin en-route destroyed the clearly cancelled franking in the process, with a heavy marker pen -

FIVE times to and fro in fact over 3 weeks. Signed for Monday April 6.
The system is broken .... nothing on the cover would make you think it was unusual surely?
I write receiver postcodes large and clear BOTH sides.

Not satisfied that they took three weeks from Sydney to Melbourne, the following is how Australia Post added insult to injury.

Immerse them in a dish of Eucalyptus oil FAST.

A flat dinner plate will work well and you can pour most of it back into the bottle when they are saturated, and tape peels off.

Thankyou Glen. I will let the owner know. I note the postmark is September last year so I hope it is not too late.

Hi all

I think I have a candidate for pen cancel of the year here.

Sent to me by my brother in France, “on piece” as saved by his girlfriend from their Italian office, this is a corker.
Pen cancelled Post & Go stamps
Pen cancelled Post & Go stamps
I don’t recall ever seeing a larger set of Post and Go stamps used like this. Would have made an amazing display cover :(
