very nice Cadenabbia postmarks,I hope one day to find a similar one.Just to clarify the previous comments this is what the last edition of Gaggero (2002) says about "annulli muti" or mute postmarks.
"the mute postmarks were introduced in August 1893,the first and better known ones are of the "thimble" type, which were used to replace temporarily the postmark of an office when there was a need of a repair or a change of the postmark. We are also aware of a rare use of a mute postmark in Foggia" However the Gaggero does not give a value for the Foggia mute postmark or for any other mute postmark. The new edition of the Gaggero is under preparation and there will be many additions maybe also the mute postmarks will be added there

Just in case I would like to underline that I am interested in acquiring new squared circle postmarks all the time. Some of the ones I have seen like the Torpediniera one of a few weeks ago or the Cadenabbia one I would definitely buy.

To start you can contact me and I can tell what they are and their catalogue value if they are not in the gaggero catalogue I can verify with editor of the catalogue their level of rarity.you can publish their pictures here and we will start from that

just to clarify better my reply,Moloch,I know that you have a copy of the Gaggero catalogue but that is around 10 years old.I am in regular contact with Provenzano, the editor of the Gaggero and the one who is working on a new edition.I receive from him from time to time some information on some postmarks that he has identified and will appear in the new edition so I maybe just a little bit ahead of the existing catalogue. And whenever I do not have the information I will contact him to get a clarification. It is easier for me to communicate as I speak Italian.Matt

That sounds good. I'll scan the cancels in a few weeks and email pics to you so you can provide the information to Provenzano.

Been scanning the unlisted Italian I have today to send to Matt. Came across the opposite of the nude strike (dated but no town). Here's one with no date, but clear town.

interesting I will verify with Provenzano what he thinks of this one, probably the error of a postal employee in reshifting the date in the new year? Matt

a question for Moloch and Sark. I have contacted the editor of the Gaggero catalogue about the "muti" cancels and he is not aware of a Cadenabbia one.He has some doubts about it as he has found already 4 or 5 forgeries of "muti" from other locations like Asso,Mozzate and Ternate.I will send him pictures of your postcards, but could you also tell me where you procured them and approximately how much you paid?that could help to ascertain if they are genuine or not.Considering that the other forgeries were offered at prices in excess of 100 euros,if yours have been purchased at lower prices, that itself could be a sign that these cards are genuine.thank you Matt

thank you for the Jamner postmark. In the listing that I have it was shown as a less common one with only date known of 4 november 1904, yours is two years earlier. However my list is quite old and it is possible that this postmark is more common than originally reported.

Lundy ,yes the first one is Amboina.I cannot read the year so I cannot tell which type as there are 3 types for Amboina, one with big letters from 1893 to 1903, a similar one with date numbers a bit bigger from 1903 to 1910 and a third one with smaller letters from 1904 to 1907. All are more or less common.
The second one is Capri, there are 4 different types but are all quite common.

The price paid for these was not that of a forger. I saw about half a dozen examples which all came from the same correspondence and we're originally sold by a British postcard dealer who had bought the album they were in for the views rather than the postmarks.

Whilst the forgery of postmarks maybe commonplace in Italy thankfully it is not (yet!) widespread here as far as I know. I have no doubt that these are genuine, unless some cleaver forger inserted them into a genuine old PC collection in the UK in the hope that eventually they would come to the wider philatelic market and then he could start marketing his extensive further dodgy supply!

As for price paid I don't remember exactly but it would have been in the region of less than 10 euro's each.

Hope this helps.

Sark

Moloch, that site is excellent, I've started submitting some of my finds to him.
Here's a new one...the only previously recorded squared circle for Orange Free State was from the capital Bloemfontein.
This stamp is a bit of a mess but looks like it might possibly be a new find, for Heilbron in the OFS.

Here's an attractive one - Burghersdorp in the Cape on a pair of Orange Free State. It has no year in the cancel, but it can only be 1900 as the Boer occupation of that little bit of the Cape at the start of the Boer war only lasted less than a year.

Recent pickup. Love covers with outgoing and incoming squared circles from different countries. First cover I have with these 2 dutch colonies in combo - Dutch Indies (Buitenzorg) and Surinam (Paramaribo). Took almost 2 months to get there via London. A little battered but a nice addition.
