Hello Jean,

Glad you liked the included stamps. Also, this is one the first instances when I could actually affix Indian stamps on a cover for mailing as I took a risk sending it by regular mail. Happy to note that it reached your safely.

Re: My Trading Post: Not Just For Trading

Post by Canada stamper »

I haven't been too active with stamps lately, as we have been planning an overhaul of the basement office space, which is my stamp den (and also where I do my non-philatelic home office stuff like finances, etc.). Over the years we have outfitted the office with IKEA furniture, which was supposed to be modular, but of course when we went back to add pieces, the dimensions had changed ever so slightly, so we couldn't stack them, and it's ended up a bit of a hodge-podge.

I like to keep things organized and neat, but found that stuff was starting to overflow onto the floor, and there was no room for expansion. I'd also run out of space for research material for my exhibit, so it was getting hard to keep track of where everything was.

I started to think about buying yet another bookcase and squeezing it in somewhere, but my husband suggested getting rid of everything and starting from scratch with a custom-built space. :D :D :D

So, first we got rid of a ton of stuff the kids have outgrown, and then worked with a company that specializes in creating space solutions. We settled on a design, following the principle that there is no such thing as too much storage space - I don't want to have to do this ever again! :D This weekend we packed up and moved all of my stamp stuff out of the space, and tomorrow they are coming to install - I can't wait!!

I thought I would share some pics of the progress...
BEFORE

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
In the third pic you can see the space along the top of the low shelves where I've put my old medical textbooks to good use - as weights for my drying books. :D The table with the red chairs was the kids' arts and crafts space for a long time, although now I mainly use it for sorting stamps and cutting stiffeners down to size. The cabinets along the wall in the last pic housed all the kids’ games and miscellaneous toys for many years. Recently I took over the cupboards on the right for my stamps. We realized that they'd outgrown a lot of the stuff - so out it went to colleagues' kids. It's good to take stock and purge every once in a while! :D
Image

Image
It's quite a large space when you move everything out!! :D :D

I'll post more pics as the installation progresses...

Installation Day 1
Two very nice young men came to do the installation today. They were at it from 9:30 until almost 6 pm, with a lunch break.

...and the prep for tomorrow...

Image
I'm starting to wonder if I went a little overboard with the amount of storage space.

I do like how the new colours work with the walls though. My desk was a carry over from our previous house, and when we added furniture we kept the same colour scheme. However, it made the whole room a bit too orange - the new colours set off the wall colour much better.

It looks fantastic, Jean! I wish my stamp den had that much space! :D

I doubt you need to worry about the extra storage space, I have a feeling that you'll be able to fill that up too within not too much time, if you're anything like most other stamp collectors... ;)

So true Henrik!! :D :D Although at the moment it feels a bit cavernous! :D
Installation Day 2
A couple of different guys came today and installed most of the other side of the room. Tomorrow they will finish up and then I'll be able to move my stuff back in...except that I will be out of town on Thursday and Friday, so it will have to wait until the weekend! The room seems much larger now than it did before with all the mismatched furniture and clutter!! :D :D

It's simply awesome, Jean. Waiting to see the final outcome :D

I too wish I had that much space when I had my collection. Now I console myself with about 5% of this area to manage what is remaining in my possession :(

Roland

Installation Day 3 - Almost done!
Today one guy spent most of the day putting on all the trim and finishing the fronts - just a few final touches on Friday and then I'll be able to re-populate the room when I get back. I can't wait! It's remarkable how the room has been transformed. It seems much more spacious and open, because the return separating the office area from the rest of the room is lower in height than it was before (also none of my stuff is put back yet  ).

I’m thinking to put a couple of magnetic boards on the far wall under the upper cabinets. The long wall is perfect for pictures but it’s a cinder block wall, so we will have to get stick on mounts I think. :)

DONE!!
So barring a few last tweaks (one more grommet hole in the desk and a couple of shelves in the upper cabinets), the basement office is done, and I spent the weekend moving most of my stuff back in.

It was a good opportunity to purge and I threw out paraphernalia that I didn't even remember I had. I'm going to need to do some more sorting and organizing, and I'm sure not everything is in it's final resting spot, but the office is once again functional.

Although I have a ton more space (the office basically swallowed all of my stuff and there's lots of room left over), I'm finding myself moving around a lot more to reach things that I need. A small price to pay. :D

I have a huge surface now for sorting stamps, and also to lay out my drying books. The room is much more open because the return separating my office from the TV/rec area is lower in height. The colour scheme is also a huge improvement.

