Hi!

I finally received the stamp and can confirm the date as 15 JE 1922. Does anyone have any information about the postmark?

Thank you very much

Here's an interesting postmark:

Image

Oodla Wirra South Australia.

According to Wikipedia
Oodla Wirra (formerly Penn) is a small town in the upper Mid North of South Australia. It is on the Barrier Highway approximately halfway from Adelaide to Broken Hill.
When the railway was built in 1880, a siding was provided, named Oodla Wirra. Soon after, a town was surveyed near the siding, but it was named Penn. This naming conflict continued until 1940, when the town was renamed Oodla Wirra, to match the railway station.

So if it was named Penn until 1940, how come the postmark says Oodla Wirra in 1931?
All the references I can see in official documents spell the town as two words, yet the post mark appears to be only one.

Any extra information for example rarity appreciated

josto wrote:Found this interesting example in a small ebay lot. From what I can see I`m quite sure the postmark is PAID AT CAMPERDOWN. It is dated 15 DE 22. Unfortunately I don`t have a better scan, but I think even in this small size it should be identifiable. I had a quick look at PPA and saw, that there are such "paid at" postmarks, but the earliest date is from SE 1943 (rated RRR) until JE 54. So either this is a new postmark or it is a new ERD by over 20 years!? I tend to the ERD, but I thought I should show it as a curious find. Does anyone have more or other information about that postmark?
Image Thanks a lot. josto

A new ERD I would say.

I recently found this interesting 4d KGV

Image

Presumably it is Majorca, Victoria which had a population of about 200 in the late twenties, early thirties.
I expect that it isn't common.

What I found difficult to understand is what the upper part of the postmark might be.
There are not a lot of words I can think of that end in B, and I thought it was usual to have the town name across the top, and the state name across the bottom, of a canceller.

Can anyone provide more information?

Edit. Just noticed. My 2000th post.

The top of the postmark probably says M.O.& S.B. Money order and savings bank.

So you consider the '6' to be normal? Didn't it's weird shape suggest a double strike?

Something I posted on another thread:
Rocklea.
Rocklea is a large suburb of Brisbane, Queensland. The suburb is located 9 kilometres south of the city. The west of the suburb is bordered by the Oxley Creek. The suburb's name is derived from the Rocky Waterholes in the area.

It is also at one end of the Ipswich Motorway and has a train station on the Beenleigh line. Ipswich Road continues north from the Ipswich Motorway, through Moorooka and into the Brisbane central business district.

Rocklea is a mostly industrial suburb, being the home to many large firms from a range of industries. At the 2011 Australian Census Rocklea had a population of 1,255.

The locality was originally called Rocky Water Holes. It was renamed Rocklea with the opening of the railway.

The suburb was once the centre of the Shire of Yeerongpilly which was established in 1879 and disbanded in 1925 after the City of Brisbane was created. In 1949, Commonwealth Engineering established a railway factory in Rocklea. On 31 July 2009 the last race was held at the Rocklea horse harness racing track.

Rocklea is one of Brisbane's most flood affected suburbs. Severe damage was experienced in both the 1974 Brisbane flood and 2010–2011 Queensland floods. After the 2011 flood, home and land values in the suburb decreased dramatically. The median house price decreased by 23.9%.

PPA tells us that the post office opened as Rocky Waterholes PO on 1/1/1866 & was renamed Rocklea PO on 25/5/1885 but was replaced by Archerfield PO on 1/7/1981.

Mount McDonald N.S.W.

PO 1/11/1881; closed 30/11/1954.

Image
Mount McDonald circa 1900

In the late 1880s gold was discovered by the McDonald brothers (John, James and Donald) at the location what became Mount McDonald. A township built up, with some 600 persons living there as well as many people in the surrounding district. A school, at least one (Catholic) Church, banks, a general store (where my namesake grandfather, Francis Conyngham Murray, worked for the Fox brothers), a resident doctor and the inevitable pubs. The township petered away by 1920, and there is little there now to show it existed. A few marked streets and the cemetery.

Frank Clune wrote in 1935:

We kept climbing and arrived at Mount McDonald. Here, there was another superb view; and also fourteen has-been taverns. An old-timer told me that reef-mining started on the Mount in 1891 and the same year they had banks, pubs, butchers, a main street, and a couple of thousand people. To-day they only have the main street; and the pot-holes exceed the population. Local industry went bung in 1912, and the place is now a one-mulberry-tree town, with more empty tins lying around that we have seen in any settlement.

Nearby are two large dams, full of water, where gold was formerly sluiced; also throats, when credit was scarce at the hostelries. We cut through the bush to the cemetery, a mile away. It is well hidden and surrounded by trees. What a miserable time the ghosts would have trying to return and haunt the fourteen pubs! White box-trees surrounding the cemetery were covered with patches of mistletoes, and there was plenty of rosemary for remembrance, yet the graves seem forsaken. A pastoral pest, called bush-mountain cane was growing wild. Beneath a tall pine-tree the rosemary was four feet high, and the Scot wistfully garnered a sprig from the most lonely burial place, I have ever seen.

Reef mining at Mount McDonald from 1877.

Extracts from the Mining Registrar’s annual reports between 1877 and 1898.

The 1881 report notes that reefs were first discovered at Mt McD towards the end of 1880, and were highly auriferous. A population of 500-600 had been attracted to the locality during 1881.

In 1882 the population (600+) had fallen to 450-500 of which about 150 were miners “…all Europeans and very respectable and well behaved’.

(In 1884 there is a reference to ‘…Mr Easdown, the energetic and very able manager of the Association ground.’)

In 1885 there were only 100 men regularly in work. This was obviously a ref to miners.

In 1886 the goldfield still supported a population of about 200 persons.

In 1889 there were signs of a distinct revival.

Records are very sparse during the 90s

In 1898 about 230 men were employed. No ref to the population but it could have been up towards 1000 by then. This seems to have been the peak and from about then it was all downhill.

I was just going through some of my KGV 1d reds when I came across this interesting postmark.

Cootamundra Military Camp. Open 15/5/1916. Closed 25/11/1916.

I presume that there would not be too many of these around.
