Yesterday my Mom and I went to the Art Gallery of Ontario. It was really cool to see all the sculptures and paintings.

Here are some pictures we took.

This art is made entirely of plastic beads and string!

Well, my stamp buddy has gone off to camp. 6 weeks without kids! I'll have more time to spend on stamps but it won't be as chatty (Naomi tends to chat...A LOT...when we are working on stamps

).

In case anyone reading this thread has the inclination to send a letter or postcard, I gave Naomi my blessing to post her camp address here. I know that she would love to get mail from around the world while she's at camp (the camp staff probably won't know what to make of it!

) - and it might even intrigue and pique the interest of her cabin mates enough to spark another budding stamp collector or two??

I've got a bunch of swaps pending - been so busy with getting kids ready for camp - but will post some pictures of stamps going to and fro here soon...

Also recently received from Teja these 2 great commercial covers from Slovenia showing proper usage of the recent postal tax stamp promoting blood donation.

This cover has a nice meter franking:

This cover has a purple handstamp "Poštnina plačana pri pošti" (Postage paid at the post office). Although I know it was mailed during the week when the postal tax stamp was required, unfortunately there's no date stamp. Nonetheless, the postal tax stamp was properly applied at the post office.

Naomi's going to be a busy stamp beaver when she gets back from camp in mid-August. Many things have arrived for her over the last weeks. I'm going to post pictures of them with thanks now rather than wait for Naomi to do it herself, lest we forget.

Thanks so much. There should be enough time for the postcard to get there, camp goes until August 15. We just went up to visit Naomi and her brother today (it's the break between the first and second session) and took them out for lunch and ice cream. They are both having a great time.

You know Jean, I thought Gravenhurst sounded vaguely familiar! So I looked it up on a map after I saw that last picture!

I was right! When we (my brothers and sister) were kids, we spent many very happy summers camping at Six Mile Lake just west of Gravenhurst.

Absolutely beautiful area!

You must mean Three Mile Lake, Six Mile Lake is quite a ways further north near Georgian Bay. The whole area of the Canadian Shield is beautiful, you can see where the Group of Seven got their inspiration!

Wow, uncadonego really outdid himself this time! I got this little package in the mail last week:

I carefully removed the plastic wrap and unwrapped the paper from around the box. It was franked with assorted high value stamps, very hard to get these used in Canada:

Inside the box were a huge collection of domestic covers, all hand cancelled in Wheatley, Ontario:

I'm speechless Don! Thanks so much for taking the time to prepare these so carefully, it's very much appreciated!

I got this wonderful cover today from zaguy, but I was dismayed by the large registration sticker that Canada Post placed right over the stamps - but with patience and microsurgery I managed to save the cover. I'll post larger pictures of the cover and contents on my Blood and Organ Donation thread.

Jean, glad you could save the cover! I remember, seeing it now, they added the 'Accepted after final dispatch' cachet when I mailed it.

That is not something you see very often these days on South African covers. Most clerks just don't bother adding it. The one who accepted this cover was new!

Naomi, I haven't looked in on this thread for I don't know how long, so never saw your thanks for the stockbook of stamps you posted wayyyy back in July. You're very welcome for them.

I assembled all that stuff over a period of months, once every few weeks I'd build up the motivation to soak a batch of stuff--stamps off mail from eBay purchases--and most of which would find its way into 'the book'. There's a good smattering of HK stamps, as my family is well-trained to save everything from incoming mail, and I send a lot of "pressies" home (Xmas and birthday gifts and other oddments like mooncakes). There was also some older stuff picked from old albums I picked up, or odd lots of stamps purchased online (if I'm bidding on something from a seller, and they have small lots of stuff from a country I don't have much of, I'll put in a bit, gives variety to the mixes I make up).

So is Naomi's brother also a collector? "yes", "no" or "not yet"?

