Today was the Ted Kerzner auction of Canadian squared cancels. I was online for most of the auction, and if you are a Canadian squared circle collector, this was a rare opportunity to fill holes in the collection with seldom, if ever, seen material.

I managed to win a lot from every major subcategory except western provinces (it and Quebec I thought had the most vigorous bidding). I believe the Montreal Type 1 squared circle on cover (a recent discovery, and a singleton) was the highest price at C$4600, but there were quite a number of $1000 items.

Anyways, I'm curious to know how it compares price wise to auctions of other countries.

This one was not part of the Kerzner auction, thought he might have owned it (there were very few 2 country covers including Canada in his collection and they seemed to be all GB/Canada). It's the only 3 country squared circle cover I've seen. And 3 distinctive hammer types of Canada, GB, and Italy.

Hi..

I found this Pangkalan Brandan (Langkat Regency, North Sumatra) squared-circle cancel dated 18/9/1895 with purple ink.

Image

Is purple squared-circle cancel commonly found?

Another picture with "normal" ink for comparison:

Hope the image is clear enough to examine :D

Thanks

This thread has been a sleep, some of the users have left us I think, italianstamps is one.

I have this one coming from Delcampe, Square circle postmarks from Meester Cornelis & Weltevreden heading off to Brussels. The Weltevreden square is filled in, not sure if this is normal. Will scan the back when I receive the item.

Today was the Sparks Auction of GB squared circle postmarks. A lot of rarities, which went for surprisingly reasonable prices (at least compared to what similarly rare Canadian material would fetch), and a lot of larger lots with good destinations and scarce postmarks that went well above estimates. I managed to pick up the one lot I was most interested in at half the estimate.

For the low prices on the individual lots, maybe this was due to GB specialist material in a Canadian auction house. It might also reflect diminished interest. I wonder what the effects of sequestering the good material has on the general interest of a collecting area over time.

Was Nelli on the list of Indian squared Circle postmarks, because I didn't see it. Here's the one I found:

Nelli is not on any list I have. Note - if the list you are using is the same as mine, it's 10+ years old. But still, nice find - there's probably not many in any case and might be unique.

Can anyone identify this Squared Circle? Someone has pencilled South Africa on the reverse and certainly this could be true as this stamp was frequently used during the Boer War period.

Could it be NAPOLI SUCCURSALE - a Naples paquebot use perhaps?

It doesn't look South African.

Hello,

The cancel should be Napoli Succ.le N.11, in use since 1890, very common. In no way it is a paquebot, there are no squared circle paquebots in Italy. Probably it was applied on arrival, on a letter that wasn't canceled on departure.

Can anyone provide information on this squared circle postmark please?

Edit: A little more research - looks like it is Cradley Heath, England. Has anyone seen this on a Queensland stamp before?

I went to our local Vanpex show this weekend in Vancouver and saw an interesting exhibit by I think our Frank King on this board. He has discovered a previously unrecorded 5th Paramaribo Suriname squared circle, one similar to his 4th shown in this thread with some different details. Hopefully, he still reads this board to give us some more details (it's usage seemed peculiar).

Hi Moloch,

Indeed, that was my exhibit at Vanpex.

As a recap, the four hammers shown previously. First the A and B hammers introduced in 1902. The inner circle is 13mm.

ImageImage

Then the type C and D hammers introduced in 1904. The inner circle is 12 mm.

Image Image

Finally the type E hammer. The inner circle is 12.5 mm.

Image

There are a number of differences between the D and E hammers besides the size of the inner circle.
- There is damage to the left side of the letters R, A, M which does not occur on the D hammer. This damage occured September 1908.
- The left side of the O projected just touches the outer arcs on the E hammer, but misses on the D hammer.
- The M is more symmetric on the E hammer.
- The inner circle is short above the year at left on the E hammer.

Here is another image of the E hammer:

Ahoj moloch!

A nice much-travelled cover.

The 'someone' seems to have been a crew member (Matrose = Seaman)

The vessel 'Rosefield' seems to have been a sailing-ship (barque), sailing under the Norwegian Flag (Norske Bark).

'Parti' on the reverse indicates the ship had already left.

There also seems to be a Port of Spain (Trinidad) postmark in the mix

Cheers,

Honza

The squared circle cancel is absolutely *real* Danby type B cancel of Tejpur HPO (est. 1835), Tejpur (26.6528°N 92.7926°E), now in Shonitpur district of Asom state.

Tejpur HPO functioned under Asom Division (HQ Guwahati) of B Circle from 1869 to 1873 when it was transferred to Upper Asom Division (HQ Shibsagar) under newly created Asom Circle (HQ Guwahati) (created on Apr 1,1873).

It was transferred to the direct administrative control of Chief Inspector of Post Offices, Asom (HQ Guwahati) in 1874 and again in 1875 to Chief Inspector of Post Offices, Asom (HQ Shillong).

Mail from Tejpur (located on the northern bank of R. Brahmaputra) to foreign destinations was first sent to Kolkata and this cover must have been sent via Asom Steamer Service (HQ Dhuburi) (created Mar 20,1884) which was operational between Dibrugarh and Jatarpur thru Brahmaputra, Padma and Bhairab rivers.

It may be mentioned that during WW2, US APOs 217 and 429 were located in Tejpur.

Postal Rate: The basic seamail rate from India to Guernsey (via England) was 4A6P for weight upto 14.18gm (½oz) from Feb 1,1880 to Dec 31,1890.

The Br. India 1886 4A6P SG 97 was almost exclusively used on covers to GB. Guernsey is no doubt an uncommon destination.

I have a list that has a Tezpur cancel - type Bt, which is the correct type for this strike (t indicates it has a time mark, type B is the smaller 3 bar hammer, the month/day lettering in type C is large so this a B type). My list is out of date, but the period of usage is given as 17/11/1889-17/01/1890. This strike would precede that, and this one is a nice clear strike supporting an early usage.

The new online (in pdf) update (vol. 6) on Canadian squared circles can be found at the BNAPS site (usage comes with with the usual usage and copyright restrictions) - http://www.bnaps.org/ore/SCSG-SquaredCirclePostmarks/SCSG-SquaredCirclePostmarks.htm

This update contains many excellent photos of the various hammers and a census of the difficult to find hammers, though if you want to be serious about the subject, you'll probably need a vol. 4 and 5, because the authors limited the scope of the update.