The other big bonus is that I'm no longer facing into the corner with my back to the rest of the room when I'm sitting at my computer. :D

Here are some BEFORE and AFTER pictures, and then some overview pics. All in all a big success! :D
The 2 big red bins on the left part of the new bookcase hide all my bags of kiloware, which were previously sitting in bags and boxes on the floor.
Image Image

Image Image

Image Image

Image

Image
No more clutter on the floor. Our old area carpet didn't fit the new space, but I don't mind the floor. If the floor gets cold in the winter, we'll have to look for a new rug.:D

Those of you who are sharp-eyed will see that we retained one piece of furniture - a small grey steel filing cabinet on wheels from IKEA that fits nicely under the desk and houses boxes of glassines with my swap stock - the colour even works perfectly. I've also upgraded the computer, and switched to an ultra-wide screen monitor that is not glossy (the last one was a touch screen all-in-one that reflected the lamp light and was hard on the eyes due to glare).

I'm very very happy with my new set-up. In the next few days I'll get back on track with posting some thanks for items received recently, then will hold a celebratory giveaway to inaugurate the new Stamp Den!! :D :D

Very happy the cover arrived in a good state, Jean! And even more happy that you and Naomi got so happy about it! :)
It sure was the trip of my life. Seven days safari was more amazing than I even could have hoped and we saw so many animals and experienced so much fun!

I'm happy I've managed to sort out the 2500 photos into around a tenth of that for the travel reports that I made on FB. My plan was to cut them down to around 100 and re-use the texts for a photobook, but so far I haven't been able to copy-paste and I'm not too thrilled about re-writing 40-50 000 letters... But the trip is definitely worth a photo book, so it will be one in the end. :) Trying to learn the IMovie program on the Mac too, so I can make a safari movie from all the movie clips I made too. With patience...

:)

Congratulations on your newly made stamp den! It looks absolutely fantastic! So much space and such good order now!

I tried to match the cover and the stamp, too - the pre-stamped cover commemorates the traditional Belarusian Harvest Fest called Dazhynky, and the stamp shows the fruit of a harvest - dividing just baked bread from the new harvest

I've been doing some tidying up/organizing/purging in my new office space, and I found a pile of empty booklets - I've been throwing these into a box whenever I use up the stamps. It's interesting to see the variety of stamps I've been using to send out my philatelic mail over the last few years. I'm not sure of the time period this accumulation represents, but it must be at least 3-4 years (and probably not everything is here).

Mail has been coming in fits and spurts over the last couple of weeks due to the rotating Canada Post strikes, but a whole stack of stuff arrived today. Among them was this wonderfully yummy cover sent by pmc, franked with asparagus, squash, and watermelon:

Image

Inside was a mint booklet of Japan's 4th issue in their Traditional Dietary Culture of Japan Series.

The booklet cover is designed to appear as a box...

Image

...which when opened reveals the treats inside:

Image

Wagashi are traditional Japanese confections that are often served with tea, especially the types made of mochi, anko (azuki bean paste), and fruits. They are made in a wide variety of shapes and consistencies and with diverse ingredients and preparation methods. Some are popular across the country and around the year while others are only available regionally or seasonally.

Sweet azuki bean paste (anko) is a central ingredient in a large number of Japanese sweets. Boiled azuki beans are sweetened with sugar and mashed to create either smooth anko (koshian) or chunky anko (tsubuan). Other common ingredients for wagashi include rice cakes (mochi), rice flour, Japanese agar (kanten), sesame paste and chestnuts.

Thanks Peter for this delectable addition to my gastronomy collection!! :D :D :D

After a busy week I have finally had time to examine a cover (and contents) I received from Jean in detail and it is stunning! Many thanks Jean for taking the trouble to prepare such a great military cover for me. It even has an 11.11.18 cancel :D

The swap items inside were also great!

Glad that it reached safely George. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get the 100th anniversary cancel. My regular post office was closed as it was a Sunday, but the postal outlet at a local pharmacy was open that day. :D

I've got a huge pile on my desk and a ton of things I need to send out. I started to make a dent in it tonight. Here are a few things that have arrived recently.

Clapas sent this lovely cover with swap items inside:

This souvenir sheet from TAAF is very cool - if you scan it with an App called Courrier Plus, it will play 3 videos on your phone: the sound of the winds of the Kerguelen islands in the Antarctic, the sounds of the royal penguin colony of Cape Ratmanoff, and a teaser of Symphonie Australe composed by Julien Gauthier and played by l'Orchestre symphonique de Bretagne.

Image

A superb addition to my music collection!

Also several mint art stamps for my art collection:

Many thanks Thierry for the swap! :D :D :D