It's been years since I went to the AGO (when I was back in Toronto in June, that was the first visit 'home' in over 4 years right there), probably about 7 years. I've heard they re-arranged the collections, and added great stuff like the Rubens that Ken Thomson bought and donated (I have a degree in Art History).

I also did summer camp when I was young--went to the same camp my mother went to, called Camp Kitchikewana, in the Georgian Bay area, boat-only accessible.

Given the fact that philately seems to be a male-dominated hobby, the boys might come around someday. They just need to outgrow computer games and all that other teen boy stuff (I was always a "weird" kid, had a Nintendo and the only thing I played on it was Tetris...and of course was a big-time stampaholic since childhood).

Got a great surprise in the mail today from ecwk. A bunch of Europa stamps on cover and on piece which I posted over on my Europa thread here: https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=32685&p=3582204#p3582204

The envelope was franked with these stamps:

At first I thought there were some water drops on them, then I realized the stamps have Braille embossing on them! You can see the bumps if you look very carefully at the top half of the stamps. Here is an excerpt from the Hong Kong Post website:

Hongkong Post today (September 30) announced that a set of special stamps on "Inclusive Arts" will be released for sale with associated philatelic products on October 15 (Tuesday).

Art knows no borders. We all have the same rights and opportunities to enjoy and produce works of art. The physical impairment of disabled artists does not in any way diminish their passion for artistic pursuits. Displaying remarkable determination and grit, these artists overcome their physical limitation and give full play to their artistic talents in their artwork. Hongkong Post will issue a set of four stamps, featuring the artwork of four local disabled artists, to give tribute to their artistic achievements and to foster an inclusive community.

To highlight the theme of inclusive arts, Braille embossing is used for the first time on stamps issued by Hongkong Post to denote the different denominations.

. When I read your reply today, I did a double take about Six Mile Lake and rang up both my brothers and sister to double check...Yup! It is definitely Six Mile Lake and is pretty much due west of Gravenhurst between (I think!) Muskoka and Honey Harbour. I grew up in Canada and have many fond memories...especially of the not as hot summers we have here!

48 degrees celcius AGAIN today! Would not see that in Canada!

I have another lot nearly ready to send on to Naomi...she probably has most of them but hopefully, she'll find something that will fill a gap or two! I still keep an eye out for Blood Donor issues for you as well! Does that include Red Cross? Just wondering!

Hi Anne, you know, I don't even know what I was thinking - you are absolutely right, Six Mile Lake is between Gravenhurst and Honey Harbour, closer to Honey Harbour. Three Mile Lake is actually north of Gravenhurst. I didn't do very well in Geography in high school!!

And yes, summers here rarely go above 30C. I remember when I was younger that they used to be much more humid, which makes the heat much less tolerable, but recent summers have not been too bad.

Thanks again for all your efforts on behalf of Naomi and myself. Naomi is always happy to get mail.

I don't collect Red Cross issues unless they are related to blood or organ donation. I have most of the mint stamps (at least the ones I could identify) but I'm always looking for covers, slogan cancels, etc. Thanks again!

When I make purchases on eBay or Delcampe, I often will ask the sellers to frank their letters with fauna stamps if possible and they usually oblige - got this one in the mail this week from a seller in Belgium:

Canada Post produced a limited edition of 800 of these very nice framed Year of the Horse stamps and souvenir sheet:

I wanted to get one for Naomi as that is her Zodiac sign, but by the time I got around to ordering one on the Canada Post website, they were sold out!

I thought I had lots of time since the snake one from last year is still available, but I guess horses are more popular than snakes!

Luckily, Canada Post had a table at the stamp show I went to on the weekend, and they had 4 for sale - I snapped one up, along with a silver coin.

A couple of nice items in the mail this week. This great cover from pbr with a Hansel and Gretel stamp:

I must admit, I was a bit nervous when Tom said he was sending the cover by registered mail, because Canada Post has a tendency to plaster the big registration sticker right over the stamps. However, Tom left a lot of room for them on the envelope:

and it was a success!
