For Curacao squared circle postmarks, the two references I use are:

A Postal History of Curacao, by Frank W. Julsen and A. M. Benders (1976)

and

Curacao: An Identification Guide for Cancels, by Richard A. Phelps (2009)

Both of these have a chapter on the squared circle postmarks.

There are four hammers known for Paramaribo, all quite distinctive. (Fortunately, not like Curacao, where there are over 10, and all similar.)

I have reasonable strikes for all four, and will post them here in the near future. There are three hammers known for Nickerie, two from Coronie but only one for all the remaining ones.

I do like that postcard with St. Eustatius and Saba.

If a postcard with Aruba shows up in Vancouver, who gets it will depend on which one of us sees it first. :D

Well it's not Noel and Maitland Nova Scotia on the same cover, but it's nice to have both, when I've seen them separately only a couple of times.

You might want to add this to the bibliography - The Jim A. Hennok Collection of Squared Circle Postmarks of Canada (and grab it off the website). And for my last comment, you can find out here why a Noel/Maitland cover (and there is one pictured in Moffett and Hansen) would be fabulous to have.

Tonight's game is identify that partial. From Transvaal, the last 5 letters I believe are SRUST. Looks like an 1895 cancel, the high value a telegram or parcel usage?

I was going to add that this book is also available directly from the author, but then looking at the ebay listing, it appears to be the author himself listing the book.

Here's a recent pickup. Similar to the private Italian hotel strikes, but this is the solitary dated postmark on what appears to be a legitimate piece of mail. Opinions welcome.

As I promised, here are the four hammers for Paramaribo:

Types A and B:

Image Image
and types C and D:

ImageImage

I distinguish them as follows:

If the date is from 1902 to around March 1904, then it can only be types A or B.

In type A, the first "R" looks like "P.", and the "O" is square.

In type C, the letters are extremely widely spaced.

Types B and D are harder to distinguish, but the letters in D are slightly taller and thinner, and the first four letters ("PARA") are less widely spaced. Note the position of the first "A" relative to the arcs. In addition, the tops of the "A"'s are flat in type B, but pointed in type D. Also the "O" in type B was damaged on the right side in the middle of 1902.

There are other differences which you can use to confirm the type.

Finally, if you find one dated in the 1890's, you have a Fournier forgery.

Thanks Frank_King. I'll check to see if I have all 4. I presume there isn't a difficult one in the 4. How do you distinguish the Nickerie's? There's a small chance I have all 3, but I notice that town used bluish-gray ink a bit.

None of the Paramaribo hammers is especially rare.
moloch wrote: Image
The above Nickerie cancel is type A. Type B has a "K" with a different shape. (The lower right foot meets the upper right arm near the middle.) I don't have a copy of type C, but it looks like type B, but with a wider "R".

I do have a type B example, which I will scan in the next couple of days, but I don't have a type C example.

According to Erfmann and Stuut:

Type A was in use from January 1904 to December 1906

Type B was in use from 22 December 1906 to February 1910 (with the second "I" missing from Sept. 1907.)

Type C was in use from January to June 1909.

Picked up a fair number of Madrid covers recently. Usage spans at least from Feb 1892 - Oct 1909. The latest I have striking a stamp is May 1894; after that receiver marks. The photo is 3 backstamps from covers from Jan 10-Feb 22 1899 (they all are dated letters). It looks like 3 concurrent hammers - the bottom 1's are the best way to separate them. These 3 types, and maybe more, show up throughout the 1900s.

Micky,

I always have the same problem,

I think the Cape Town and Mussooree will not have any great interest as they are quite common, the other who knows, but unfortunately it is only a small part of the postmark so I don't think it will be that attractive to buyers.....

Sorry

Lundy so in the Cape Province list that we made together I will add this one with a question mark?Micky I agree with Lundy assesment. Two are quite common, the other one is not complete otherwise would have been interesting.I don't think you can ask much for it.However if you still intend to sell it let me know and I can check at my club when it reopens in September. Ahoj everyone!

I came across these three partial strikes of squared circle cancellations from the Netherlands Indies.

Image

Is there enough there for them to be identified?

It is interesting that two of them show an A without a crossbar, although from different places.

Cheers,

The first one is PATI. The other two are probably SOERABAJA and TJILATJAP.

I don't see anything in my catalogue about the "A" missing the cross bar.
