Postmarks of Closed, or Changed Name Australian Post Offices

Post by manfaefife »

I don't know if this topic's been done or done to death before, but as I've just started collecting Australian Postmarks, I wondered if a topic showing Closed Post offices would be of interest.

Using the PPA site https://www.premierpostal.com/cgi-bin/wsProd.sh/po.w?

Show a full or partial strike of a Post Office shown by PPA to have closed or changed it's name, and enter the PPA details.

I can start it off with one I've shown before.
WARBURTON WEST, Vic PO 7/2/1893; renamed Wesburn PO 16/2/1925

As I say if it's been done please ignore above.

Just came across this one in an unchecked lot in an album. Ok it's a partial strike, but it can only be The Risk, NSW PO 1/7/1908; closed 31/1/1972.

Can anyone tell me anything about The Risk, as there's little info online.

I called into the Everton General Store earlier this year when I spied an Australia Post sign out front.

The store is a Community Postal Agent but does not possess a date stamp. :(

Must have been drunk when they recorded the name. I would have thought ... in Western Australia ... "BEERIA" would have been the choice of name.

But seriously ... nice find. :D

Great thread.

I've often wondered about Eden Park where I live.

Eden Park RO 7/10/1905; PO 1/7/1927, provisionally closed 30/9/1971; closed 31/12/1971.

I've managed to find where it used to be located at the end of my street, but I've never seen a postal cancel for it. Does anybody have a pic of one? I've also noticed that in the BN cancels that it isn't shown, does this mean that the 1905 opening makes it too late to be allocated one?

I did read in a local history book that the original post office was on the back porch or an old house that is no longer standing, but I can't find any photos of that either.

I have a swap of it on piece (90%) over KGVI 2 1/2d red dated 18Mr43.
Happy to swap it for a strike from another closed office.
