Not a block of four, but a strip of four :)

½d small multiple watermark perf 14 OS strip of four used,
both the first and the last stamps are "Die 1a", so I assume to be plated as 8L13-16 (8L13 and 8L16 are Die 1a).

A single used stamp is catalogued at $200 in BW, I have seen pairs but first time to see a strip of four (I wish it is a block  )

Image

I am comfortable with the OS, looks legit to me :)

Love that 1d red block Alex!

=============

Here is a very unusual one I offered here this week and was snapped up to Canada -
Image
Aust. 1932 KGV 4d o/p “OS” pretty postal used Block 4.

Most know my view on the massive upside potential postally used blocks of things other than letter rate. They are stars of the future once ACSC lists and prices them, as they will.

A fine used block of the high value Official is s gem .. only one I have ever handled.

Clean and fresh, and well centred, and free of faults. You will never see another block most likely.

“Registered Rockhampton Qld 4 AP 32”. Issue date was ‘March 1932’ so this was commercially used very near issue date, and for Rockhampton would almost certainly be the earliest date recorded.

Good evening all :)

A recent purchase in London (at the shop opposite Stanley Gibbons)

Image

Right now travelling in UK and don't have access to a scanner, hence the poor quality of the scan (as I took a pic from my mobile phone), but I hope this will be still ok....

1/4d CofA watermark block of four used. Paid 10 pounds for the block :D :D

Pretty sure it is plated as L1, L2, L7 and L8. And L2 is listed in ACSC (in particular see the flaw where emu's tail touches the right frame). But haven't got my ACSC with me either so can't tell exactly.

Cheers

A block of 10 of the ½d. Orange KGV small multi w/mark, perf. 13½ x 12½ on cover to Edinburgh:

Image

Although it has an "By air mail" etiquette, it was well underpaid for that as the rate was normal postage plus 1/- per ½oz.

I suspect the original intention was to have it sent on the just started All Australian airmail service to England by A.N.A. Ltd., however, on the 18th. December 1931 the plane crashed in England and wasn't operational until January 1931. It probably then had 5d. in stamps affixed and sent via sea.

Good if someone could plate these for me :D

I have another almost identical cover to the same address but sent two years later. It has 2 strips of 3 and 2 pairs so I've just shown the one with the block.

Tony, the airmail would have been for the domestic portion of the route. The letter may have been flown to Perth and put on board ship, or something similar. That rate would then be correct, 3d for airmail and 2d for Empire letter rate.

You replied to my questions on this block in a different thread. I totally missed your (this) excellent thread so I think it is apt to post the block again here and increase the 'collection'. I repeat below my earlier post and hope this is OK to admin.

"This is an Ash imprint block of 4 that is indicated as SG131 (Multiple crown C of A). This is listed in ACSC 131z of course but with no reference to cancellation.

The scan shows cancel as Registered 1st AUG 1933 (I am presuming the second 3 that seems a little wobbly). NSW also identified and possible Sydney?.

It seems unlikely this was ever on a letter?? Also the 'turquoise' assessment needs adjustment I think in light of 131 A-D in ACSC..

What is significance of cancellation and does this affect CV?

As I said, stamps not arrived yet and I am using enlargement from vendor, so I cannot assess back. I will of course fill in details when it arrives if needs be".

Block

Image

Cancel

Image

Comments

Mobbor indicated that it was OK and maybe was used for philatelic purpose and also that there may have been more postage on any letter/parcel. He agreed with my cancel reading.

He also doubted any turquoise but added that the estimation of colour fitted older catalogue evaluations, not modern.

Anyway this is a very interesting block and I wonder why there is no estimation of CV for cancelled items such as this?
As you said it maybe that they are scarce and so market cannot be established. I would guess that the CV for a genuine cancelled item would be at least x 2 to 4 of the uncancelled!

What would you pay, not that I intend to sell, just a market probe?

I assume you have looked at auctions for a clue to values?

As indicated above when block arrives I will send in a better scan.

Best regards

John

There are some really nice postally used KGV Blocks on display in this thread. But seeing that the title includes the word 'used' I thought I would put up one that is really 'used'.

Note the features: Chewed top corner, (actually make that 'badly creased top RH corner because I just discovered it was folded over and I have managed to tease it out!), partial perf separation middle right side, practically illegible postmark (correction - make that 'illegible postmark'), bottom perfs poorly punched, perf missing along top (oops - another one teased out!), missing perfs RH middle (got excited by previous finds but I haven't been able to find these).

And that is just the front. The back has more creases than a ninety year old's tummy.

I could not see any plate varieties either - hardly surprising given the amount of ink splashed all over them.

On the positive side, at least one can say it probably came off one of those brown paper wrapped parcels, and the damage is therefore expected. No toning (well, not much anyway) - that has to be a plus!

My offering - what seems to be a well and truly used carmine rose KGV Block (somewhat intact!). As scanned before the improvements, but unless there is a huge demand I don't propose to rescan the improved version)

Image
Malcolm - My collection has more gaps than a five year old's smile.

Australia KGV 1/4d Blue KGV head stamp, VFU Block 4 Canberra Parliament House!
4 x 1/4d was 5/4d, so if a parcel weighed that, the clerk would taken a commonly used 5/- Roo, and a 4d value from his drawer, so 4 x 1/4d was a truly amazing choice!

Has been POSTALLY used I’d say, as it has no gum and has a minute pinhole on 1 stamp, consistent with real parcel mail use.

A block of 1/4d with ANY cancel is a lovely piece, and with a crisp black “PARLIAMENT HOUSE CANBERRA FCT” cds of 1934 even a larger bonus.

Top value of the KGV head series, and everyone knows that one day I feel ACSC will list and price USED BLOCKS as occurs in Europe and the market will then EXPLODE for pieces such as this.

“FCT” was Federal Capital Territory – it did not become ACT until later. The ‘FCT’ was renamed the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in 1938. As the new city did not become operational until the late 1930s there was not a long use of this “FCT” canceller at Parliament House.

The Great Depression hit soon after Parliament House was opened.

I did not realise until researching this, that until the World War 2 Canberra was more a small country town than a capital city. Neither the Anglicans or the Catholics had a sizeable church there, amazingly.

No foreign embassies or Consulates appeared to have been erected until the latter 1930s.

I hope nobody minds as this is not exactly postally used, it I has a red favour cancel from the Melbourne Philatelic Exhibition....

Still struck me as quite a nice block, the dealer had 4 of these and whilst £4 is no bargain, I was happy enough to add some variety to my collection!

KGV ½d Orange Block 4 with crisp PADDY’S FLAT NSW cds! $A45
ANY used block of a ½d KGV stamp, paying the 2d letter rate is most unusual. Added to stock today at $45.

This was 1940 in WW2. and probably that ½d stamp had been sitting there for years in this tiny office!

SG 124 Cat £20 = $A40 as 4 SINGLES! Good used block 4.

I have never in my life heard of Paddy’s Flat and googled it.

This place totally redefines the definition of REMOTE!!! All the black font "Big Smoke" places marked, I have never heard of either! 8)

Lower right could be 1/R40
Can't see it clearly ...Value tab ...A short back leg to R in three and second E is sometimes joined to the N below .

The only thing on that stamp is the dent behind the last E and a thicker bottom white frame and a extra bit in the white area in the top right corner.

Unless you want to add the top of the T, top of the F upper frame to R

Also there are no flaws on 39 or 33
